About Empires of the Undergrowth:
"Your queen has set up home beneath a rotting log. She is fat, and vulnerable. Her first brood will need to move quickly if the colony is to survive. Their priority now is to find food, and there is plenty around; but there are other hungry creatures in the undergrowth. The workers will need to be vigilant."
Empires of the Undergrowth is an ant colony management game, in a fast-paced real-time strategy style. The player excavates their nest underground, constructing tunnels and chambers to store food and raise brood. On the surface, the ants claim territory, gather resources, overwhelm fearsome arachnids and clash with other colonies. Nest design, army size, composition and attack timing are key to securing victory.
Missions are narrated from the perspective of a documentary film maker studying the ants, who offers intelligent insight into the goings-on of the colony and the undergrowth beyond. The primary game mode in early access is Formicarium, where you take ownership of a home colony of unique DNA-harvesting ants as they work to assimilate the desirable traits of their foes. You can upgrade them by playing one-off missions, sometimes with your home colony and sometimes with other ant species.
Carve out and construct your underground nest to suit your strategy
Engage in fast-paced colony versus colony combat above ground
Play as different ant species and explore their unique traits and weaknesses
Encounter and overpower dangerous beetles, arachnids and other awesome arthropods

BaronVonLetsPlay I think that's smart butt if you're ants are to weak or there is not a lot of them you could put the queen in danger
if you have any ants outside, the wolfspiders will attack them first before going into your home... so defend outside and dont let them in(only by chance one or 2 spiders will come in and your royal guard can handle these if it comes to this)
I think you actually need to upgrade your ants the same way you upgrade food storage. The royal gelly only unlocks the ability to upgrade them.
you should really finish upgrading both the black and worker ants, cause i think they are still level 2 but you have researched level 3 for this already
You should upgrade your tiles. The ants become bigger and more powerful. You bought the unlock, but you didn't upgrade their tiles. Mortar Wood ants gain also a damage range area bonus when they reach level 3. Even the biggest bugs die fast when ants are upgraded to level 3

Yes, it makes a huge difference. I had my guys upgraded to level 3. I rallied my ants on the inside right at the exit as soon as he started sending enemies. Once the tiger beatles were done, i told them to go to the queen. Because they were in combat, the didnt, but when they were killed and new ones born, they went to the queen

To order your ants to retreat you need to alter the pheromone on the bottom right next to your group selection. there you will be able to tell the ants over the pheromone not to gather stuff and only attack or just dont attack and dont gather or dont attack and only gather.
Also you need to upgrade the tiles to use the genetic upgrade.
using those basic mechanics you dont need to grind the missions 4 times but only once for the food supply

Hello Baron , I did the fromicarium challange 2 , I needed 81 melle warriors and 19 workers , first thing first you need to remove a lott of that workers ,keep like 20 , make more melle warriors . Create a separate group of soldiers , you need like 20,only melle ,don't go up ,only for the seeds if you don't have enaugh food , keep everyone at the entrance (not the workers) .After you kill all the tiger beatles , move all your workers and the 20 melle warriors near the queen ( you will need to disable their food gathering and combat to move out of battle ) if you upgrade the second group at max you will be able to easily take out the spiders . I wish you good luck at winning this challenge and I'm waiting the next update .After the challenge you finish the game in this curent state of the game . Yes,this tactic can be done...
Put a last stand next to the queen with a relief force of some worker ants as a flank manoeuvre once the enemy ants have engaged.
Hey Baron, do it like before but keep an eye on your ants which are going to spawn soon, so you simply set a new pheromone marker before they hatch und the front keeps fighting till they die, while the new Ants gather at the new pheromone Marker, which gives your first: Time , second a Bulk of Ants waiting and third tactical retreat

try putting all the ants on the queen (At the start) the Wolf Spiders are very powerful but they can only take out one ant at a time so you gotta swarm them
then they will destroy the food...

food wasn't the issue it was his army being low level and all in one troop so it isn't as versatile also he didn't build like an actual ant colony would his queen is just so open along with his brood
Baron when you were trying to pull the Wood ants back they wouldn't come because they were engaging the enemy ants, but there's a simple fix to that i think, in the bottom right of the group box you can toggle if the ants gather food or engage in combat. I don't know if it stops them mid combat.

