I've been playing 4AD too in between my BECMI and BFRPG sessions. I am pretty impressed overall and these cards would really speed things up. I like your vids, GG. I was kind of hitting a lull in my solo play until I found your channel a few months ago and to know that there is some one out there unabashedly doing the same thing made me want to continue. Some times it is hard to be a solo player...

So glad you are finding something positive in my channel. I get where you are coming from too! Sometimes I wish I could sit around with a group and not be a solo player!

I like the idea of turning a thick forest into a dungeon by using "paths" and "clearings." Very clever.

Agreed. Very clever and it really works.

I had the same thoughts of not running more than one character in a group. I tried four against darkness when I decided too get it, but something felt off with either me or the game. I do like these cards since they replace the randomization a bit from how the game explains it. Though I think it mostly is different with 4AD since I have mostly used BFRPG to play small adventures and now I plan on trying Swords & Six-Siders that kinda gives a simple experience. Perhaps I could think of 4AD again with these cards or see overviews in later videos.

Can’t remember if I did a vid on Swords and Sixsiders but I do have, play, and like it!

Nice! 4AD is in the air. :) These cards are great.

Indeed! I got to these because of Aleksey and not 4AD but they and your series caused me to take that game out again... I do love the cards and your series is making me realize I should purchase some more from this game!

@@GeekGamers01 I didn’t like the game at first either. But introducing more options makes the game much better IMO. Mixing and matching different supplements adds a lot of variety without adding a lot of complexity. You can keep it as simple as you want.

Not a mathemathician, but if I tried calculating the possibility space based on how the cards chain together, if I understood it correctly.
And stopped halfway, lol. But I'm also intrigued about how one would calculate it
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but
    I think the first encounter you draw would be from a pool of 12 * 2 * 11 * 5 * 10 = 13200 possibilities

Thx for trying. I have no idea! But sounds good!

I'm having a go in the calculation how many possible outcomes you get when generating a room.
I will have to make some assumptions, as I don't have the deck. Each time if I make an assumption, I mention it.
I make the assumption that you generate your room with the full deck. So you have 12 cards to start from.
You pull 1 out. Giving you a room-layout and a room-type. Making the assumption that each card is unique (so no 2 cards having the same layout and type), there are 12 possibilities how your room layout and type comes out.
Now we pull out the next card, which tells us how to fill our room. Here you get an answer of 3 possibilities: special, trap or combat. This gives you, up to this point, 12 layouts with each 3 possible types of encounters. Giving you 36 (=12 x 3) options until now.
You now pick one more card, which tells you what's inside the room. Again, I have to make some assumptions. Firstly, I assume that each card has a different special, a different trap and a different combat than the other cards. However, because you draw your cards in succession, you don't have all the 12 options available. The first card you drew can't be drawn, leaving 11 possibilities. The second card you have drawn isn't removed from the pool of possibilities, because it tells us what type of encounter we have and the cards are not unique in this way. (so it doesn't remove possibilities).
At this point we have 396 (=36*11) possibilities.
However at this point, the calculations become very complex. Because IF you have a combat, you still need to roll (draw cards) for how many monsters you face. But making the assumption that different monsters have different ways on how to decide their quantity, it's at this point impossible for me to carry on with the calculation. And then you have possible monster reactions which are also different number of possibilities for each monster, so... I can't continue this calculation without having the actual deck.
I agree with the 12*2*11 part... I'm doubtfull of the 5*10 part. I think it's more complicated than that for an exact calculation.
I think we can try to estimate using your formula. Estimating 5 possible reactions for the monsters and 10 different possibilities for their quantity is a great idea. However, you are forgetting that not every room generates a combat. Only in case of a combat encounter, this two extra cards need to be drawn. So we update our formula, the first term are the possibilities that give a special room or trap. The second term is in case of combat with two additional things to be generated:
      estimate of possibilities = (12*2*2 * 11) + (12 * 2 * 1 * 11 * 5 * 10) = 528 + 13200 = 13728
However I think there are monster with less reactions, and less numbers. So this is probably to high.
I need to go now, but this was fun! :)

I'm admittedly looking at getting into 4AD at the moment but I'm wondering if it has the flexibility I'm after. I enjoy a good dungeon crawl but I'm also interested in a game that has the opportunity for more sort of open world play (can't think how else to phrase it).

    • @GeekGamers01

There is so much 4 AD material out there-including the recently released massive volumes on town that have nothing to do with dungeon crawling-I’d recommend you look around the internet to see what available. I have over 17 books on this system, all of which can be mixed and matched to create as open a world as you can imagine. Some complain there is too much open-ended content.

What is d100 dungeon? Is it a book containing the system itself or is that a category you are speaking of here?

It is a game. I have 8 vids on it and here is the shortest intro one-d100 dungeon in d10 minutes. See my d100 playlist for the rest. ua-cam.com/video/B4wxSzGLVvg/v-deo.html

Agree , I like the cards. I picked them up about a month ago for a trip. This is a fun lighter game that you can pick up and play. The options with all expansions(books) that you can create is what I enjoy. If looking for a more in-depth game I prefer Martin's D100. Keep up the great work.

Thanks and glad you enjoyed. Yes I do love d100 as it does so much 4AD doesn’t/can’t-but they are both great to play and have for different experiences.
