      Technically you can say that all funded HasLabs would have been successful at retail. This is the point of HasLab; if Hasbro is not sure that enough people will want a product at full price they make it a HasLab so that it is all or nothing. If a product is not going to be profitable for them then they aren't going to bother making it.

      That’s the whole point though. HASLAB was created to avoid the bargain shoppers. Hasbro knows people will wait for retail to put it on sale, and Wal-Mart won’t carry them anymore. Therefore Hasbro is happy with this made to order model, and the fans are sort of happy.

    If they want to fund the expensive ships and play sets. Set up payment plans. It takes a year plus to get anyways. If they do that they might sell more because it doesn’t sound as expensive then. Looks less pricey than one big lump sum.

    I went in on the Haslab Unicron because I knew something like that in that scale would not fly at retail. Also because of the niche aspect of it.
    But I can see the Skystriker being a straw on the camel’s back. What was it for backing, $230? Even with inflation, I’d have to check, but seems really high for what basically is a replica of the original toy from the 80s.
    I backed the Cats lair and it will probably be my last backing project. Having seen it in person now and just the sheer ridiculousness of it is a novelty. Plus Thundercats is a semi dormant IP. Aside from Super7’s efforts. It’s not something you’re going to see on retail store shelves.
    But, I don’t see it making it to its full unlocked tiers. I thought it would’ve budged some more after Power Con. But it’s still sitting over 3200 and some change. It still has less than a month to the deadline. I just think price and space is a major factor with this one.
    Hasbro in hindsight with its other crowdfunding campaigns got a good dose of hubris thinking their customers would eat up whatever they slopped out. Some of those projects were not the best subjects to pick. Johnny Blaze Ghostrider with the motorcycle would’ve sold over the car. Reva’s light saber with a character that is not liked obviously didn’t sell. She’s a villain not a hero. They’re not thinking about who their audience really is and what they’ll spend their money on.

  • @BikoX
    @BikoX 10 місяців тому +2

    What "they" (toy companies) haven't considered is that most crowd funds are being bought/considered by the same audience. At this point, after many years of multiple crowd funds, more so than the money is the limited space issue. All toy collectors are running out of display space and due to that fact are becoming more selective in what they buy.

      @joshogborn5963 10 місяців тому +2

      Yes, value is relative for sure. We each see that differently. There's probably more demand for an Ewok set, honestly, now that you mention it. The playability factor is a big one. Only so much you can do with a gargantuan ship, kids probably couldn't even move it around and at 500 are mostly priced out. Part of the reason I mentioned what I did about it would be to increase the playability of the ship.

    Haslabs has made poor quality products in their expensive crowdfunding business and that is a disappointment for a billion-dollar company. I won't mind paying a lot if the end result is worth it. Take the '89 Batwing and Batmobile made by JazzInc Dioramas for example. Both were priced over a thousand bucks each but these got crowdfunded in less than a week, I could have done the pre-orders had I known about the company prior June 2023. "Dream project" is one of the stupidest terms and ideas toy collectors have ever latched onto. Who gets to decide what is a dream project to begin with? You? Me? Some other random stranger on the internet? I'd argue that HasLabs or any other crowdfunding campaign should be used for any product that doesn't garner big box retail support. A perfect example would be a campaign for the full 1990-1994 Guardians of the Galaxy team with space Ghost Rider. HasLab is a tool that should be used to maximize the amount of product brought to market.

    Passed on Unicron. It's too big and the head didn't look right and the planet kibble made it look poorly designed. Went with the 3rd party version instead. I'm not into Star Wars toys anymore. I'd have to see some kickass vehicles from the original trilogy to get me fund anything Star Wars. i felt Star Saber could have been better but backed it. I hope Deathsaurus turns out better. And I backed the HISs tank and Dragonfly. Looking forward to more Joe and Cobra projects if they make the ones I really want. They need to stop adding tiers that slow down the crowdfunding. Pretty sure rhe Dragonfly would have unlocked all tiers sooner if Glenda wasn't offered.

