I'm a photographer, I do everything manually on my camera except for focussing. My current phone is a Galaxy S22 Ultra that also lets me do everything manually through Samsung's Expert RAW app. But to be honest? I don't bother. The phone does a good job with the regular camera app. I can maybe squeeze out a tiny bit more from the RAW files in Lightroom but this negligible difference simply isn't worth the effort. As for the zoom range of the Xperia 1 IV, it's impressive from a technical point of view but the range is so tiny, it doesn't really seem worth it to me. It gives me the impression that they just did it to be the first on the market with a zoom lense.
If you are a content creator, having your phone act as a modem for live streaming your alpha camera would seem to justify the price. If you are the type that would actually use all the features, i think it's well worth it.
I agree that that’s probably the only use case that makes it worth it (as I illustrated with the NFL example). I personally don’t live stream and don’t need to do it outside if I do so doesn’t make sense for me but if you make money from live streaming and can justify it as a business purchase then yeah sure! (Again like I said in the video). Also though you can get the Pro-I now for $1200 and get that same ability 🤷♂️ - amzn.to/3a683t2
@@TheUnlockr I don't think the Pro-I can do the livestream bit. External monitor, yes, but not the modem part, at least not yet (needs a firmware update). But thanks for the response. Great video.

Fantastic! Thanks David - easily one of the best yet - fellow Sony user, so maybe a tad biased, but Your Tour of the district was great on it's own 😊 As always, more please!
Something I feel from Sony and their phone strategy is that they pack their devices with some camera features so they show to other manufacturers that something can be done and therefore, Sony sells more sensors, also that zoom feature was packed on Olympus cameras some years ago, now is getting smaller enough to fit in a phone which is amazing. as always liked, missed the bloopers.
They do not. Fact other do not do same stuff later is evidence. Pro Max uses sensor with exactly same specs. So does S21. Just have different names. Apple and Samsung have zero interest in these features.
@@silva_br1 so the adaptive periscope system is only used on Sony but is already on Samsung? Do you know more brands that have the same features than Sony?
You are one of the very few people to do justice to a Sony phone review. You really are spot on in highlighting the strengths of this phone. The only point where I feel you are wrong is at the end when you compare prices with the Sony Alpha cams. That comparison is just not relevant coz for double the price you also get a full action packed smartphone, a gorgeous 4k display, Sony's reality audio, a capable gamer and a ton of other pluses. And finally as they say... no one phone is perfect, so I was hoping you should have mentioned that overheating issue that plagues this gem.
I disagree that they aren't trying to compete with the bigger companies. Sure the phone has certain things catered to a specific group, but it excels quite a bit at most other things too, battery life, gaming, display, speakers, etc..... which are all specs that do matter. It competes quite well with the high end phones from other companies like the S22U, albeit at a somewhat higher price.
Hi. I am watching many reviewers showing off 4k 120 fps in low lights and also basic shots with EIS with kinda shooting on less than 1/100 which is terrible because every single shot is motion blurred and after the EIS does it things it happens to watch a terrible linear blurring by X/Y axis which is terrible. Please guys use more than 1/100 shutter with this kind of tests!
Biggest question I think is OS update support, the least it should be 4 years of Android updates + security updates after that. If it's less than that, it not only hurts sustainability, but aslo does not justify the price regardless of how amazing the hardware is. Anyway, Sony phones look spectacular and I dream to be able to be an owner of Sony phones again, headphone jack, beautiful design direction and probably philosophy not to go with trends every other manufacturer goes make me wanna get a Sony phone. But the prices are a bit bonkers, not talking about this pro one, even Experia 5 series are pricey where I live. Happy to see Sony phones making waves again!
Saw this and it was enough to make me decide to buy one - I have the Xperia 5 ii right now but was looking at buying an alpha camera, this phone seems to give me everything I need; in one place.
Did you get it and was it a good upgrade? I have the Xperia 5 ii right now and seriously consider buying the 1 iv but cant decide if i should wait for the 1 v. - have a nice day :)
@@Hawaleschka - Hi, no, in the end I decided that it was just too much money for me to spend, when my existing phone does pretty much everything I need. Only the battery lfe is starting to degrade. I looked at the new 5, which is also quite expensive and does not really offer me very much - but, this is the way I will go, in a few moths, when it gets a little less expensive (hopefully...)
