When a goal gets disallowed because a man's nose is offside, but another player can use his hands to defend in the box - the quality of soccer is reduced. I've seen so much stuff called over disgracefully small margins and yet hugely obvious plays never got called. If they want the game to be exciting, use VAR to overrule the stuff that one could have seen from the parking lot and let players play. Additionally, PLEASE someone start calling diving. Initiating contact and hurling oneself onto the ground is not a foul and it cheapens real fouls.

There's more money in the game than there ever has been. Some of that flows down to the lower league teams via a variety of different channels. Revenues for lower league teams have never been higher. The scramble by billionaires to own lower league teams has never been greater. This is 100% down to the success of the Premier League and the global interest in the "big boys" that you accuse of not looking out for the game as a whole. I agree they are only looking after themselves, but we cannot argue that their success hasn't brought greater riches to lower league football. Just because it has not happened in the way you want it to, doesn't mean that the game isn't in a stronger place than it was 20 years ago. Ask any league 1 or league 2 player if they are better remunerated today than they were 20 years ago - on an inflation adjusted basis - and they will unanimously answer yes. How is that bad for football?

@@thecountofmontecristo8280 There's a lot more to the pyramid L1 & 2. Wages I'm sure are very satisfactory, but then they more than likely were 20 years ago. My team Darlington had a player in L2 around 2000 on £8k a week, more than enough now. That example by no means typical then of course, all that side of the game has been mad for years. Certainly I want to see fewer cowboy chairmen in the game, that cannot encourage trickle down. Darlington are fan owned now, precisely because of dodgy owners, we only just survived and live on what we can raise and earn. It's a wider malaise, with lots of clubs at risk.

Football needs to be more creative when it comes to extra time. 2 halves of 15mins is not attractive football. Switch it to only one extra time period of 15 mins and take out 1 player from each side. A 10 vs 10 will open up the field to scoring of goals, plus team will be allowed 2 additional substitutes in extra time to the current 5 subs used for regulation period. This will enable more tactical play and strategy. Coaches will need to earn their stripes here. Southgate says that England have gone deep into every tournament when he was a coach. Okay, let's see what opponents he had to face :
    WC 2018 :
    Tunisia (W 2-1)
    Panama (W 6-1)
    Belgium (L 0-1)
    Colombia (win on penalties)
    Sweden (W 2-0)
    Croatia (L 1-2)
    Belgium (L 0-2)
Analysis : they lost to every decent team (Belgium, Croatia) and won against teams they should win against.
Colombia is a tricky side to face, but let's be honest : England should have been able to beat them inside 120 mins.
Euros 2021: (all matches except vs Ukraine AT HOME)
    Croatia (W 1-0)
    Scotland (D 0-0)
    Czech Republic (W 1-0)
    Germany (W 2-0)
    Ukraine (W 4-0)
    Denmark (W 2-1)
    Italy (loss on penalties)
Analysis : yet again poor football and matches won AT HOME (!!!) against teams we expect them to win (maybe Germany is the exception, but that German side was awful given their back to back group stage exits out of consecutive WC). The only good performance was in Rome against Ukraine. Tbh that Ukraine side was lucky to even be in the QF in the first place.
    WC 2022 :
    Iran (W 6-2)
    USA (D 0-0)
    Wales (W 3-0)
    Senegal (W 3-0)
    France (L 1-2)
Analysis : Again, easy teams to face until they meet the first decent team in France and they lose.
    Euro 2024 :
    Serbia (W 1-0)
    Denmark (D 1-1)
    Slovenia (D 0-0)
    Slovakia (W 2-1)
    Switzerland (win on penalties)
Analysis : again, England face the "easy"-side of the draw and scam their way into the deep parts of the tournament.
I would like to see Southgate face Spain, then France and then Portugal (for example). If he wins all of those, we could talk about him being a great manager.
Also just imagine what Klopp, Guardiola, Arteta, Nagelsmann or Ancelotti would have achieved with this group of players. Especially against those opponents.

Easy solution for extra time. Increase squad sizes to 30 and substitutions to 10 players. Playing 120 minutes of football is a lot for even the fittest player. It would reduce injuries and an extra level of tactical possibilities.

Of course Kane needs to be dropped, he was horrendous not only the last game with Swiss but the last 4 tournaments for England. We all know that. But we also know Southgate won't do it because Southgate wants to be known as a player's coach , a coach who's close with his star players and have the support of all starters. Southgate needs this because he knows the world is against him the last 7 years.

I definitely don't want to see matches go straight to penalties personally.
I do agree that fixture congestion is an issue, and unfoetunately the money side of the game will only want more matches to be played. And usually money wins. So likely we will see extra time scrapped in the future. But it's unfortunate.

Stevie Nicol is right about extra time. I think most fans don't want games decided by pens but the reality is if you play 90mins plus an extra 30mins extra time you really can't moan about going to the lottery of pens.
At the end of the day most football fans want to see the best teams advancing and dropping extra time would mean the chances of teams fluking results just got a whole lot bigger.
I am not sure how much extra time players play over a season but I'm willing to bet it's a tiny amount.

It used to be that the international game was the place where the best of the best came together to play. Countries had clear footballing identities and styles of play that were shaped by an entire country's cultural identity. Players easily fit into a country's style because they grew up playing that way. Today, their clubs have far greater influence than their place of birth does. So, you have teams like England, the US, Mexico, the Netherlands struggling to find an identity as a group of 11. And the Swiss have shown that a sense of Identity counts for a lot in this sport.
