In junior high I snuck in to the room of my friend's older brother and found A Go Go in his cd player. Listened to the first track, stole the cd. I have been hooked on scofield ever since. Looks like crime does pay.
Sco is amazing. Really a unique player....and amazing! Hard to find your own unique voice on guitar or any instrument for that matter and Sco has done that!!
I had the opportunity to see Scofield in Sweden a while ago. Probably the best concert I've ever been to. Small village too. It turned out the guy who booked him helped Scofield out in a situation he had in Stockholm some years ago. Scofield's luggage (guitars, amps, pedals etc) got lost at the airport and this guy (living some 600 km south of Stockholm) was a big fan of Scofields music and had an exact setup of his gear. He drove up to Sthlm and lend him his gear. As a return favor he played ..
I heard them last night. Such a tight band, such an a mazing guitar player. Only an hour-long set but one of the best gigs of my life. THX JS, SS, BS!!
The Scho man is a revolutionary. He slaps mainstream music in the face and dares to redefine all genres that pigeonhole what is "normal" in the world of music. I saw this guy at the 2009 Jazzfest in NOLA; what a fucking show! I missed out on a lot of great playing over the years, but not anymore.
Sco takes me places. I can't account for all the sounds that come off his fingerboard from watching him. He's like a magician. His tone is an acquired taste, but his feel is something very special. There is no other guitarist I'd rather emulate.
there is a "Like the Moon" tease in here (or at least an extremely similar riff). That song is from the JSB disc "Up All Night." Listen at around 1:50ish. It sounds a lot like the intro to that song.
@egyptianminor I meant Abm7, since he plays Dorian based lines over it, implying this chord is a ii degree mode, hence from Gb Major/Ionian- I chord, hence more appropriate to refer to the G#m7 as Abm7
At first the tone strikes as a bit abrasive, but that quickly passes if you listen to it all rather than just his tone. Wonderful groove going on here with that bit of atonality that just blends so wonderfully with the groove. I quite like the harmonic style here over some of the other scofield stuff I've heard.
@firedancerart still, this is refreshing. Scofield plays this style well even without an organ backing him up, his sound his so full it sounds more than a trio... It's nice there's more than one version for this number.
@Fiddlercrab3 haha cheers, nice to get a reply a year after writing a comment! :) Yeahh I've got into a lot of Kurt's stuff recently, he's amazing! Thanks :)
Hear lots of quotes in this one - I was made for lovin' you; Son of a preacher man... maybe I'm going crazy. Off to see the JS trio in one week, can't wait
Been thinking about the Metheny vs Scofield thing lately. Everybody seems to bring it up. It comes down to what you like to hear. Honestly, they are both equally world class players, but Scofield makes me want to listen, think AND dance, where Metheny makes me want to go to sleep.
@pfarnac1 She is entranced and hypnotized by the music. We can see what she's doing...but she doesn't know what she is doing or where she is. She is blinded by the music and is in Heaven.
Swing is often a term thrown around to mean more than just the traditional meaning (ie, long-short eights). In this case it is referring more to the rhythm in terms of the groove, the accents, etc. Instead of implying that the music is 'swung', it is simply swing'n, in the same way it's kickin', grooving, or another adjective that suits your fancy.
awesome tune. changed it a lot compared to the album. go scofield. you guys need to hear the remake of The House On The Rising Sun he did in his last album This Meets That.
So you want Scofield to sound like all the other players? All great players you mentioned for sure! I personally like and appreciate John's sound ......Very distinct 'John Scofield sound'...not cookie cutter playing.
@fourfinger451 Well, as a matter of fact, I do. But thanks for your initial posting of the pitches (I hope that's the correct term in English - what I mean are the references to the parent scale in Roman numerals).
i like my drummers like my surfboard shapers--named bill stewart. shredding occurs either way. i'll never forget the first time i saw stew play with sco. it was in pasadena in '89 (i think, maybe '90?), and stew had just joined the band as this fresh-face youngster. ripping!
I couldnt agree more.Saying that theory takes away from creativity is like saying the best carpenters only use a hammer. Not to say there arent naturals who didnt study theory and still play well but with todays wealth of musical knowledge why not look at it?
Great video! Thanks for sharing this... Eh? Are those feedback noises? I never thought an ibanez of that class still prone to this kind of feedback! Nevertheless, sco handled that reallly well!!!
A: G#m7 / G#m6 (G#m Dorian/Mel.minor) B: E7/9/13(+11) (E Myxo/Lyd.b7) C#m7 F#7 (C# Dorian-ii/V in B Maj) A 4-3 or G/A (A Myxo/G Lyd.),but @ 1:32 he plays A7+11(A Lyd.dom)or E Mel.minor, since it resolves back to G#m.
i agree with rjminns but i also really like wayne krantz....can you name me someone who plays like him, cos i really like his style and i'd liked to hear more... cheers.....
His playing is right on the edge of what's comfortable- I love it, but I understand how non-musicians would be thinking "what the hell is this guy playing?"
It's a semi-hollow, so if your drive is on, your aamp is tilted in a certain way and you're too close to it (as it seems to be the case for Sco here) you should expect some feedback...By the way, where's Part 4 of this DVD?
You know...this is the kind of groove and feel that makes pregnant mothers go into labor early. I mean you have Scofield the baddest bebop/soul/funk guitarist with his odd timing, Bill Stewart is so sick he sounds like he is playing notes...and Steve Swallow is showing bass players that how you hold down the low end...
@DrummerInExile Good luck with that, dude. NOBODY plays like Wayne Krantz except Wayne Krantz. Seriously. There are a ton of incredible guitarists out there, with their own thing to say, and Wayne is certainly one of them-unique, remarkable. If you like Wayne, you might also enjoy Pete McCann- he's a great NYC player. I'm partial to Kurt Rosenwinkel myself, especially as a composer. Good luck on your search.
is this available on any record i can buy in a store? since it was recorded live, i assume there's some kind of john scofield trio live at blue note CD or sth..?
I agree. when I first heard, JS I thought his tone was thin, and cheap sounding, but listening more to WHAT and HOW he was playing, I accepted that he sounded that way because he choses to, and now I hear him as the world's best guitarist. He can do all the other players. But no one can do him. His body of work shows greater range, vision, control, imagination than the others, That's JUST my opinion. You may like someone else better. That's the humanity of music. Just enjoy what you enjoy.

