Music by Jon Björk & Epidemic Sound.
"So your names Gulliver? Like the book with little people?"; "Haha yes like the little people book"
Your videos are awesome, thanks for putting in all this effort
I read Gulliver’s Travels as a kid.
I also read Dante’s Inferno as a kid.
Gulliver’s Travels screwed with my mind more, if only because people turning into trees is somehow far less terrifying than being suffocated in a giant woman’s bosom.
Terrifying for you, but I'm sure there are people who would pay good money for that, if they could.
justførkicks
To each their own, half-hearted shrug
fruity garlic Ah yes, children and their many kinks. 💀
@@fruitygarlic3601 being a tree sounds nice
Ok, but can we please acknowledge that music at the end is a CHORAL ALL STAR??? Where. How. When. Who. Why.
SarahWynn Caston it certainly distracted me from reading about Gulliver’s penis
It was in a whole video not just at the end
As a Spaniard I always knew Gulliver's travels wasn't for kids.
Laputa.
Everyone: "Sure."
Me: "¿¡La QUÉ!?"
When we got to that in class, my prof asked us if anyone spoke Spanish and I got put on the spot.
Oh I didn't know you spoke Spanish!
But yeah, not sure I would let my kids read it at a super young age 😂
@@blacknoisyblue solo un poco de español
, y estoy de acuerdo contigo
Castle in the sky?
Some spanish translations for latin america (including cartoons etc.) Translated Laputa to "Liliput" and EVERYTHING MAKES NO SENSE NOW
When I was in high school, I did a book report on "A Modest Proposal", and was sent to the principal's office immediately afterward.
Damn that sucks, in my high school it was required reading in the unit about Satire.
Sometimes life is like a videogame - when you meet enemies you're on the right track.
As a kid, I read the adapted versoin, which included first two parts and omitted a lot of nsfw stuff. As a teenager I wanted to reread this book and grabbed, blissfully unaware, the original version. That was a wild ride, I must say.
It took me a stupid amount of time to realize what song I was listening to in the background of so many parts of this video.

The thing is, people underastimate kids. Bruh, kids are crazy. The best you can do is read it as a child and then read it as an adult and be like... oh... shit. This be good.
Gotta recommend the 1996 tv miniseries adaptation-- Dated special effects aside, it's the most accurate adaptation I've seen, and the only adaptation i've seen that includes laputa, the academy, the houwinnems, etc. It also adds a frame story where gulliver's telling his tale from inside an asylum after returning home, which kind of works as an excuse to have him narrate. It's worth seeking out, if anyone hasn't seen it but enjoyed the book (or if anyone unlikely to tackle the book would like a better adaptation)
I read this probably about twenty-odd years ago and remember thinking, “Have the people who think “Gulliver’s Travels” is a kid’s book ever read it?”
Also, in “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” (the comics, not the movie), Gulliver leads the second incarnation of the League. His cohorts are Leatherstocking, the Scarecrow, Fanny Hill, and the Scarlet Pimpernel and his wife.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is great; Alan Moore is a genius.
Ms. Lola Yeah, he is!
"What in God's good name did you just say regarding Me and My Estate, you Unlicked Cub? It might please the 'man' to know that I graduated Top of my class at Oxford, and at my behest have I numerous secret raids on Newgate Prison. I possess over 300 confirmed kills, you Duke of Limbs."
For anyone who wanted the copypasta
I read a translated and slightly adapted version when I was a young teen, and while the 18th century political satire about a country I'd never lived in flew right over my head, I enjoyed its absurdity very much. It might very well be time for a re-read.
you can't sneak choral all star past me, our madrigals group in high school almost sang it
The Jack Black one made me forget everything. Sweet work.
"Like the kids book?"
Inmortal words of somebody that doesn't even know what the book is about.
"So much for a university education"
Oh god, if someone replied to me that, you bet they wouldn't be able to shut me up for an hour.
