I tried this a while back. Remember how you grabbed some "useless cobwebs" at the start? In my run, I got a single cobweb, placed it on a pot to break the pot, ran into the web to recollect it, rinse and repeat. Just replaced that annoying torch part.
This is a lot easier actually because you can break pots with anything you can place, which includes coins. Just get the guide to kill a few slimes and you can break pots. Now, you cannot pick the coins back up but you can just keep doing it until you get torches so that you can break more pots until you either find a chest with wood or bombs or break a pot with bombs in it.
You also can't see deep into caves, especially since black is truly black (did it always used to be like that? I can't remember when I really should having played so much).

The initial way I think to solve this is run around and look for surface chests for torches, bombs, ect, break pots with torches and explode trees or an underground structure for wood. by then hopefully you’ve found some iron or lead in a chest to make an anvil and tools
Hey I was just thinking about doing this myself recently and now youtube shows me this. I know you can throw away/delete your tools and can''t actually make them again easily... Update: So I tried it myself but kept the wooden sword because having Kevin shoot everything for me wasn't the kind of challenge I wanted. I consider it a sharp stick he found on the ground. Every time I thought the world gen had me stuck I eventually pushed forward more and ultimately I did it after I found a sparkle wand I missed which helped me get into an underground jungle area that was punishing me, through to the two chests which had silver and platinum bars inside! Not enough for a pickaxe but enough for an axe which I used to get cactuc and craft a pickaxe. Like I say I wasn't really going for the challenge I like to roleplay different limitations sometimes, so now I have the axe and pickaxe I'm kinda sticking to not chopping down trees except to clear land or mining except to make a furnace and visible surface ore. Luckily I can get wood by shaking trees with this axe every morning!
There's plenty of other ways to do this. If you wanted more of a challenge you could try and make the reaver shark be your first tool. To get to that point you would need a rod, some bait, and the ability to reach the ocean and not die. The probability of catching the reaver shark, as a "very rare" tier catch, is your Fishing Power divided by 2250, and the highest that value can be is 1/5 or 0.2 for a 20% chance. And then after that it has to pick the reaver shark from the "very rare" catch pool in the ocean which would be the reaver shark, the sawtooth shark, and a golden crate. So you have to get a fishing rod and some bait and then survive to reach the ocean and then have a FP/2250 (max 1/5) divided by 3 chance to get the reaver shark. I'm sure I'm missing something in the probability because of the complicated nature of fishing power, external factors, luck, and more.
Step one: find a surface chest with any weapon Step two: break several pots and slimes Step three: use explosives found in pots on trees Step four: make two to three houses out of the wood Step five: use the merchant to buy a pickaxe and an axe.
i actually tried this once. i had so much fun with it. i remember having to restart because there were cliffs that i could not jump over. still fun to me nonetheless
when minecraft player watches this video: me: starting off with nothing? does not sound much of a problem gungnir: you cannot break stuff with your fist me: okay just search for village or other structures
I really like the idea of adding this into an already daunting challenge, a Calamity difficulty mode for example. So many possibilities, but it might be a bit too much.
"bit too much" Nah. It's more-so just kinda pointless. Especially with Calamity since literally all you'd need is like 2 bombs and enough rope to reach the first planetoid in a small world, which really isn't much. And that's ignoring the extremely easy way to just grab ONE bomb, ONE torch, and be entirely set with a living wood tree house. This entire process would at most add like 25 minutes (most likely closer to 5-10) to the length of the single hardest challenge I've personally ever done, which is still to my knowledge the hardest genuine challenge that wasn't "no jumping or whatever" types of pointlessly inflated difficulty challenges anyone has ever done for terraria. (both youtube and google searches for anything remotely related to it still only find my own comments talking about it so uh... yeah... and I still haven't found a harder combination of mods despite actively trying. (there's a couple recent ones that came somewhat close, but they still didn't reach the difficulty of "spam teleporting 100 mph EoC that shoots a 12-directional projectile and charges/teleport spams at you every second")
You could also have used the living tree to get or skip the anvil. Convert the rooms into NPC houses by placing torches, plus a chair and the crafting bench in the empty one, then spawn the merchant and buy an anvil or basic tools.
Before watching this is what I'd do Find chests Get bombs/throwables Use throwables to destroy pots With bombs get rid of dirt and wood Make a house Let merchant move in PROFIT
I didn't watch the video yet, but I think this is quite simple. I would just do as follows; find a weapon (such as a spear) in a wooden chest, get bombs from a gold chest (or any way) then try to blow up as many trees as possible. make a house for the merchant after getting 50 silver coins, then you're set for the rest of the playthrough.
Did this. Named my character Steve and gave him a look like him. First world I started had a giant tree on the right, and a giant hill on the left. Immediately soft locked
oh true yeah you can make a workbench too honestly this could be speedrunned in like, sub 1 minute with good rng... find a seed with pots near spawn, then a desert close by (not too insane) get lucky with some bombs and find 3 tall cacti, or some in a group, run complete
Just thinking for a second could give you the answer. Wood can be gotten from some chests or by using bombs on trees / chest houses. Iron / lead can be obtained via chests. Boom, pickaxe, axe, weapon. + weapons from chests / enemies. Guide could kill slimes and zombies, that could give slime staff or zombie arm.
I'm gonna guess how it's done without watching the video. 1. Find a chest 2. Open the chest 3. Find bombs 4. Use bombs to blow up wood and materials 5. Craft tools 6. You are now where you would usually start.
If you'd had enough wood, an alternative option would've been to build two houses and get the merchant to move in and buy an anvil from him. EDIT: Couple of things since they've been brought up. 1) Yeah I completely forgot that tiny split second where he said he'd skip building houses for a new plan. My bad. 2) I also thought I heard him say at some point that he was going to make the anvil his goal rather than the tools, hence my comment. (but in reality he just says he needs one because it is literally the only way to get tools without the merchant).
@@adiplier That'd require you to get into the big tree to begin with and unless you get a really weird/lucky seed you'll typically need a pickaxe for that.
Here's a theory: Get some bombs from a chest and use that to blow up some trees for wood. Then craft at least a hammer so you have a weapon. Kill skeletons form bombs till you can blow up the most abundant ore you can find to make a pickaxe. From there it's pretty easy to progress
Even if your guide spawns before you get any of the drops, you can still use coins. But, its kind of hard to get coins when you cant kill anything. However, if you are lucky a falling star can kill a zombie or something and you can still break pots.
I havnt watched the video yet, but you could get wood in a chest, or farm slimes untill one drops torches, then allowing to break pots, the get bombs Edit: ok litterally 5 seconds after posting this you did that lol
(0:38 into the video) playing terarria for only about 40 hours myself, all you'd have to do is avoid dying until you found tools in chests, or had monsters ko themselves in lava...
Yeah, It's underestimated how freakishly strong Steve is. Considering how many cubic meters of gold he can casually carry around on planet with higher gravity he is Dragonball Z level of absurdly strong. Also he can literally punch holes in all destructible materials with his bare fists.
Yeah but late game terrarian still curb stomps Steve, Steve is just outclassed in both range and mobility and the terrarian can instantly teleport away to an unpredictable location if it somehow is taking too much damage whereas Steve really can’t get away from the terrarian because of the harmony staff. Not to mention the best weapons and armor Steve can get is netherite which doesn’t hold a candle to the late game armors/weapons in terraria
Plus the amount of gold Steve Carrie’s only totals to about 44,519 tonnes, whereas the terrarian with a full inventory of thrones and platinum armor can carry about 1,775,652 tonnes.