Great review, it's nice to see that someone it's will aware of the product he is reviewing and not only complaining, and comparing it with other flagships made for different costumers and usage.
When discussing price, I think it's worth mentioning that it is made in Japan and not China. I know Samsung or Asus are not made in China either, and I believe it can be an important factor for people who look for more "ethical" products. I would never consider buying a Pixel for this very reason.
Very enjoyable video David, the camera on that thing is amazing, especially the zoom feature. As a Brit your videos are showing me there is a lot more to NYC than just Manhattan, so next time I'm over i will be exploring Brooklyn!
It may not compute together mega range and saturated images for the common masses, but when they're using them to deliver parts of their precious live broadcasted games, that tells you not only how Sony's been in the imaging industry for ages, but how it simply isn't made for the basic bloke.
Love the side fingerprint, dedicated camera button, microSD, and real zoom lens. However, with that price, Sony should have used better camera sensors that they supply to other phone brands yet not their own Xperia. I have owned the last 4 Xperia flagships, low lighting was never as good as Samsung and many other phones. Pop in that 1-incher from Pro-I please
I love your video style, but you missed the opportunities to use the manual mode of camera and video because the other photographer can make the photos and videos look much better with manual mode, and compared it with other flagship with AI camera, ofcourse it will look worse for the average consumer
As the owner of Xperia 1 ii and iii, there are several issues with Sony phones: 1. Camera - the photos are too dark and too dull. If Sony boosted the brightness a bit and added a bit more vibrancy, it would take better photos. 2. Camera - focus. Sony is the only phone I had that consistently take pictures slightly out of focus. It really sucks when you take a couple of portrait shots, and then open the image on a PC to find out that the face is blurry. 3. Price - considering that Sony offers only a mid-range quality of camera, its price is astronomically high. Sony offers a better form factor than S22 Ultra. However, considering that the camera tech is not as good, and everything else is pretty much the same, paying extra $500 for Sony doesn't make sense.
sony are made for professional camera users, it can take outstanding pics if you learn how to set it. its not for general population who wants instant results.
@@DemonOfEndor You couldn't come up with a more lousy excuse. First, it doesn't offer any of the advanced features other camera apps have. Second, aside from forcing you to spend an hour before taking a single shot (something that takes 5 seconds with other phones), these advanced settings offer little to no value - the resulting images are marginally better at best, and would be worse than auto settings in most other cases. These "advanced" settings are nothing more than a gimmick for people to feel like they have pro control over the camera, when they don't. Pro photographers use Sony cameras because they know mobile doesn't give you the same results.
@@DemonOfEndor Nope - just posturing on your end to make it look like something isn't what it is. All these settings don't produce better images, just take time to tweak them without any tangible improvements. Only people who want to appear as if they know something others don't mention them.
@@LandIsFlat And yet people who actually use professional settings get stunning images with this phone and there are plenty of videos proving it on YT. Sony is not consumer oriented and always was professional oriented. You mean to tell us that a company which is known for producing one of the best, if not, the best tv, cameras would give a mediocre camera on their phone? Call us when Samsung or Apple gets to produce such things which are used in movie studios to this day with utter success. You are giving out mediocre arguments against this phone because you are unable to use its settings. If I would get into a more complex discussion with you about the camera you would be unable to even understand what I am talking about. Enjoy your unnatural, supra saturated, ready-to-go camera that most phones have today for people not bothered enough with photography complexities. (because when was the majority intelligent enough anyway?) Just showed you are not a pro let alone someone who understands photography. I await for you to give descriptions of camera settings and other particularities in the meantime and then we can talk with the same language. Until then, go for something any r*tard can use today because it does everything for them so they do not have to use their brain much - Like Samsung or Apple. If you want a camera that makes night look like day because of too much brightness, go on. But do not talk trash of something that is beyond your aptitudes just because. LOL, of course professional photographers would rather spend 1k on a camera if that is their job rather than a phone. But the phone comes AS CLOSE as it can for a phone to the quality of the Sony cameras. but it is STILL a phone. Of course a phone wont even compare to a camera whose PURPOSE is to make photography. And yet, there are plenty of phone photographers who still use Sony. Even regarding tv's, same issue: Samsung gives out supra saturated but not very detailed, while Sony gives out natural colors and high definition. Well, what can you expect out of japanese quality vs Korea made in China? Sorry, Sony is not for Instagram influencer types or average people who prefer unnatural pictures. There is a reason Sony is a name in the minority who knows quality and not the majority. Majority is never right.