Base is to open wolf spiders can just get straight to queen upon entry it should be more of a maze . Not sure if you can move the queen but she really needs her own chamber
In my colony I have two "main" Black ant groups, one of 30 and one of 60, 60 holds the door and the other 30 sits by the queen. Managed this first time luckily enough but I swear the voice over sounds like Pegasus from Yugioh xD
You did pretty good, although the increased venom damage is useless, since the only ant I am aware of that can do venom damage at the current time is the shooters themselves, which you haven't unlocked for them. Physical damage increase would benefit the warriors more, with (refering to upgrades to the wood ant's actual attacks) increased physical damage riding off of that, and venom being good for raw DPS at lvl 3 with AoE poison (currently the best option since it does more for their lower numbers, and the fact that you boosted venom damage).
Wolf spiders are hard to deal with, but they're much easier if you understand their AI. On the surface, they attack whatever they aggro on, but otherwise are extremely fast. If they enter the nest, their AI changes. They go to the brood chambers first and try to kill everything they can find there (usually reinforcements), and then head straight to the queen. This means it's best to either have ants around the queen to aggro on spiders in brood chambers or attacking the queen, or to hold positions outside so that the spiders don't ever enter the nest and adjust AI.
I've beaten this by simply having everything kept on the center up top between the 3 entrances to the underground, so that when the spiders spawn they go after my army and I can kill them before they try to go under. Alternatively, you can spread out your control groups if the spiders are missing your army somehow.

I'd pull the ants back further from the entrance. The choke point is nice but pulling everyone back keeps the ants closer to your queen so they all protect her
The Wolf Spiders go into every chamber before attacking your queen...seeing as your chambers are so big and so close to the Queen, they would make quick work of Her Majesty.
you should put all your ants next to queen on the start of the battle

The method I used was actually just using warriors and workers, 50/50. And instead of leaving your troops at the queen, you post them at the entrance, but on the inside, much like when Baron pulled back. That way there's less chance of them building up around you, outflanking you. I had 4 groups however, 2 equal size worker groups and one large soldier group with a smaller soldier group. I kept all four at the frontlines awhile, but after the tiger beetle incursion, the wolf spiders struck. I failed the first time since I forgot how damn fast the spiders are and did not pull back quick enough, but the second attempt was a success, I pulled back the larger soldier group and had them gather around the queen, alongside one of the worker groups, leaving the frontlines to my other two groups. They were getting pushed back, but held them off just long enough for my ants in the center to grind down the spiders (The royal ants did have to assist however.). And while it may lack in gathering efficiency, my food cavern is behind the queen, away from the entrance, leaving a thin route that forces the enemy to fight for every inch as reinforcements file into the meat grinder. I even placed down speed tiles to make it so my ants hit the frontlines quicker. They pushed halfway through to the queen before the numbers ran out and the last invader fell dead. However, the biggest, most important thing is, that Baron's forces are not trained enough. He invested in wood ants and weakened the meat wall, while not being able to upgrade them at all due to wasting the jelly. I had many abilities unlocked for my other ants and they all can reach max tier.

You can use a button to ignore enemy's or ignore taking food... You can then put all of your groups to the queen when the wolfspiders come and klick the button to ignore enemy's and klick it again to fight at the queens place.
You can set any group to ignore gathering, or ignore fighting... (bottom 2 (of 4) buttons on the right of the middle black box}... thus gatherers can bypass battle encounters, or you can disengage fighters to move to, say, defend the Queen.. (and maybe NOT gather corpses in the midst of a fight}
I was yelling “PULL THE DAMN TROOPS BACK BEFORE THE BATTLE STARTS”
Not sure if you are aware, but if you assign more workers to the 'queens' workers, they can replenish your soldiers that are lost more rapidly. and they will stay near the queen, so if something breaks through they will stall enemies at the very least.
Hi Baron, its really fun to see this video because when I played it I did the exact same thing. I needed five tries to manage to win. So army wise you are ok maybe get rid of some warriors and have 30 spitters. But the important part is you have to grind the jelly and get your units to lvl 3 and also get the invulnerability perk. >Then keep all your workers around your queen and the praetorian army will take care of the rest. Once you have met these conditions you will win. Also if you are thinking "I will defend with all the army around the queen" think again, do not try to defend more inside the gates because they will overrun you. Tried that lost that! Just at the gates you can keep the casualties minimal. Yeah grinding sucks but what can you do. Have fun!