Before watching and coming from a noob, here's generally how I'd expect it to go: 1. Get boomerang/enchanted boomerang from overworld chest 2. Use boomerang/enchanted boomerang to break pots to get explosives 3. Use explosives to acquire wood (if not from normal trees than living trees) 4. Build a crafting bench and start playing like you would normally
Just get some bombs from chests and pots, bomb the trees, bomb the slimes, make some housing, get some coins from chests, get a merchant, buy a pickaxe and an axe from him, then go on as if it's a normal playthrough. Just explained it without even watching 30 seconds. Of course, you need luck to get a chest, but still, just that and you're free to go

I'm sure I'm missing something in the probability because of the complicated nature of fishing power, external factors, luck, and more.
english please, we are gamers, not mathematical professors...
That's just stupid and pointless waste of time
Doing it this way is fine enough
Fun fact, I’ve actually done this on accident before. I didn’t know how to play and just gave up on my new character.
Step one: find a surface chest with any weapon
Step two: break several pots and slimes
Step three: use explosives found in pots on trees
Step four: make two to three houses out of the wood
Step five: use the merchant to buy a pickaxe and an axe.
Or you could use explosives to get cactus pickaxe.
@@scarieallan IF there's a desert nearby
step six: beat moon lord
Step 7 profit
Step 8 repeat
this kind of challenge is only really interesting until you find something to use, then there's just no challenge
Well.. then just try to beat the game without using any tools

