Been playing this for years. Glad you gave it some time on your channel! Drawing the maps and writing out a quick journal of the adventure is always the most fun for me. It's just relaxing.
Late reply but any tips about how you go about writing your journal? I just started recently but looking for ideas to expand the rp elements and making it all more visually personal.
@@Naruga they have some great sheets you can print off under the download section. If you don't like any of those you can literally use a standard notebook and record your events by turn like I do. It's a great exercise in creative writing. It also helps immerse you in the game and make it more fun.
4AD has such a great community as well. The facebook group for it is super helpful to newer players and the author of the series is consistently posting new content. You're right Liz, it does take a little more work to get initially into the system but once you dive into the series it outpaces most $100+ dungeon crawl board games.
I totally agree with your opinion. You get out of it what you put into it. I believe all types of games have their place. For me, 4AD is excellent for a quick dungeon crawl experience with the option to go as far as you'd like. I'm currently setting myself up for a multi book campaign to play. Great review.
Great overview! I have the original book as well as the Titans and Grail adventures. For an old school crawl there’s nothing better! I actually use miniatures and even props around my graph paper to give the play some ambience. I add in RPG soundtrack music and it’s a fairly immersive experience! 😝
@@huckcarignan820 The Author of this game said it was his homage to his time with original D&D and wanted to capture part of that feel including the Race as Class. He just wanted to create something that would be easy to play Solo.
I just bought the book so I can have some solo adventures when the family is too busy. I appreciate your informative video and the link providing printable pages. I’m looking forward to beginning my adventures.
I went ahead and ordered it from amazon. The reviews there mentioned that it plays itself but it seems the secondary publications seem to inject story and interest into it.
Hey Liz, thanks! Which book would you recommend to buy after the base book that best highlights the improved story elements (would you suggest Abyss)? Also have you tried D100 Dungeon?
Fun game but some things don't feel right. You shouldn't be penalized for using a light handed weapon if your trained to use them. I had to eliminate that then gave one handed weapons a +1 bonus, two handed a +2 and increased monsters defense. Allowed xp for vermin and its silly to have to roll to increase your level. If you earn or learn something that advances your level you shouldn't unlearn it based on a bad dice roll. I also use bigger sheets of graph paper instead of the 20x20 they recommend. If not then you will find yourself modifying rooms or drawing one square dead ends. Theres a lot you need to alter to make the game more balanced.
Just got into 4ad with twisted supplements and some other stuff. Haven't tried past base game but it was fun, what do you like about d100 more? I'm thinking about getting it but 4ads edge seems to be the fact you're managing a full party instead of a single character. I can still buy and enjoy both (after ker nethalas cause it's also super fun)
I'm wondering about this game. I loved D100 until I found out how unbalanced the non warrior classes were. Then, I lost all interest. I'm hoping this is better.
The game is mostly going from room to room doing combat where the warrior has an advantage. You get lower stats on the other classes for fighting. The spell and scrolls used by mages are very limited on how you can use them and do not replenish easily. The thief has a dex bonus to compensate but you may use that once in an entire game and doesn't really get you that much. I did well as a warrior but when trying to level up a mage, I just kept getting killed even by low level monsters. My spells/scrolls weren't that powerful or would run out and I just ended up fighting with weak weapons which is not what a mage should doing.
I see it’s a bit like the OSR games with race=class and so on. Is Gold=XP and is it rather deadly too? Thanks for the review, will probably have to check this out.

Excellent and enjoyable review.
Looks interesting. I like the old school way of having elf dwarf and halfling as classes like in Basic D&D. Very nostalgic.
Yea, in the old (1979/1980) Basic D&D, the Elf, Halfling, and Dwarf were classes.

Just ordered this. I liked that fact as well. I used always be a halfling, so that’s definitely going to be in my party

Nice Review and great call outs at the end. I felt your pros and cons were fair and accurate. Nice job Liz!
I recently picked this up can't wait to play it
Great review!! I just bought the book and this was a nice breakdown of what its all about. Thank you.
Great review. Gonna pick this up!

Great review! What are some other games that have a pre-imagined storyline?
Check out Micro Chapbook RPG
Check out Marching Order by Crumbling Keep
Great detailed breakdown of the whole game system. Love solo RPG offerings like this one.

If I fail to lvl up, I make them get another chance after next combat encounter
Hi, didn't tried 4AD yet. I heard about it recently but tried D100 dungeon first and really enjoyed. Have you played this one? I think you'll love it
D100 is by far a better game. I got 4AD years ago, owned about 15 of the supplemental books and its just a one trick pony for the most part.

Lawrence L7337 what makes it unbalanced?

Gold is not XP. They are not linked like old D&D.
O_o there are HORROR versions of this game?
Yeah!
Survive the Night is also a great one shot D6 Horror RPG system.
It's called "Alone Against Darkness". You can get it from RPGDrivethru or LuLu.
There is also a stand alone called "Four Against the Great Old Ones" for those who like the mythos feel in their scary stories.
The german version is hardcover 👍
4AD is really good but for me, I love D100 DUNGEON MAPPING game. Hope y'all may get to review and playthrough D100 DUNGEON by Martin Knight.
Still didn't understand how to play it 🤷