Great and very comprehensive video. I love Sony smartphones but two things that prevent me from buying: 1. Insane prices, 2. Poor heat management (Camera shutting down when weather is hot)

But I learned a lot about how to take a quality picture and how to express your artistic side of photoshooting. I am not a pro but phone definatelly is. Pro 1 mark 4 is no different. Price?! Hard to get a phone with such superb specs bellow 1000,00.
Great video! How does the Xperia 1 iv compare against the Google pixel 6 Pro in your opinion? Would you say the photos are better in one or the other? And what about the video quality? Cheers.
Thanks for that real life test, great video and really promising, even battery life. Which firmware did you have? I read a lot about overheating and poor battery life. Especially on overheating, did you encounter any?
If I could somehow justify buying one of these, I'd do it! My inner photographer (circa 2005! 😂) would kill to have something like this! Great real world episode!
Good honest review, always had an Xperia as I like taking pictures but nothing professional. I'm getting some really nice pics but am struggling with focus on the 85mm lens on video. Interestingly, I hand down my phone's so my mum has the Xperia 1 that I replaced with the 4 so my 10 year old now has the ZX2, I showed her the basics in manual mode and she's now snapping some nice stuff. I think this is where it works for me, each phone is more capable. Was cool to use the ZX2 again though!
Love the design and the features. It's way out of my price budget.. as you said sony is targeting a niche market of professional content creators that have the budget to buy cameras
I love my Xperia 1 III, apart from its puny 4500mAh battery which can drain fast under heavy usage due to its 4k 120hz refresh rate display, it works excellent as an external display for my other camera system. The Xperia 1 iv is the next step up and definitely would get for its capability of 120fps video shoots in all lenses.

This phone is farking amazing! It is better than the iPhone 13 pro max I had before.I bought it right after I saw this video. The cameras are more professional and the light catching property is much more natural than the iPhones do. Sony is a bloody monster on the phone market which is so obvious, they're just expensive! I really have to wonder why they have review units out so early. They must be super confident in their software updates that most of the aggressive problems with it currently are taken care of That being said, if the software side of the camera gets as good an update as the rest... Well, it's going to be an absolute hit. I'm glad Sony is finding its niche market with this phone, and otherwise not compromising for a broader audience
I've been living with the Xperia 1 ii since launch for 2 years now. I switched from the galaxy s8 and chose it for many of the reasons other people choose Sony, they're an enthusiasts phones. Unfortunately since day 1 it has proved challenging to live with, the amount of bugs it still has is infuriating and the camera software isn't good enough for the price you pay for the Sony phones. Also spending over a grand on a phone it has got to feel special and they just don't. 4k display was on the 1mki, same fingerprint scanner, mediocre cameras, headphone jack with no mention of a decent DAC. The phones have stagnated and in the presence of S22 ultra's and 13 pro Max's I can't imagine Sony retaining many customers if they don't up their game.
Good afternoon, I am also a photographer and videographer. Say please? Which is better for photos and videos: SONY XPERIA PRO-I or the new SONY XPERIA 1V, 5V models, please advise, tell me which one to take? Thank you very much in advance!
Still on my XZ2, had it for five years. Think this phone MIGHT be the one I was waiting for. Think it was worth the wait. Is it waterproof like the XZ2? Or take photos underwater? Also is there a bundle with them SONY Noise Cancelling headphones (not earbuds) ? Or do I have to get separately. Does the slo' mo just record 5 seconds worth like the XZ2?
