    I collect Black Series and have a particular love for Jabba the Hutt and the various creatures and characters that live in his palace. If the Rancor was available at retail for a more reasonable price, I would have been all for it. I hope HASLAB learns from this.

    When Mattel can sell a MASSIVE three-foot+ long Jurassic World T-rex for less than $180 AND it has a sound chip, you KNOW that Hasbro can make this less than $200. AND sell it at retail (if they actually bothered trying to talk to retail about it). Hasbro is risk averse and putting something in retail means that they may have to eat unsold merchandise. They have no confidence in the Star Wars IP at retail if it isn't Baby Yoda.

      I picked up several of these large dinos for $34 each. I'd have little fear of a child breaking it. But the rancor would probably have to be off limits to the kid or at least supervised. And that's just sad. Sad that the rancor being 10x the price and irreplaceable unless spending 20x the price would disappoint the kid.

    The Rancor's failure is a symptom of Hasbro's entire approach to the Star Wars license in recent years. Vintage Collection, Retro Collection, Black Series, Galaxy of Adventures, Mission Fleet...they're producing too many unrelated lines in too many different scales and they're all being half-assed. Kenner wrote the book in the 70's and 80's, and Hasbro did a nice job with the 90's revival. Hasbro knows what fans want because they have decades of success to refer to, plus there is more than enough feedback on the internet. They need to get their collective heads out of their asses and start delivering products people want to buy. If you can't get money from STAR WARS fans you have failed miserably and completely.
    Not only did they launch 3 Haslab's right before Christmas, they also didn't take into account their competition. Super 7 is not going to stop soliciting expensive toys any time soon, never mind NECA, Mezco, etc. Hasbro needs to stop resting on their laurels and understand that there is a LOT of competition for the dollar of the adult collectors these days. If they want to present high end products, they need to bring their "A" game right out of the gate.

    Hasbro already did this years ago with their Toys R US/ SDCC Exclusive in 2015. It came with a rancor, guard, Luke, Jabba, C3po, and Leia figures. I get that it would be more expensive due to scaling up to 6' inch scale but the SDCC figure set only cost around $129.99 at retail. They sold their haslab six years ago for three times less the price they where charging customers for this one and gave people more at that price point than $350. No wonder it failed.

    I don't support Haslab for the only reason that a company the size and weight of Hasbro should not resort to crowdfunding a product.
    Also, Hasbro is probably only listening to the fanboys and those influencers/channels who suck up to the company and the product managers in order to stay on their good side and get preferrential treatment.

    So, I am glad this failed perhaps it will send a message for the future. I doubt it but here is hoping. I have backed 2 Haslab projects the Sentinal and Galactus. The Sentinal was such a huge disappointment I sold it and I am hoping Galactus will be better as it was probably the most interesting project to me and one of my fav characters from Marvel. Point back to that Galactus they did a pretty great job, 32" tall, light up features, highly articulated, multiple face sculpts and not 1 but 2 completely new figures one of which I would have never expected to get made. Not sure why they could not do this kind of work with all haslab projects. Now, I was not in for the Rancor at all, even if the unlocks had been good, maybe if the price had been lower say 200$ ok maybe. I am a MP transformers collector so I am used to dropping considerable bling on a single figure but for sure 350 was too high for this product. Honestly this could have sold at retail for 220 included with the back drop, bones and Rancor keeper and it would have flown off the shelves. To your last point, it is funny, Hasbro BS did run a couple of online polls to vote for figures that could come out. The fans spoke and the winners got released. So, it is very doable to poll the consumer for a verified winner.

  • @ChapMeifan
    @ChapMeifan 2 роки тому +5

    I've said it before on other discussion boards and got beat down for it but I still say there is a huge amount of hubris from the Hasbro creative teams and little to no understanding of the people who buy the products. Haslab is most certainly for the elite collector who can drop a few hundred dollars on a project coming out in a couple years. Hasbro takes a stance of telling us what we want rather than asking and doing research. I'm not a Black Series guy and only buy 3.75 so I don't care about this project but I do care about how Hasbro communicates and treats fans. We aren't a cash machine.
    Years ago I got to know Darrel DePriest and other brand managers at Hasbro and they spent a huge amount of time listening to what Joe fans wanted and learned from mistakes. Sure, they weren't all home runs but there was a drive to include fans in the ideas and decision making process (ie: the Cobra Trooper 6-packs). I look at the current Star Wars and Joe teams and there is a massive disconnect. They ignore the fans (especially the 3.75 guys) and make questionable decisions. I hope this was a wake up call for them but I honestly don't think it will be.