Man this is so enjoyable on a Friday night!
I used a max of 14 workers then 80% fusca and 20% rufa(splash damage). All units upgraded max. Grinded out levels on hard with challenge mode enabled.

Have an extra control group of wood ants next to the queen at all times
There is a choke hold upper hand for the attackers in ur nest. I think u shuld make the opening to your nest a large hexagon, connected by just one choke point that's at least 4 or 5 tiles away from the holes to the surface. Then I beleive u will gain a choke point upper hand. By filling the room with warriors and spotters and only allowing the attackers access to 3 tiles
Half the main army and have twenty of them guard the queen and have the rest(including the spitters) to hold the choke point
The crazy scientist sounds like Lotor from the new Voltron lol
When ur outnumbered like when 3 Species cams go inside too use the choke and make a lot of spitters

Summary of the comments i've seen:
-Less upgrades on workers, more on soldiers
-Manually turn off the "engage all enemies" on your ant groups
-Use the workers to hold the line while your main soldiers protect the queen
Personally, what I think you should do is push the ants back outside of your nest and hold them there. That would free up your ants still inside the nest and you might be able to hold the spiders back, not sure if they'll just push through, that might take some experimentation.
Also, I think I saw in someone else's video that either the rapid fire spitter ants or an upgrade can stun enemies. If you can get enough of those ants, you might be able to stun lock the spiders.
1. upgrade your ants
2. at the beetles call everything back to the queen, the beetles will kill ants and the reinforcements/replacements will go to the queen
Alternatively, I did it with 25 black ants and 25 rapid fire (you went mortar) at the entrance and 25 workers and 25 either black or rapid at the queen, and it was a cakewalk. just make sure everything is lvl 3, you don't need the side upgrades
Just so you know if you want to pull them back select the group and select the atack bites right next to the collecting food one the ants will not attack unles they are attacked so most will still pull back

Hey buddy. Just found your channel cause I've been digging the Empire of the undergrowth. No pun intended. Anyways a tip for you. When you are fighting with your groups and want to retreat ( aka those dang wolf spiders) 😂 click the group you want to pull back on the bottom right area with those 5 groups. There are four buttons on right the two bottom ones toggle the groups abilities to fight and/or gather food.
That scientist dude sounds like he's getting off of ants fighting in an entirely inappropriate way.
Baron you should read the commands that you can give to your ants and you will see how you can pullback from a fight properly
the best strategy i found was to keep all of your workers in the nest box while 1 is your warriors who hold the entrance from the inside and having 2 be the shooters right behind them. without that you dont have enough workers replenishing eggs or protecting the queen. Also having a few workers separate with the evade upgrade gathering food helps distract some of the bigs guys with targets they rarely hit. that way the big guys trickle in vs being in all at once.

baron u need to be careful with ur upgrades u can only chose 1 upgrade on each side of the ants and i dont think u can swap out the upgrades
How about you keep some of the guards to stay inside and some workers protect the king but, when the army comes you can bring the other guards and all of the spitters from behind like a counter attack.
Hey Baron, huge fan of the series. I think you should make a second group of warrior ants to protect the queen in exchange for fewer workers. That might buy you enough time to kill the spiders.

