We do something very similar to this and my wife makes a dish with potatoes, garlic cloves, olive oil, and zucchini where it's all cooked together and that too is pretty darned scrumptious.
When I was a poor art student cabbage was the cheapest vegetable I could buy, so I would steam sliced cabbage and green onions in a colander above a pot of pasta and then combine with olive oil, grated cheese, and seasonings. Cheap, filling, and relatively good for you.

Wood - preferably bamboo - boards are the way to go. Ceramic dulls the knives like no tomorrow. Wood is soft enough not to damage the knife edge. Sure, you can't put them in the dishwasher, but they're naturally antibacterial and gorgeous to boot. The white synthetic boards are another option, but there's nothing like the feel of a bamboo cutting board.

No. Put the broccoli in the colander on top of the boiling pasta. Put a saucepan lid over the broccoli. Thus the pasta cooks below and the broccoli is steamed above, Add all to olive oil and garlic. Drizzle lemon over. Forget the cheese unless you want to put on weight!
