I'm very happy to hear that Dean Jones owned one of the original Herbie VW's from the first film. If anyone was the most deserving of this car, it was Mr. Jones. Dean was a great actor and a real gentleman. Rest Peacefully Dean Jones, thanks for the memories.
It wasn’t from the first film, it was a parade car that Disney used. Dean did use it for charity work and was owned by Disney at a point in time. But was never a movie car
My favorite scene was in "Herbie rides again". When Herbie cried for help EVERY VW in San Francisco took on a mind of its own and rushed to Dean Jones' old fire station to stop the cruel Alonzo Hawk from tearing it down.
Yeah, it totally sucks they never recovered it. But I think I remember reading something somewhere, might've been on a old Herbie message-board about how that Herbie used was pretty much gutted out to reduce the weight, possibly with a faux bottom to help make it float along just enough so it could still be recovered, but straight-up just sunk, with only a small motor put in to spin Herbie's back wheels. The scene itself was always and still is extremely painful to watch. His cries especially.
I was fortunate enough to go for a spin in the Porsche powered racing Herbie (H2) that was in 'The Love Bug.' It's owned by Terry's Beetle Service in Hanwell, London.
Everyone calls the 1997 Love Bug movie a remake, but I decline this because due to some reasons, that make this one unique: 1). Herbie's origin story 2). Herbie's death and revival 3). The appearance of Jim Douglas/Dean Jones 4). Horace the Hate Bug
tardis35 I cried when i watched the first movie, in the theater when it was released, i was around 5ish. I was infatuated with Herbie back then! When i turned 16 in 1980 and was able to drive, i bought a beige 69 bug. My first car. he has always had a place in my heart. I know it sounds cheezy as hell, but i'm with ya man...
I have a Herbie and take him to car shows and have won many trophies. People love him . Funny thing I never seen any of the movies till I bought the car. Roadside find. Great video, thank you .
3:16...And if you will also notice, they did not always use a proper "Herbie Generation"(1958-1963) bug. Notice that the greenhouse (glass area) on the bug is not the same as on a 1963 bug (see 3:55). The wing windows had that "Mr Spock ears" look. But I believe that the camera shots showing non-Herbie Generation bugs were few and far between. And they were very brief. That way, the audience is not likely to notice the difference. And even if they did, most people would not care. BTW, Herbie (a proper Herbie that is...7:30) is indeed a "cute little fella", along with the rest of his generation. My dad owned a ceramic green (one off year for that color)1960 bug, which he bought in 1969, just before "The Love Bug" came out. My first car was a red 1962 sunroof bug ("Howard") which I bought in 1972. Later, I had a turquoise 1961 bug, and a gulf blue 1963 bug, both of which I bought in 1979. And then I sold all three of them in 1981. Then in 1982, I bought my white 1962 sunroof bug, which I decked out like Herbie. I kept that for five years. I also had a NON-Herbie Generation 1966 bug, which I had for a little over a year until it got rear-ended and totalled. The vintage Volkswagen gods must have smiled upon me as my only bug that got totaled was the one NON-Herbie (not so cute little fella) bug that I had, while in my 20's.
In the original movies the whole interior paint was changed to flat grey so the studio lights would not reflect on camera. Bugs dash and doors were always the same as the exterior color but they realized the shiny white and chrome had too many issues.
Thank you so much for share this video clip. All information on Herbie . Always enjoy watch film movies of him. Very special little car. If every make all film movies in blueray DVD collection box. Pooru Animations born-again Christian, RIP, i don't think so, afterlife bullshit! How and why we need to remember him, his stage work, Disney level crap?
My favorite Herbie is the one from The Love Bug 1969 and 1997 movies. I also love the Junkyard, ProStreet, and Demolition Derby Herbies from Herbie: Fully Loaded film in 2006. I didn't really like the NASCAR version because it took away Herbie's lovable appearance. But the stripes on the side were cool though. Someday I'm hoping to have my own Herbie. I'll customize him like the one from the 1969 film The Love Bug. Herbie will always be a lovable little Ragtop 1963 Volkswagen Type 1(Beetle) that we all know and love. (0)\(53)/(0)
When the original movie came out, I was 8 years old. Mom and I were on vacation with a friend of mom’s, and her 3 daughters and son. There was a mixup on time somehow and the only way we could see the movie was 2nd half first, then the first half. Still, loved the movie. 🙂. Interesting little documentary here. 👍🙂‼️
The lighter and darker grey tops could just be down to lighting or different types of film or something.. Looked about the same to me at 3:27. Or near as makes no difference....
Hollywood always screws things up today,.. great video to watch thanks for posting! I once owned one of these cars,.. Love Herbie! Favorite Herbie film was with Don Knotts! (Two greats in one movie, Don and Herbie lol) Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo.
A little update: in the Herbie community, someone has posted that Hugh is still well and alright. Around the time this documentary was made, Dean sold that "original" Herbie to him (which is really the parade car from Disneyland), and on the way to the Fully Loaded premiere in '05, the golf cart motor blew and any attempted repair would damage the car's history. As for the mentioned Herbie Goes Bananas car in Planet Hollywood, it was sold to a private entity fairly recently for around $217K. It has the current record for most expensive Bug, beating another Bananas car that sold twice in Barrett-Jackson.
One of the herbie is in the middle of nowhere Idaho. Our orchestra teacher got to drive herbie in the homecoming parade. Sometimes I see him driving around town.
I only ever knew about the early 2000’s movie with Lindsey Lohan although i always remember it seeming like there was more history to the car. Neat to finally find out
Flynn McGuckin 1963 and 1965 models are used, windows are larger in some takes, looks weird. Light and fog is just Hollywood carp, love crap? crap is the best! Love Disney movies? Jodie Foster? Jodie smart, guess so.....Disney smart, just for kids!

Poor Herbie. LOL. I had a 68 Beetle and a 71 bus. Sold the Beetle for $50, the bus for $300. Back in the day. Man, I wish I had kept them. Worth way more today even in bad shape and they weren't. Doh
I'd personally have to say that Herbie looked the best in Herbie Goes Bananas, of course prior to being rusted from being dumped into the sea. I feel that HGB Herbie had a nice combination of racing-inspired detail and the understated and almost "sleeper" look. Herbie looked too factory in The Love Bug, Herbie Rides Again, and in the TV Series (not to mention I never cared for the striping color and number placement on Love Bug Herbie), then he looked too racey in Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo, and Herbie just looked God-awful in the 1997 TV Remake and Herbie Fully Loaded.
I agree, in my opinion Herbie has better design in "Herbie Goes bananas" (Although I also like his design in HGTMC, I also think he looked ugly in "The Love Bug 1997" and "Herbie: Fully Loaded")
The "rust"look Herbie from Herbie Bananas was about 20 years spotted in Azusa Cal. It was then sold to a Dutch car collector who recently sold the car to a Porsche dealer in near Arnhem. That dealer also owns a Herbie that is steered from the backseat. Both of the cars are displayed there between lots of other classic air cooled Volkswagens and old Porsches.

I’ve always had a curiosity of how they came up with the ideal of how he came to be created as a little love bug with feelings and determination of his character that he can win every race for such a little car like he’s the little engine that could