Finding the living wood room also would have been helpful as all you'd need to do is drop a torch in there and boom, a place for NPC respawns.
No, in 1.4 they changed it.
You need to add your own walls
@@neki134 still absolutely fine, he has plenty of wood for a hammer by that point
@@vincentwei9869 you cant break living wood wall with wood hammer
@@Cat-yx7xc yes you can. It's slow but you can.
i actually tried this once. i had so much fun with it. i remember having to restart because there were cliffs that i could not jump over. still fun to me nonetheless
when minecraft player watches this video:
me: starting off with nothing? does not sound much of a problem
gungnir: you cannot break stuff with your fist
me: okay just search for village or other structures
As someone who doesn't play Terarria, I just thought you always started out with nothing, like Minecraft.
Well, you learn something new every day.
I really like the idea of adding this into an already daunting challenge, a Calamity difficulty mode for example. So many possibilities, but it might be a bit too much.
In newer versions you can just find wood In a chest then the challenge is basically over.
"bit too much"
Nah.
3:46 : Carefully planned out

You could also have used the living tree to get or skip the anvil. Convert the rooms into NPC houses by placing torches, plus a chair and the crafting bench in the empty one, then spawn the merchant and buy an anvil or basic tools.
Would’ve spawned gnomes
@@elfinstuff8934 YOU JUST GOT GNOMED!
The world has a lake next to a big tree, and it has crimson. It looks like one of Ningishu's speedrun worlds.
Have you tried placing down coins? It might work the same as torches
Before watching this is what I'd do
Find chests
Get bombs/throwables
Use throwables to destroy pots
With bombs get rid of dirt and wood
Make a house
Let merchant move in
PROFIT
you would need to also get at least one gold for him to move in, which wouldn't be too hard
@@gamersnake1475 50 silver, right?
@@juniperrodley9843 right
You can break pots using coins.
I tried this challenge before the video came out, and was actually able to beat the game. It was pretty fun! I recommend trying it.
Did this. Named my character Steve and gave him a look like him. First world I started had a giant tree on the right, and a giant hill on the left. Immediately soft locked
Three easy steps to:
1) get a torches
2) get a bombs
3) bomb a cactus
And there it is, your normal playthrough
You say it as if it's extremely easy to do so
@@joshricaborda1014 it' not that hard, you just need a good rng
Or, just place a copper coin to break your first pots
Where do you get the torches, govyazhiy doshirak?
@@godricktheminecrafted3113 as said in video you can get them from slimes or zombie
The best way is just finding bombs and the look for a desert, because you just need a few cacti for a cactus pick
oh true
yeah you can make a workbench too
honestly this could be speedrunned in like, sub 1 minute with good rng... find a seed with pots near spawn, then a desert close by (not too insane) get lucky with some bombs and find 3 tall cacti, or some in a group, run complete
Such a simple but fun idea
Always makes me want to play more terraria
Just thinking for a second could give you the answer.
Wood can be gotten from some chests or by using bombs on trees / chest houses.
Iron / lead can be obtained via chests. Boom, pickaxe, axe, weapon.
+ weapons from chests / enemies.
Guide could kill slimes and zombies, that could give slime staff or zombie arm.
@random content uploader you can only make a wood sword
no pickaxe or axe
I'm gonna guess how it's done without watching the video.
1. Find a chest
2. Open the chest
3. Find bombs
4. Use bombs to blow up wood and materials
5. Craft tools
6. You are now where you would usually start.
I tried this, it's hard if u can't find a chest
If you'd had enough wood, an alternative option would've been to build two houses and get the merchant to move in and buy an anvil from him.
EDIT: Couple of things since they've been brought up.
1) Yeah I completely forgot that tiny split second where he said he'd skip building houses for a new plan. My bad.
2) I also thought I heard him say at some point that he was going to make the anvil his goal rather than the tools, hence my comment. (but in reality he just says he needs one because it is literally the only way to get tools without the merchant).
Or just put torches in one of the underground big tree rooms, get the merchant and demolitionists to spawn and buy what you need
@@adiplier That'd require you to get into the big tree to begin with and unless you get a really weird/lucky seed you'll typically need a pickaxe for that.
@@DJFlare84 Fair enough
He did mention that he stopped going for the house route so I think he already had that in mind.
or just make wooden tools... lol
Here's a theory:
Get some bombs from a chest and use that to blow up some trees for wood. Then craft at least a hammer so you have a weapon. Kill skeletons form bombs till you can blow up the most abundant ore you can find to make a pickaxe. From there it's pretty easy to progress
As a side note I said this before I heard him say bombs and I was just like kek he said it. Looks like I'm smort
Even if your guide spawns before you get any of the drops, you can still use coins. But, its kind of hard to get coins when you cant kill anything. However, if you are lucky a falling star can kill a zombie or something and you can still break pots.
Terraria: Bombs? you want it?
Gungir: yes
Terraria: too bad
Nice. Putting yourself into these types of situations helps you think of other ways to do things.
I havnt watched the video yet, but you could get wood in a chest, or farm slimes untill one drops torches, then allowing to break pots, the get bombs
Edit: ok litterally 5 seconds after posting this you did that lol
It depends on RNG, If a hill with a chest spawns with bombs thats basically good since you can get stuff with the wood
100% rng, if you find a chest with like 3 bombs, find a desert, make a cacti pick lol
can't believe he missed the crimson pot at the crimera jump, smh my head.
The beginning of the game is the most interesting part of Terraria to me. I may try this challenge.
This video is very entertaining, that was insanely lucky world-gen you didn't get soft-locked!
Literally 1 year ago and 2 likes, from a verified.
I remember trying this challenge about a month ago. My first goal was to find either wood or bombs in a chest.
I would have loved to see the whole playthrough. Starting from absolutely nothing to end up defeating moonlord! But great video anyways!
I mean to be fair after you get the tools its jist a normal run
(0:38 into the video) playing terarria for only about 40 hours myself, all you'd have to do is avoid dying until you found tools in chests, or had monsters ko themselves in lava...
My Minecraft Brain didn’t realize this was a challenge
Wand of sparking did a harder version of this, beat Terraria without the letter E. (all starting tools have an E)