well done to Sony for the features but unfortunately am going to return. mine. the heating up problem is worrying to the life of the battery. I hope next year theie offering will deal with these problems better
Nice real world review and tour! Though.. a suggestion and a bit of critique.. Could you make the majority of the video samples at least twice as long? Yes, I do understand why you gone for this more rapid "flashy" style of editing, i.e. it looks good and keeps your younger (cough, cough attention lacking, cough, cough!) audience interested until the end of the vid (hopefully..🙄😏). Yeah, I know I sound like a grumpy old boomer here, even though I'm actually only 37. Which may or may not be alarming in and of itself..😄 But nonetheless.. I do think my complaint is more than justified, since the whole point of this vid, or most of it at least, is to present a solid real world comparison of the top flagships toe to toe, right! And with the quite stressed speed where you're only giving your audience an average of 1,5 - 3,0 sec for each example, they end up having to "5 sec rewind" like 5-12 times or more, just to be able to catch the differences in every example more or less. So If you please would extend them by at least 50-100 %, I and I'm sure others too, would greatly appreciate it! Thanks again for the clear and good selection of examples, using all the lenses, in all kinds of different light settings and environments, all throughout the review! Have a good one!

If I'm only mirrorless camera user , rarely take videos. But love to take pictures , love Mode M,S,A in my camera.
Is it worth to buy this phone?
Or is it better to just buy Samsung or Apple.
Fantastic! Thanks David - easily one of the best yet - fellow Sony user, so maybe a tad biased, but Your Tour of the district was great on it's own 😊 As always, more please!
If you you visit SONY STORE at GINZA, TOKYO JAPAN, time flies.... So many goodies out there. this smartphone is amazing. I love SONY.
I love the new features. Will be upgrading my Mark I soon!
Thanks for the constructive feedback and for watching as always, Chemy
UA-camrs are bought so dont expect to much hehe
@@nigeltown6999 alright that seems to be a solid choice 👍
- thanks for the reply :)
If they fix that jitter in your videos while you walk, then I’m sold
I love how under processed video looks from the Sony
Stay amazing and thank you for another amazing real world test ❤️
Thank you for watching!
You are bloody amazing! Superb video as always!!!
Aw thank you so much!
Very enjoyable video David, the camera on that thing is amazing, especially the zoom feature. As a Brit your videos are showing me there is a lot more to NYC than just Manhattan, so next time I'm over i will be exploring Brooklyn!
Thanks so much and I’m so glad I can show you other sides of my city!
The video I’ve been waiting for!
Thank you for being patient!
@@TheUnlockr sure thing, bro
You have one of the best styles of review out there. Keep it up
Thank you!
Another day, another great review!
Every new phone that comes out reminds me how I much I love the P6P camera
That was really detailed. Good look at what it's capable of doing right now.
Always love your real world test of smartphones. Awesome!!!
Interesting to me, is how phone prices vary by country. In Scandinavia, this phone is cheaper than both s22U and iPhone 13PM with same storage config.
As the owner of Xperia 1 ii and iii, there are several issues with Sony phones:
@@LandIsFlat that is a lot of words for "I don't know how to handle a camera"
I'm in love with this phone the camera is amazing it gives you a professional camera setup line cinematic video natural colours i think photography is complete when you take raw photo and then edit it but the price is out of the budget i can prefer and sony camera and any flagship cell phone with 70% price of thirs phone 📱
Great content, as per usual! Hope things are good David! keep on keeping' on.✌👍
Thank you!
man your videos are phenominal
Really loved your review. I hope you'll make another one for the new version with the new type of sensor. Just lost my phone, need to get a camera in the next 1-2 months to record for UA-cam... So it's either get the new Xperia V, or a ZV-E10 / ZV-2
Even in my dreams i will pick Sony ❤️.
I pre-ordered the Xperia 1 IV for €1400 and it comes with the legendary WH-1000XM4 headphone 🎧 It's a good deal.

I’m definitely gonna take a bike ride over to Industry City sometime this summer. Great video. Sony was never on my radar before 🤔 Looks like a cool phone for the right person.
Glad I could show you some things! Def head over but maybe on a weekend when it’s more lively!
I bought xperia pro-i. It is one hell of the phone. Yes there is a learning curve how to take photos with it. But I learned a lot about how to take a quality picture and how to express your artistic side of photoshooting. I am not a pro but phone definatelly is. Pro 1 mark 4 is no different. Price?! Hard to get a phone with such superb specs bellow 1000,00.
13:27 now put him on a Segway like they do at the cricket:)
Awesome review! 4k120 is pretty good selling point. Been using iPhone for 10 years so....maaaaaybe...
If I could somehow justify buying one of these, I'd do it! My inner photographer (circa 2005! 😂) would kill to have something like this! Great real world episode!