Good video btw
I need that Navy Seal/Johnathan Swift copypasta in my life, is there a full version?
not really full length but
“What in God’s good name did you just say regarding me and my estate, you unlicked cub? It might please the man to know that I graduated top of my class at Oxford, and at my behest have I numerous secret raids on Newgate Prison. I possess over 300 confirmed kills, you Duke of Limbs.”
@@LolaSebastian thank you ♥️
Did not know it was considered a children's book
I love the choral arrangement of all star omg
OH MY GOD THE COVER OF ALL-STAR. AMAZING TOUCH!
I'm loving the choir all star
I think I first read this book when I was 16. I never knew that it was perceived as a children's book. I thought it was very weird but the colonial undertones were very recognizable to me even at that age. Thanks for doing a great video!
this is an incredible essay, though as a citizen of a country that rarely gets recognised, I must say that perhaps the most exciting part was seeing a Norwegian clip:))))) thats just how it be
It sheds some pretty tragic light on the Fantasy genre that we have to divorce a work from it in order to take it seriously, even though the important themes of that work are basically hallmarks of the genre, just handled so, so much better, despite being written by a conservative troll from the 18th century
Really cool analysis! Never read the story myself and only knew it through public consciousness, so this was a really neat look into things.
The New Vegas shout out was also appreciated.
if i wasnt following you and saw that thumbnail in my recommendations, i would IMMEDIATELY click on it
edit: after finishing the video i conclude the jack black movie was more accurate than initially apparent, because i clearly remember jack black peeing to extinguish a fire
I can finally contribute something... I have a copy of "Manara Gulliveriana". I friend got it as a joke gift from the Angouleme International Comics Festival. Pretty.. Pretty "French". Really love your work, keep it coming!
Thank you! And that was a fun rabbit hole to go down, thank you for that.
Wait... So the part in the movie where Jack Black pees to put out the fire... Is accurate????
i read gulliver’s travels as a kid and i think that along with the invisible man is why i am the way i am now
Guess who saw the movie (the good one) as a child, multiple times?
I'm nominating this for an Oscar for 1:54-2:00
i remember watching the jack black movie as a kid w my cousins sleeping over at my house
I had a bit of phase of wanting to read classical literature when I was twelve, and of all the classics I've read, Gulliver's Travels was my favorite. It's really amazing how accessible, funny and relevant the book still is.
I was too young and did not have enough to grasp the criticism towards colonialism, but still picked up on a lot of the satire.
fantastic video - your style of essay-writing is so easy and clear to listen to!!
just as a little personal fact so I can indulge myself: my hometown in Ireland homes the original, hand-written book in swift’s handwriting!
Gulliver's Travels is up there for me with Watership Down as one of my favorite stories from childhood that was, uh, not necessarily super child friendly in retrospect lol! 💀
Great video! I haven't read that book in years, and I love the Ted Danson Gulliver's Travels movie.
I grew up on the movie with Ted Danson. Watched it so many times
As an English major I have read a lot of Jonathan Swift. It’s cool seeing someone analyze that considering that I always get the same reaction “Like the Jack Black one?”
I watched the 1939 animated film on VHS a lot as a kid. Didn't realise until recently that the studio got bankrupt decades ago😭
Great vid ms Lola!
OK, where did you get the footage of people in period clothing that obviously isn't from a movie? What corner of the internet have you discivered that I have never even dreamt of?
thanks for the fantastic view of the book as well as allstarcapella
The queen is at it again

Hell yeah, I'm ready
The thumbnail made laugh too hard for me to resist.
I love your videos
in the best possible way u remind me of velma from scooby doo
I get that a lot hahaha.
You should make a video about Little Prince
One of my favorites; I'm definitely considering it
I watch the jack black movie when I was like five and I loved it way to much
I saw the '90s live action movie when I was 14 or 15 and it blew my mind. It's suuuuper long, spanning two whole vhs tapes (god I'm old) and while I've never read the book, from what I hear, this version is remarkably accurate and includes pretty much everything, and even adds a whole bit at the end after he gets back to England and is thrown into an asylum for telling people about his journey and being generally unable to cope with normal society. It's certainly no kids fairytale, but honestly I feel like it's really valuable for teaching media literacy and how to interpret (and even make) allegories.
