  • Surviving a Fall Snowstorm in Sarek National Park - Late September 2023
In this video, Matti bring you along in to Sarek National Park. The goal for this Wildlife Expedition was to search for the famous Sarek moose and other wild animals like brown bears. This is one of our guided hiking trips that we offer on a yearly basis.
This year we didn't know that we were going to face a very early winter storm. We first got a couple of nice days and we got to see really amazing northern lights one night, but then it turned into a wet and snowy winter experience. We all survived and made it in a good way but the level of comfort was kind of low… It was actually so low that we decided to leave Sarek one day earlier than planned. At the same time as we where in there, the mountain rescue had to bring out people from the area who didn't manage because of the snow storm unbearable freezing and injuries. But, we survived the snowstorm and came out in good health and with memories for life.

We are Matti & Stina and we live in Northern Sweden in a small place called Jokkmokk. Except for making videos we also run a small company called JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA and the WORKING HUSKY KENNEL. We offer guided outdoor tours in Swedish Lapland all around the year. During the winter we mostly do sled dog tours and in the summertime, it’s hiking tours, wildlife safaris, canoe, and packraft trips. We live year-round in Jokkmokk with our 50 Siberian Husky and 2 Border Collies.

The single most valuable thing you professional hikers can do is to share the difficulties one can have during a hike. That decreases the risk that we wannabehikers underestimate the challenges. Tnx a million!

This reminds me of a hike I did in jämtlandstriangeln a number of years back, the last weekend the stations were open. On our way out we met a band of people with running-shoes and black plastic bags over them (they were getting out, we were getting into the area). The temperature was just above freezing and it was raining horizontally because the wind blew so much. On our third day the weather was so bad and cold that my friend started going into hypothermia so we had to make sure he became warm. We were (are) both seasoned outdoor-people and both saw the indications of his condition fairly early. We warmed him up and had a nice evening in the tent and continued our walk the next day (and got a room in one of the cabins the final night to compensate for the previous night).
The mountains are dangerous and it's obvious that you guys were prepared for situations like this, and know the signs of hypothermia and other situations that might arise. From my understanding there has been a big increase in people hiking in the mountains the last few years and I'm really glad that there are people like you guys that end up in situation like these and can spread awareness of how quickly things can turn to a situation way outside of your comfort zone.
I keep watching everything you guys produce so keep up the great work Matti & Stina :)

      Thanks!
That’s really a game changer if you can reach a canine. One night in the cabin and you can dry out your equipment and then continue. Our problem in Sarek was that everything just continues to accumulate moisture.
Jämtlandsfjällen is fare south but not easy mountains. It’s the area where I grow up and where I spend a lot of my free time. It’s very close to Norway and the ocean. The weather can change extremely fast there. People think it’s harder up here in the north but that’s not always the case.

I was in Sarek Park at the same time, during a snowstorm. Probably a few kilometers from your group, on the other side of Rapadallen, near Ijvarlahko. It was windy and I was happy to have the Hilleberg Soulo. Sarek is an amazing place and can surprise you.

Nice to hear from you here at UA-cam. I still have to edit the video from our tour. I just got stuck with story and lack some material… but something will come from that trip also. :-)
This year was very wet… Like we had the last day. Our trip wasn’t easy either… From 2024 we plan to make the trip almost one week earlier so we maybe can avoid the rough weather… ;-)
…but the moose chances will sadly also be lower then… Difficult decision.

That coffee pot have been around and I usually bring it when I’m not using it over the fire. I don’t like it because it got a totally unnecessary non-stick coating on the inside.
I think I will look for a coffee pot made of titanium or made in stainless steel.

Helicopters is not super expensive anymore… Specially if you’re a group that are sharing the cost.
Anyway I’m not only pro helicopters. They make the nature areas smaller and it’s people who shouldn’t be out there who come there now. They fly in with base camp, beer cans and not always bringing everything back home again. Some of this groups are also fishing and take to much of the fish so the reproduction will be lower.
But… it’s like always. Nothing good is only good or nothing bad is only bad.

Ryggsäcken är en Seek Outside Unaweep 4800 på 79 liter (små liter). Skulle hellre haft en större modell med samma bärsystem. Jag har gjort en review om du skrollar i våra filmer. /Matti