Great music is not about just notes but silence too and this trio really knows how to use it ... shear pleasure!
I heard them last night. Such a tight band, such an a mazing guitar player. Only an hour-long set but one of the best gigs of my life. THX JS, SS, BS!!
Scofield's soloing has such incredible depth, and the energy from the musical synthesis among the 3 is so palpable, it makes you go into high.
This kicked butt, Sco's music say's so much. I have always loved his tone.
hope you listen to that in heaven,ANDREA love you 4 ever MARCO
This has got to be one of the best trios of the past ten years.
I heard them last night. Such a tight band, such an amazing guitar player. Only an hour-long set but one of the best gigs of my life. THX JS, SS, BS!!
Bill Stewart is incredible. words can't discribe.
I can't stop listening to this. Sco is just...well....the best. His use of dissonance is hard to believe. So sick nasty amazing dank nuggets.
this trio is really amazing, I'd love to see them live!
Nice one Dan keep the parts comin'! Love Bill playin...

Great, pls listen to music via CD and this one is just to see how it was there in Blue Note NY
Thks to all
man, that's PURE GROOVE right there !
Amazing performance!!
Steve Swallow have an unique voice. He is one of yhe great Bass Player.
I agree with it all you said except the sleep line. Two great players and both are unmistakable with the tone/ sound especially Scofield
just superb I'd say. Scofield is my favorite improvisation player ever, awsome.
My favourite trio :D yeah!!!!
there is a "Like the Moon" tease in here (or at least an extremely similar riff). That song is from the JSB disc "Up All Night." Listen at around 1:50ish. It sounds a lot like the intro to that song.
I LOVE THE GROOVE OF SCOFIELD
Awesome stuff!
amazing..and yes, dirty!
Thanks :)
4:23 great harmonics
Simply STELLAR!!!
Were cool now......Me and John and John Scofield .
brilliant .. love the way Scofield sets up the change at 4:23
that meters groove + falling-off-the-edge tone = sco kills
@egyptianminor I meant Abm7, since he plays Dorian based lines over it, implying this chord is a ii degree mode, hence from Gb Major/Ionian- I chord, hence more appropriate to refer to the G#m7 as Abm7

Master of Style.
Smooth and sharp at the same time.
I couldn't disagree more. Everything he plays is completely conscious and intentional. It takes a sophisticated ear to appreciate Sco thoroughly.
Total funkified kick-ass tone-to-the-bone no-holds-barred freedom to explore while escorting the auto-tuned nation to the door.
all i can say wow
@firedancerart still, this is refreshing. Scofield plays this style well even without an organ backing him up, his sound his so full it sounds more than a trio... It's nice there's more than one version for this number.
Steve Swallow is jammin like a boss
yeah trully great musician! :)
happy to seen him in Java jazz jakarta :)
@Fiddlercrab3
haha cheers, nice to get a reply a year after writing a comment! :)
Yeahh I've got into a lot of Kurt's stuff recently, he's amazing!

