I wonder if some of these check dams have been raised, perhaps several times, as the silting process progresses? The point being is to increase the retention value of the silt field: i.e. extend the field further & further, back up the wadis to create a more extensive planting opportunity.

wonder how much strategic blasting has been done to fill ravines with boulders and accomplish the same thing at key points along a wash?

Cool vid, but that swallow at 00:03 is a paragon.

Doesn't the water just flow through the rocks or does it store water on the uphill side?

It does; but slowly enough to allow a lot of the water to sink into the earth. Also, silt that is being carried by the water has a chance to settle out.

Good job, how did you carry and move these rocks ?

One at a time, with muscle power. Carry the small ones, roll the larger ones using levers.
You pick places where gravity can help you.

Does silt have any use for anything? Filtering?

It's a first step to soil creation.

The silt is soil. You plant in it and it makes the dams even better because the above ground plants slow the water down and the roots stabilize the soil.
You create a series of terraces for planting trees, forage or other things ... and this makes the water retention even greater.
This is a fairly large one because it's a large wash. You can build very small ones to block small erosion channels and work down the slope one structure at a time, stopping soil loss.

but it's clay that's waterproof?.. i'm assuming they did a study that says that water will be able to be stored in that area. :/

+PeterK But perhaps now (2016) it would be time to issue a professional video documentary of the goals and achievements of the project?

That previous reply from me was just an an accident. Please ignore. Al Bayda is doing fine with these videos and I so appreciate everything they put out as this is a world-changing project. Also it gives us the ephemeral but powerful feeling, which can stir us to action--hope. Who knows but that Al Bayda project may have limiited time or money to allocate to professional filming. Or perhaps film records of the project are not included in their mandate. If that is the case then informal archiving of this project over time is generous and priceless.
