About Empires of the Undergrowth:
"Your queen has set up home beneath a rotting log. She is fat, and vulnerable. Her first brood will need to move quickly if the colony is to survive. Their priority now is to find food, and there is plenty around; but there are other hungry creatures in the undergrowth. The workers will need to be vigilant."
Empires of the Undergrowth is an ant colony management game, in a fast-paced real-time strategy style. The player excavates their nest underground, constructing tunnels and chambers to store food and raise brood. On the surface, the ants claim territory, gather resources, overwhelm fearsome arachnids and clash with other colonies. Nest design, army size, composition and attack timing are key to securing victory.
Missions are narrated from the perspective of a documentary film maker studying the ants, who offers intelligent insight into the goings-on of the colony and the undergrowth beyond. The primary game mode in early access is Formicarium, where you take ownership of a home colony of unique DNA-harvesting ants as they work to assimilate the desirable traits of their foes. You can upgrade them by playing one-off missions, sometimes with your home colony and sometimes with other ant species.
Carve out and construct your underground nest to suit your strategy
Engage in fast-paced colony versus colony combat above ground
Play as different ant species and explore their unique traits and weaknesses
Encounter and overpower dangerous beetles, arachnids and other awesome arthropods
Grow your pet formicarium over time by completing missions

Once again, I've never played this game, but from what I can tell you can upgrade your warriors and workers to rank 3.
If I were to choose any of those upgrades, I would say self repair and self preservation for the warriors. The coming onslaught of foes for level two will require you to have not just a sizable army but a strong one.
The self preservation I read has the ants that are about to die run away allowing them to live and thus you lose less food.
Also, the healing will allow your ants to heal up from previous battles and be better prepared for the future.
In summary, for the coming siege prepare for battle. Upgrade your warriors, it's time to call them to arms against the coming invaders.
New Conclusion after commenting discussion: Meat Shield for the warrior ants. The 50% physical damage reduction is the best option if only one can be chosen.
I don't think the upgrades you get in the formicarium transfer over to the missions.

Eric Foltz i think that you have to chose one of the two upgrades left and one of them on the right (saw this in another vid from another yter)
Yeah can't get both preservation and repair, I would go for the preservation though, could save a lot of lives, and thus food as well, where the repair wont really help once battle started at all
You can also buy tiers of workers and warriors, and spend food upgrading them, making them much more effective for the same regen cost

I’ve actually experienced this battle in real life when ants were eating all our ladybugs. So the ants basically win against any opponent.

A role reversal would be cool with this mission so you're the one about to be drowned and you have to dethrone another colony to survive
Baron, I have seen someone do this and it is something you can try to do. You can have different groups of the same ant type by keeping their brooding chambers separate. So not joined at all. It's like different battalions of an infantry regiment. So you could do 2 groups of workers and secure 2 farms. Or 3 groups of Formica Fusca black ants so that you can cover more ground with lesser ants. And of course you can assign some of these so-called "Battalions" to a pheromone control group and send them in one direction to overwhelm a bug or something. It could work
It is best to put these in groups of 10 easier to manage and upgrade tiles efficiently it also helps because you can multitask and collect food faster

Silly Baron, ants are insects a normal bug has a straw like mouth to suck juice from plants while ants who belong to the Formicidae family (which is a family that consists only of ants, no bugs) and have pincers to cut and grab things.
This entire game feels like a national geographic documentary
baron a good strat is to have your soldiers get the upgraade where they can dig so you can have all soldiers and no worker and so you can have a massive ant army of just soldiers

Hi Baron also nice video keep up the good work and get lots and jelly and you can upgrade in challenges I think also don't forget to upgrade your tiles and the upgrades you get for your workers and soldiers to activate/get them while building you need to upgrade the tiles that you put down :)

Hey baron, unexperienced player here, but I just wanted to say that you're kind've underestimating your warriors. They can take a lot of those earwigs! I was watching this other guy, and 20 warriors were able to take down like 7 earwigs! Just wanted you to know so that you can be non-hesitant when attacking with them warriors
P.S. Been here since 2014!! Been "Lovin' It" (lol McDonald's slogan [not intended]) so far

Baron you know when the bugs flew away because of their health have some ants or shooters in the back because the lady bugs use their armor in the back to fly
you can kill bugs by use ant acid (about 20-25) or updrage them, it will fly if you hit him too much

I wish there was a mode like 2v2 and 1v1 or a mode and it's 3v1 but the trick is the 1 person by himself has a army to start and have 300 to 500 food then the 3 other players have to team up on the 1 person and last 2 modes are king of the hill the last one can be like free for all (like comment if you think one of the modes should be added to the game)

Every time you decide to pull back to the nest, you get cold feet, and it always catches your ass! You need to follow thru! Let some get caught in combat and stall the foes whilst the force itself moves to better cover. And/or, make more than one combat group, obvi. This was a blast to watch either way, and you really handled ish well overall!

Btw this game is like cosmoteer in a such a way that empty spaces in your nest can be traveled across quickly, while the nursing areas and food storages slow movement.

Watching this series because i just saw his later videos on this and him not listening to the narrator that tells him what to do then doing the wrong thing like not attacking the ladybugs is very infuriating but I can't wait tp see him improve (Hopefully)
I don't build so many melees fighters cause I use my builders as a shield for the spitters. It costs 20 to build and upgrade a tile + 2 for a new spawn. When they reach level 3 they are very tanky.
Going to give you a heads up for the 2nd challenge it's pretty God dam crazy
Edit: I have 75 warrior ants and I haven't been able beat it yet so you might want to grind food in completed missions

I know you probably won't read this but in every single mission aside from the formicarium challenges, you play as a different species of ants, two of which are in the Formica genus. The Gene thief of Formica Ereptor is the main species that is in the formicarium challenges and freeplay, it is a fictional species of ant. The Black Ant is Formica Fusca which are the ones that you play as in the first two non-formicarium missions titled: “New Home" and “Subjugation". This is one of the more common species of Formica. The Wood Ant also known as Formica Rufa is the ant species that you played as for the majority of this video, they have two soldier types, those being: The Melee ants which don't have the best attack but have really good health for supporting the ranged ants, the Ranged ants are the better of the two and have amazingly good attack but not great health and thus, need a strong group of ants to protect them while also attacking the enemy from a distance. Sorry for the very VERY *VERY* lengthy comment, have a great day or night and stay safe during quarantine.
