1972 De Tomaso Pantera has strong provenance and is a fun car to drive. The car was featured in the Wall Street Journal and also on the pages of Pantera International magazine. It has won numerous awards over the years and the current owner served on the Pantera Owners Club of America board.
For those not familiar with the De Tomaso story, its roots began 60 years ago. In the Sixties, an idea swept the performance automotive world to pair lightweight British sports cars with big American V-8s. The cars born of this concept became legendary, like the Shelby Cobra, Sunbeam and Iso Grifo. The idea made sense because the lithe British cars lacked power and the heavy American cars didn't handle well.
A similar event happened in the Seventies, but this time, De Tomaso decided to create an Italian exotic with American V8 power. Again, the idea made sense, as the mid-engined Italian supercars represented a huge leap in chassis and suspension design, but were typically extremely unreliable. After designing the Mangusta, De Tomaso developed a supercar with Ford 351 Cleveland power-the Pantera. The Pantera was different from many similar cars as it was developed in cooperation with Ford and sold through Lincoln-Mercury dealerships.
The only problem with the arrangement was that L-M dealers had no idea how to sell the car. It was about as far away from their core market as was possible, and sales lingered until Ford pulled out of the project and production fell to almost none. But those rare Panteras left quite a lasting impression. Learn More...