I knew it wasn't a child's book technically when I read it as a child. However the though then was probably more of the line of when it was written, the concept of children's literature was non existent. However it is as you point out a multi level book. And while I can appreciate as an adult (and even as a particularly observant child) the commentary Swift was relaying on the various topics, I can also easily ignore all that and enjoy the adventure yarn.
I want the entire military copypasta written like a 1700s posh man would
1939 Gulliver still kind of looks like Jack Black 👀
Amazing
Nothing Jonathan Swift ever wrote was for kids.
Nice profile pic
So I've never put much stock into Gulliver's Travels? I guess I was put off by the Jack Black movie? But this was a really really interesting video! I might give it a shot once finals are over. nice job! Good video!
She forgot to mention some very NSFW scenes, so I imagine a lot is lost in the censored version most are familiar with...
Excellent video essay!! I find it interesting comparing and contrasting Gulliver’s Travels with Thomas More’s Utopia. They both are scathing against materialism and the vanity associated with it. More so, I think, than the general criticism against capitalism.
By the way, I saw what you did there in introducing the Choral rendition of the Smash Mouth song at the 3 minute mark and then reprising it at the end. It’s the epitome of postmodernism!!
Wait, people think it's for kids?!
My dad bought it for me when I was about 10, but by then my favourite story was about goat toddlers being eaten alive and their mother having to cut the wolf's belly open to free them.
From Wikipedia: "As "la puta" means "the whore" in Spanish, some Spanish editions of "Gulliver's Travels" use "Lapuntu", "Laput", "Lapuda" and "Lupata" as bowdlerisations. It is likely, given Swift's education and satirical style, that he was aware of the Spanish meaning. (Gulliver claimed Spanish among the many languages in which he was fluent)."
A troll, indeed.
In my homecountry we had a very censored version specifically for children, along with full novel. Version for children included only parts with miniputs and giants, which was also heavily edited.
I loved it and at 13 came across "Gulliver". It was longer then I remembered but I didn't pay attention for that.
It was a full novel.
This was like the first time I actually faced questions of immortality and merits of humanity.
Unforgettable expirience, I must say XD
I'm so glad someone else is actually talking about these themes, Gulliver's Travels actually slaps (and I hated/enjoyed reading it). Also that can NOT BE HOW YOU PRONOUNCE HOUYHNHNMS, NEITHER OF THOSE WAYS MAKE SENSE. I'M GONNA INVENT TIME TRAVEL SO I CAN GO ASK JONATHAN SWIFT HOW THE FUCK YOU'RE SUPPOSED TO PRONOUNCE HOUYHNHNM
A+++++
10:46 Is that Ted Danson?
Epic. So epic.
Ok why is no one talking about her inclusion of I love it by Kanye lmao?!
god i remember watching this in the theater, i was like ten and it was the first time i was really able to realize just how bad a movie was as i was watching it
Could you please caption your videos? Some people need subtitles to understand things. Good video though.
I watched this as a 6 year old 😅
Yes actually I did loudly and disgustingly chortle when I realized the background choir was all star. Thank you for asking.
the clips u use....,,,.the cinnamon topography
I'm sorry but do you watch animation pilgrimage?
Your videos are stock full of old animation that they have reviewed. And only things they have reviewed. Like they aren't well-known animation? Like who has heard of uproar in heaven and why would think to put that into a video essay of lolita unprompted?
Maybe I'm going insane but please answer
But also thanks for letting me know that Britain partook in cannibalism.
I've only seen the movie from 1939 and I'm gonna stick to that.
Poverty under capitalism? You mean poverty.
Poverty in capitalism is the best possible kind of poverty in history.