Ha and thank you!
hey david, i like your videos and the storys you tell..whats your current favorite smartphone? much love from germany..
Thanks for watching the videos! Don’t have a favorite I swap them too often and there’s too many new ones every week lol
IMO, the main attraction is 4k 120fps which not found on any phone, even most high end cameras. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Thank you!
You really notice the over sharpening on the 13 pro when side by side with the other 3. Wow!
5:30 we could have that now if people didn't complain about a large camera bump :)
they are on the right track, but more improvement is needed for me to go over to Sony
Love the design and the features. It's way out of my price budget.. as you said sony is targeting a niche market of professional content creators that have the budget to buy cameras
I was hoping you’d cover this !
Thank you for waiting!
My only wish is for Sony to use the main sensor on all 3 cameras. It might just be enough to better have photos inline with eachother.
short answer yes because of jack and sd slot. The downside is sadly the narrow design. I'd like it to be the size of an s22 or s22 plus
Hi. Just wanted to ask something. Are there options to reduce the refresh rate to 60hz and reduce the resolution?
@@muhammadsyakirahmadazhari5430 Settings>Display>High Refresh Rate. This is where you can adjust the refresh from 60hz to 120 Hz and vice versa.
There is no way to adjust the native display resolution.
@@GreasyFox Thank you very much for the information kind sir 👶🏻
This phone is farking amazing! It is better than the iPhone 13 pro max I had before.I bought it right after I saw this video. The cameras are more professional and the light catching property is much more natural than the iPhones do. Sony is a bloody monster on the phone market which is so obvious, they're just expensive! So you guys want a premium phone for cheap? Forget these cheap thoughts and read the law of attraction book! I can't get enough of this phone, it is just too useful in daily life.❤
Great video as always
Thank you!
Still use sony xperia xz1 ❤️
I really have to wonder why they have review units out so early. They must be super confident in their software updates that most of the aggressive problems with it currently are taken care of
That being said, if the software side of the camera gets as good an update as the rest... Well, it's going to be an absolute hit. I'm glad Sony is finding its niche market with this phone, and otherwise not compromising for a broader audience
Do you have a 5G connection on the phone? If so which carrier?
Thank a bunch for your honest review... I hav a question? Which camera and lens you using for making this video
Really want you to do the Vivo X80 pro real world
I've been living with the Xperia 1 ii since launch for 2 years now.
Front video looked quite blurry which is shame as for the most part it looks really good
Great video once again 👏
Thank you!
Good afternoon, I am also a photographer and videographer. Say please? Which is better for photos and videos: SONY XPERIA PRO-I or the new SONY XPERIA 1V, 5V models, please advise, tell me which one to take? Thank you very much in advance!
This guy is down for the revolution.
Wow xpeia camre mind blowing
Still on my XZ2, had it for five years. Think this phone MIGHT be the one I was waiting for. Think it was worth the wait. Is it waterproof like the XZ2? Or take photos underwater? Also is there a bundle with them SONY Noise Cancelling headphones (not earbuds) ? Or do I have to get separately. Does the slo' mo just record 5 seconds worth like the XZ2?
Is this a decent phone for gaming??
Nice. If it is an iphone, lens flare would be everywhere.
In Socialist Singapore it cost 1.5k USD and it comes with WF-1000XM4 Black and Xperia 1 IV Leather Phone Case.
When you were sitting down at Industry City and talking to the camera, were you filming on the Sony Xperia IV?
When I film on the phone it says on the screen that I'm filming on the phone. If it doesn't say that then I'm not filming on the phone.
well done to Sony for the features but unfortunately am going to return. mine. the heating up problem is worrying to the life of the battery. I hope next year theie offering will deal with these problems better
Did you have overheating issues with the phone??
The issue with Sony is after sale support. I can’t even find spare parts to fix my xz premium screen
The price is actually justifiable considering it comes with 512gb and expandable memory.
omg I want that Nutella Bombolini. Looks bomb
Same lol
It’s now available for £999… worth it at that price? Currently own an iPhone 15 Pro Max and am not impressed with the cameras especially the 5x one…
Sooo... The dynamic range on this phone is still VERY limited :/
Also, can you switch seamlessly between the cameras when taking pictures and when recording videos?
Which camera is the best to take photos of persons?
