@@johnlim3357 From my understanding, OP did not mean that he plays like a machine. I believe what he emphasized was that he plays very controlled, very masterfully. Similar to the way that machines perform tasks very easily, I think that OP was trying to say that Bob McChesney plays with such control that he makes it sound easy, which is usually a common trait amongst professionals of virtually any field.

Amazing technique, amazing legato, amazing precision. And it sounds like he's got a really large-bore horn. I've heard one guy come close to this on a baritone horn, but never a trombonist. In awe.

Because music is constantly evolving and so are our artists. Yeah, we could probably do away with a lot of songs we hear now a days, but in all honesty, we don't have all the knowledge of how earlier composers wrote pieces like this. We'd like to think we do, but honestly it's more difficult than it seems.

+James Jenkins Then you'll do just fine (: I've been playing for about 5 years now and I can play the first 3 variations with some very little mistakes here and there, but overall good (:, you just have to work on note accuracy, articulation, tonguing ( double tonguing ), and high upper register. You can work on tuning when you want to and feel comfortable enough to play the first variation and after each variation you learn and can play, tune yourself and play the variations you know. I'd say play the tempo that Bob McChesney is playing at but I'd say about 10-15 beats less? And if you make a mistake it's fine just keep going (: you can fix it later, mark it, make a note of it, and fix it later, also in the video Bob is using a lip trill as he is using a regular tenor trombone, no f attachment, but if you have the f attachment you can use it to trill but if you feel like or think you can do the lip trill you can (: I use f attachment trill, but I'm working on lip trill

He was hardly playing most of the 32nd notes, all he had to do was get close to the pitch and keep a fluent sound and slide. When its that fast, the pitch didn't actually matter as much as the first and last notes. If you listen to one of the fast licks you will notice that he accents the last note and the notes in between you can't really hear.

Bob's technique is flawless. It is great to be living in this digital age. When I grew up playing trombone (70s), there were much fewer opportunities to hear (and learn from) great players.