    Hey Mike, interesting topic. Might I ask in your opinion what would be a dream project. Personally I would love a Technodrome from Super7 a new Castle Grayskull from Mattel for Masterverse, hopefully it would be slightly bigger than the classics and simple because I missed out on the classics. Crowd funds seem to be a delicate topic, if you support a project because you see the value others will bash you or blame the consumer for the increase in prices. Myself when I love an IP I want to support it to help it be successful in turn i get more characters or maybe playsets and vehicle's. One thing that we need to understand is that it's a business, company's are not out to make friends they are in it to sell a product and you choose to support it or not. I believe we as adults can discern if it has value for you or not. A great example is the Neca sewer set, I love neca and I support there tmnt line but I'm going to pass on the set because I'm able to realize that it's way over priced it. I believe it should have been 125 to 150. I will still support there line going forward and I wouldn't bash the collectors who want it because value is in the eye of the beholder.

      There are so many possibilities like the Tantive 4 blockade runner or Jawa Sandcrawler. Yes collectors are very opinionated and share those opinions without concern for others. That said I buy things that most others would not and I understand when other collectors spend crazy money on something I would not drop $100 on

    Unicron was too much for too little. It REALLY put me off as I have bought most of the current CHUG TFs, including titan class. It seems Hasbro learnt their lesson by not alienating most of their fans by the smaller/cheaper Starsaber and Dezasaurus (both of which I bought).
    Mind you, Takara are also pricing themselves out of relevancy via their overpriced MP figures and their Takara Tomy Mall exclusive Titan class figures (such as Omega Sentinel going for around 300 dollars). Even 3P MP figures seem to be cheaper and better quality.

    I am all for them seeing if something will sell before they make it. I'm NOT for them arbitrarily pricing these things when they own the license, so they are just paying for design and materials. These should be priced for retail. I'm talking directly to GI Joe Classified. The crowd funding is just to make sure if they make it , there is an audience to buy it. Make that HISS tank make sense to me. Subtract 100 for the figures, so that tank is worth $200? I guess its worth what you're willing to pay for it.
    Collectors need to start boycotting resellers with these huge mark ups. Companies need to re-issue figures after a year etc. Mindbender, Zartan, Major bludd, Serpentor ( sell it without the chariot or paint the chariot a stupid color since the other one was supposed to be an exclusive). I made a list of all the classified figures I am going to buy if they release them and at current pricing that came up to $1000 dollars. I'm sure other collections are going to buy them as well.
    Stan lee said, when we sell Spiderman #1 we get the cover price, that's it. So lets sell more issues. it ruined the investment banker market for comics, but everyone was able to get an issue of their favorite comic when it came out. Hasbro needs to drip a few old figures out every now and then. Not just as Tigerforce or python patrol. Lets be honest, that series Killed GI Joe Animated for the current audience at the time.

    Ghost should have been just $400 with just Hera. The price is just too high for something so niche and so HUGE and the price being so high is only going to make it even higher later. The price is at a point that completely locks out a huge amount of Rebal and SW collectors, it's way too much. If Ghost is your dream item you should really get it now, but not because of the figures, but because it most likely will never be made again in your lifetime. So you can make your budget work, or you have to make the hard choices between the dozens of crowdfunds going on at any one time. Too much $$$ Too niche.

      @@tydiriumhanger1320 I don't mean that in a rude way. I mean it in a way of the collectors are making it to where it has to be exclusive because they're putting money into it so normal people that are not die hard collectors miss out. At the end of the day and as a child of the 80's I never had to support a toy company to make toys. I have some figures hanging up on my wall but I'm not going to the extreme and support a toy company who by all means and purposes can't get the project done without the collectors help. And yes I understand people will put their money and resources and time together to make something happen and I'm for that. But exclusives and collector items for toys come on ppl🤷🏿‍♂️. The Ghost was such a mistake - there is SO much more money to be had in older Star Wars fans, but we're getting so disenfranchised that we won't want to invest in the brand anymore if they keep this crap up. Should have been a Death Star, Ewok Village or Imperial Shuttle to actually celebrate and honor ROTJ40, but no - they throw it all at a subpar piece of entertainment that most casual fans haven't even seen. The show is going to tank IMO as well as the Filoni movie.

      This type of stuff used to be big store exclusives but customers would wait to pick it up until the retailers were forced to put it on clearance. When a retailer puts an item on clearance that means they are just trying to get it off shelves even if it is losing them money. With Toys R Us now closed, the other major retailers don't think it is worth the risk so they won't order this from Hasbro. I can understand people wanting to get stuff on sale but if a type of product goes on sale too much both the manufacturers and the retailers aren't going to make/sell it anymore.