I like to keep the hex that my queen starts in exactly the same. With preferably one entrance to the queen. And I highway in a circle around her. That way u can fill her chamber with warriors and the spiders can only enter from one hole. Giving u a choke point advantage there as well. So u will have 2 Chile points if u utalize the nest entrance choke and the royal chamber room choke
Baron maybe you make two different groups of ant what I mean is two groups of worrier ants one as the queen’s guard and one as the main soldiers and also put your spitter ant’s at the back so they don’t go into a melee and just die :)
Hold at your queen
When he puts in the sustained flow you need to rush your ants exaclty on your queen and make them stay there that way the spiders cant get past you.This is the way i did it
Buy the big wood ants and use then to defend the queen Does big wood ants are strong to protect the queen and use the Royal guards as well big wood ants and Royal guards please use this tactic
You need more warrior guarding the queen use an extra control group and do not engage them until the wolf spiders arrive
I think you should probly have a few seperate forces, maybe keep one force just outside, allowing the one inside to not worry too much about the never ending ants, those ants are your bane Baron, they keep your ants deadlocked in battle, less of them getting into your colony means you can manage the inside force much more effectively, to protect the queen!
put all your ants to protect your queen and the spiters at the back to defend your ant army
Pls do more baron...and you should make a 2nd group of solider ants to guard the queen along with workers...while your main army of soilders and spotters guard the entrance
if you change the missions to challenge mode you gain twice as much reward, though they become a real pain in the butt to do
Send the army near the queen or near her so that there are always some ants near her. Also, use the area where you swap from food tiles to worker tiles as a choke point.

Get enough jelly to unlock the retreat upgrade, then you can order them to retreat manually.

The only ants I don't have is the spitters and the tiles are upgraded to max
you should make a second hole for maybe about 20 larva worriers like you did with the wood ants so you can put them on the 4th or 5th slot and have them guard the queen, I have found out that when I play it's more easier for me to do this that away I don't have to send all 60 or all to the front line

Upgrade the Fusca(Black ants) and Shooter ant tiles, get FIERCE MOTHER(Stuns enemies) and DON'T HOLD A CHOKE POINT, mass at the queen

That's a difficult wolf spider challenge. Do your best.
Try this Baron!
Keep your workers back by your queen.
Your acid spitters won't go back because there are enemies nearby.
But rally the black ant soldiers back to the queen! As some die fighting in the front hopefully they will rally at your new spawn point to defend the QUEEN! Maybe 30-45 Seconds prior to wolf spider arrival, so some have time to mass up.
Royal Guards look strong, do you control their deployment?
you should have done the other upgrade to your Ereptor queen cuz the other ability can allow more ants to spawn so you can literally make an army of ants, Formica Fusca, Ereptor, and Rufa ants

BARON try letting your entire army around the queen so that the wolf spiders get caught up on who to attack
If the ants are blocked fighting and you want to move them, you have to disable fight for a bit and than turn it on again.
I'm at the same stage as you and have tried about the same as you have. The only thing i haven't tried is the DISABLE FIGHT button next to the disable harvest tab. I have to bottle neck up until the tigers hit as they destroy you in the open. The only difference is my food is at 4.5k but makes no difference ingame as the spiders are instant death.
The second you start drag all your ants around your queen
I t would be nice that at the end of the game, the scientist dies, for some reason and falls on the terrarium so his head is covering half of it or so and your ants feast on him

This is just hacks but you need the Meat Wall for the black ants it will stop the spiders.
Don't split range and melee keep them together and don't send workers to fight because they needy to put eggs in the nursery to replenish the solders and range ants also you need the solders to protect the range and use your choking point to your advantage these tips will help a lot
Use the workers as flankers, and with them kill the enemie's spitters
You can set the ants not to attack to make them pull back from the fight!
Baron, you said you have been grinding on subjaction or whatever the hell it was, please can you post 2 videos 1 the cut edited 1 and the full version no cuts, becuse we all love it when you play and i would have loved 2 see the subjaction leves you played so please make it like a card in top right hand corner where we can see all of what you did pretty please
You need seriously upgraded wood ants for the splash damage and Royal guards.
by the way the 3 ant spices starting with the red ants their species name is formica erecta the black ant soldiers are formica fusca and finally the spitters are wood ants or formica rufa

Upgrade all units, I beat it by creating a separate "royal guard" of 6 warriors and 4 spitters that always stay on the queen. I also upgraded her to use royal guard which I did use during my battle. Hope this helps and if not let me know I can give you the numbers that I am using for worker/warrior/spitter ratios.