@@benkoehler9799 for the same reason why people play games like Dark Souls. Pain and suffering is well rewarded by feeling that you are better than the others, because you are able to overcome the difficulty that others are afraid of.

Tip: If you get lucky world generation and get enough bombs you could get wood and hopefully build a house for a merchant. If you didn't know a merchant can sell a copper axe and pickaxe. But remember you need lucky generation + enough money (you can get money by shurikens, bombs and grenades. Also loot chests for wood and iron so you could get iron stuff. Then you can beat the game.
I've done this twice now, once in Modded and the other in vanilla. Modded was harder, because of wood not spawning in chests pre-1.4.
I didn’t think this would be as big of a deal as it ended up being!

Come on . That was fun
I did it and yeah it was hader in my word but still fun
how did this man not produce a lick of anger when he died all those times lol
I would love to see an entire playthrough without tools!
Also, you can get wood early without bombs by shaking trees
need an axe to shake trees
after you get tools, its just a normal game, so there's no point in continuing with it since it wouldn't be that special
Having played thousands of hours of Terraria this was very painful to watch. GREAT VIDEO!
I've been looking for something to help combat my depression as my family falls apart, I came back to good ol terraria and have been looking for a challenge. Thank you Gungnir for giving me this challenge.
Now to come up with a world name and seed
Why not construct a cobweb over a pot and walk over it to get it back, reduces luck required for this by a small bit.
Ok, but what if you placed coins over the pots?
There needs to be a speedrun challenge for this. No weapon/tools to start and the challenge is to get some.
Tips: in a world where you can reach desert from spawn without mining, consider go there and get 25 cactus, this allow you to craft the cactus pickaxe, with cactus pickaxe, head underground for underground cabin. Here you can find anvil and enough wood for axe.
You could do cobweb->bomb->cactus->cactus pickaxe and you’d save a lot of time

Before watching and coming from a noob, here's generally how I'd expect it to go:
1. Get boomerang/enchanted boomerang from overworld chest
2. Use boomerang/enchanted boomerang to break pots to get explosives
3. Use explosives to acquire wood (if not from normal trees than living trees)
4. Build a crafting bench and start playing like you would normally
god the dungeon defenders music, it takes me back
You could have totally have used the trees insides for houses and spawn the demolitionist there! lol

Before watching this video ima guess that he makes the guide kills slime for money until the required amount for the merchant and buy tools from him
but how's he gonna make a house for the merchant?
Just get some bombs from chests and pots, bomb the trees, bomb the slimes, make some housing, get some coins from chests, get a merchant, buy a pickaxe and an axe from him, then go on as if it's a normal playthrough.
Just explained it without even watching 30 seconds. Of course, you need luck to get a chest, but still, just that and you're free to go