What shocked me was how many people were streaming last night for the “Rancor Countdown.” How can people support such an abuse of fandom I will never know. I won’t call them shills though those people do exist. They’re just fans that Hasbro has taken advantage of. The impulse to pledge for something special is a psychological thing Haslab has figured out I think. They will have to do a lot to get me on board with the Haslab business model. I’m awaiting a great GI Joe vehicle for the Classified line, but it better go above and beyond . An o ring Skystriker for over $200 is not going to do it. I will reclaim my childhood, priceless, Skystriker for $30 to $50 and be over the moon. I feel bad for the fans but I feel nothing but contempt for Haslab. Hasbro keeps missing the mark again and again. Were the toy gurus of the past superheroes or something? No, probably not. I don't understand why Hasbro has been so slow in getting more Star Wars Black series figures out into the marketplace. There are many Vintage figures that should already be Black Series figures, but aren't. Which is very frustrating as both a fan and a collector. Next year will be a big year for Lucasfilm. With the arrival of four Star Wars series on Disney plus, hopefully Hasbro will be able to get with the program and make more Black Series figures to fill the demand of their customers. The failure of the Haslab Rancor project has been their big reality check. They need to hire actual fans of the Star Wars franchise to work for the company. Who would work hard everyday to develop more Black Series figures which include a more affordable Rancor monster. The Hoth Wampa Black series figure is a good example. What is possible. Furthermore, eliminate all of the special exclusives at Target Walmart, and Walgreens. Which seems only to benefit the online scalpers

    I am also working on a diorama for them and it isnt cardboard lol, also stan solo is working on a vintage kenner style oola,winner winner rancor dinner.

    Hasbro built an empire in the 80s and 90s with GI Joe and Transformers.
    The real problem.. 70s 80s and 90s kids played with action figures from age 5-12 yrs old. Today? It's Targeted at 3-9 yrs old. I don't think there's enough Adult collectors between US and UK and Canada..

    Every time hasbro makes a mistake my brain cells die. I may be seventeen in two days and I have a learning disability but I know hasbro needs to get their stuff sorted out if they want us to spend more money on something that shouldn’t be priced that high.

    Great constructive criticism and advice Tony, I didn't back it but I do feel bad for the people that really wanted it but I'm am glad the collector basically told Hasbro this isn't good enough, try better the next time. I would've loved a razor Crest but the price and shipping is ridiculous to ship.to Canada, I'd still love a smaller less expensive retail version

    I watched this Rancor unfold last night. I agree with your points. The main one for me was the price was outrageous and the lack of inclusions did not help. The unlocks were ridiculous. Not only far reaching but lackluster. Whoever is involved with that team for this project really screwed it up. The Sky Striker on the other hand is so much of a better deal. The Sky Striker now includes five figures and a ton of accessories, multiple sticker sheets.....and that is before any unlock. The team that worked on the Rancor should take a lesson from the people who have worked on the Sky Striker in my personal opinion.

    I purchased 2 Razor Crests, multiples of the Sentinels, and a Galactus. I just couldn't pull the trigger on the Rancor. The figure alone has to make me feel it's worth it. The Unlockable Tiers should just be bonus and not ways to justify the price of the Haslab figure because then you are buying more so based on a bundle. I agree on Hasbro taking a survey for the Tiers just like the box arts survey for the Galactus. Also how about rewarding loyal customer with purchase points that can be cashed in towards haslabs sort of like what Mezco does.

    The fact that they can’t even keep up with demand for the retro figures just shows they don’t care. Certainly it’s cheaper to make those than any other figure they produce and yet they’re always MIA. Don’t even get me started on black series stormtroopers..

    It's Hasbro thinking that people will pay anything for a collectors item because it's star wars. They completely ignored that people still desire value for their purchase. It was overpriced from the get go with just the rancor, a big hunk of plastic. Then you look at Galactus or the skystriker and all they came with and realize you are getting way more bang for your buck. Arrogance from Hasbro is why this campaign failed.

  • @BainesMkII

    I'd agree that Hasbro as a company doesn't really care whether a HasLab offering fails, as HasLab as a division is probably viewed as a non-vital cog. The HasLab division should definitely care, as the success of campaigns is a vital element of their continued existence. What may be an issue for fans is how much the larger Hasbro entity drives the decisions of HasLab. Did HasLab run three simultaneous campaigns because they were ordered to generate more profits? How much of budgeting and costs outside of their control affect the price and backing numbers that HasLab chose? As for the price point, it could very well be that the way HasLab operates makes an acceptable $250 Rancor an impossible proposition. (That the production would be so compromised that no one would want it.)

  • @ccggenius
    @ccggenius 2 роки тому +1

    It was never going to be the same price as the Skystriker, Hasbro owns GI Joe, so they don't need to pay Disney. The Sentinel would be a better point of comparison, as that was licensed, $350, and DID fund. As for why it didn't fund: they've had to deal with a lot more pandemic related fuckery, so they can't offer as much for the same price; they started the campaign during the holiday season; they started the campaign along side two OTHER campaigns that want your money; those other campaigns are less niche. You can put a skystriker with any Joes and it'll make sense. The proton pack is THE Ghostbusters thing. The only people who want a rancor are the people who want to put a rancor with the rest of their Jabba's Palace stuff, which is only a subsection of the fanbase.

    I love Black series (despite the aggravation of trying to get many of the "exclusives"). I would have loved to add a rancor, but the price they were asking was insane, especially with the initial rubbish they tried to pass off as the bonus tiers. I just backed the Roboskull Mk 2 from Skeletron, and that only cost me $282 with shipping to South Africa. Aside from the fantastic ship, it includes a figure, three drones, weapon effects, alternate cockpit parts etc. And this is from a company a fraction of the size of Hasbro.

    I enjoy and respect your toy opinions Tony, but I think you and many other toy channels are wrong about the price point issue. Way too many people saying these "limited edition" Haslab projects should be near retail price. I expect to pay a premium for an item that only has 10 or 20 k produced and is essentially a custom design that includes bonus items. That's nothing near what we get at retail and paying 25-50% above retail (concept price) for something like that is reasonable to me.