I like his comping with intervals and three note chords more than his single note lines...but they're great as well.
... and for us guys that hit things ... uhh ...ya got any gum? Mixa whatian? You guys are awesome!!! Killin' band!!! So out and so brilliantly in.
great!

yes, he doesn't mind sounding bad. That is really something to aspire to.
So much better than the album version! I wish he would have cut lose on the A Go Go album a little more.
SoCo And Scofield.....solid.

shreddin from bill stewart...absolutely amazing./....
anyone know what kit/cymbals hes using?
preferably cymbals :D
awesome tune. changed it a lot compared to the album. go scofield.
you guys need to hear the remake of The House On The Rising Sun he did in his last album This Meets That.
Bill is one smooth rhythmicsayer
He just switched to electric in the 60's or 70's (I forget which) and stuck with it. He's always been using a pick on the electric.
Well said.
It's called tastiness, note choice, and groove. "Cannonbo"
@TheApocalyptical1 the discussion was about Lydian or Dorian.. that's whats important. THAT's how he saw you don't appreciate (or study) jazz
So you want Scofield to sound like all the other players? All great players you mentioned for sure! I personally like and appreciate John's sound ......Very distinct 'John Scofield sound'...not cookie cutter playing.
excelente
(that guy is awesome)
@fourfinger451 Well, as a matter of fact, I do. But thanks for your initial posting of the pitches (I hope that's the correct term in English - what I mean are the references to the parent scale in Roman numerals).

@Paiste01 This is in the great music genre, very rare these days!
Don Shula? This is the one and only Steve Swallow... One of the all time great bassists.
I couldnt agree more.Saying that theory takes away from creativity is like saying the best carpenters only use a hammer. Not to say there arent naturals who didnt study theory and still play well but with todays wealth of musical knowledge why not look at it?

1:47 tasty rakes
mega!
top : best : amazing
@Holycrap27 i'm sure he was trying to make that sounds. Scofield is amazing.
A: G#m7 / G#m6 (G#m Dorian/Mel.minor)
B: E7/9/13(+11) (E Myxo/Lyd.b7)
C#m7 F#7 (C# Dorian-ii/V in B Maj)
A 4-3 or G/A (A Myxo/G Lyd.),but @ 1:32 he plays A7+11(A Lyd.dom)or E Mel.minor, since it resolves back to G#m.
even his voice has mad effects.
that's sco's sound. he uses distortion, and the bridge pickup.
i agree with rjminns but i also really like wayne krantz....can you name me someone who plays like him, cos i really like his style and i'd liked to hear more...
cheers.....
swing...feeling. who cares. it is scofield and he is great.
His playing is right on the edge of what's comfortable- I love it, but I understand how non-musicians would be thinking "what the hell is this guy playing?"
YEAH! Practice time.
It's a semi-hollow, so if your drive is on, your aamp is tilted in a certain way and you're too close to it (as it seems to be the case for Sco here) you should expect some feedback...By the way, where's Part 4 of this DVD?
I like it very much. The bass and drums line sounds a little bit like Samba or Bossa Nova to me. Very nice.
Sounds like one of those "shreds" videos.
Steve is like a Zen master.
He man not be flashy, but he's so groovy and genius.
Sometimes you just gotta sit back and watch scofield tear that 6-string a new one.
Who is this drummer? He's incredible!!!
nice pareil comme groove
@DrummerInExile Good luck with that, dude. NOBODY plays like Wayne Krantz except Wayne Krantz. Seriously. There are a ton of incredible guitarists out there, with their own thing to say, and Wayne is certainly one of them-unique, remarkable.

i was wondering about the same thing, are they feedback noises?
is there something wrong with the sound? is anyone else having the problem where the guitar sound is crackly?
is this available on any record i can buy in a store? since it was recorded live, i assume there's some kind of john scofield trio live at blue note CD or sth..?
does anyone know the chords to this tune???????????? PLZ
еще чуть чуть и я буду подпевать
This is the end
Beautiful friend
The end
fantastic to hear it live, but i do miss mmw's unique sound on this song
I agree. when I first heard, JS I thought his tone was thin, and cheap sounding, but listening more to WHAT and HOW he was playing, I accepted that he sounded that way because he choses to, and now I hear him as the world's best guitarist. Oh thanks, I've heard his other stuff but this one sounds like one of those "dubbed over" joke vids.
bill stewart slays
