  • Welcome to episode #22 of our Franchise Mode series with the Vancouver Canucks on NHL 24! At the halfway point of year #6, we are at the bottom of the NHL as defending Stanley Cup champs and need to make the appropriate decisions if we want to have sustained success with the Canucks. EVERYTHING MUST GO! Leave a comment with any and all of your suggestions and I'll do my best to incorporate them into the next episode! :)
    DATA782 HALL OF FAME VOTING: forms.gle/8SmDPhTCwHnEUwyw6
    Canucks Google Sheet: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...
    The Vancouver Canucks are a franchise that have been through decades of misfortune, mismanagement, and, really, just pure disappointment. With nothing to show but three Stanley Cup Final losses in their 50+ years in the NHL, the Canucks are on the brink of returning to an all-time low as they have only made the postseason twice in the last decade, have one of the shallowest prospect pools in the league, and are easily in one of the worst salary cap situations. With no where else to turn, Canucks ownership has made a call to GM Data and his team of Assistant GMs to do the impossible: fix the unfixable team.

    For the draft, draft Fiset at 10, trade up to about 17 to draft Fedoruk, trade up to about 34 to draft K. Johansson, trade up to 87 or so to draft Aalto, draft D. Montoya with your 4th round pick, and draft Kravchenko with your second 6th round pick. You can choose how to attack the rest of the draft.
    For trades, trade Norris so we can capitalize on his value. He will most likely regress due to only getting 49 points and I believe he only has 1 or 2 years left on his deal. Trade Hamilton as he is old and only has one year left. Trade Ritchie as he is the oldest of this logjam of young guys that is fighting for top six time. Mohammed Schenn is also an interesting trade piece, but I probably would hold off on trading him until at least next year to see if he could become something for us. My goal for these trades is to get one or two younger top six forwards, a younger top 4 defenseman, good prospects, and future picks.
    For contracts, resign Räty at $5.325M X 4 (he has produced like a second-liner in his career, this is fair money), Lekkerimäki at $3.675M X 8, Podkolzin at $1.725M X 2. Resign Brzustewicz, Segal, Burish, and Wilde for the AHL. You can decide on the rest (except for DeSmith, he has been terrible this season and is old). Sign all of your expiring unsigned players.
    I think the lines could look like this next year:
    1st F: Trade Acquisition-Pettersson-Tippett
    2nd F: Räty-Goldmann-Lekkerimäki
    3rd F: Musty-O'Brien-Niskala
    4th F: Free Agent-Free Agent-Podkolzin
    Depth F: whoever
    1st D: Hughes-Hronek/Trade Acquisition
    2nd D: Hanifin- other one of Hronek/Trade Acquisition
    3rd D: Bouillon?/Free Agent-Free Agent
    Depth D: Free Agent
    G: Jones-Free Agent
    Depth G: Free Agent

      Thanks Gen Z! I think when it comes to the proposed lineup for next season, we want to make sure that we explore the option of a top-5 pick who can join the team right away, as well as any free agents who could be interesting. Trading Norris/Hamilton/Ritchie/etc. is possible, but the value wouldn't fetch us a first line forward and a top 4 D in addition to other pieces to add to the pipeline. Speaking of Norris, if we're moving on from Ritchie, I wouldn't mind keeping him as 2C (which has been a difficult spot to fill our entire series) until we have a better plan. Still a lot that can change in an offseason as we well know, but that's kind of where I'm coming from! Thanks again for your thoughts and we'll see you in the offseason :)

    Maybe not the most important observation, but Mohamed Schenn jumping up to Medium Elite is encouraging but he also had a shite ton of penalty minutes and I wonder if that's because his fighting tendency is set to 'often' ? Either way, spending that much time in the box might keep him from reaching his shiny new potential and perhaps it's time for the 'Gordie Howe' talk where a coach sits him down and tells him 'Alright, you've showed us you can fight, now how about you show us you can play hockey' where you can then turn down that tendency to rarely or even just sometimes if sticking up for his teammates is that much apart of his identity as a player. Either way, there could be a new Sheriff on his way to Vancouver which as a MTL fan I imagine you'd be excited for!

    • @Data782
      @Data782  3 місяці тому

      That's definitely a fair consideration! I'll be curious to see how he develops with another year of top AHL minutes. From there, we can assess his growth in relation to his on-ice output and see if we want to just use his trade value or have him join the NHL squad. I'll double check on if we can change the fighting tendency but I'm quite certain that we can't. That being said, I agree that that talk should be had with him because I for one would love to have a new sheriff in Vancouver! ;)

    trust the process vancouver! GM Data is here to bring you back to glory! I believe we should improve dougie. Although hoping Miro Heskinen falls to free agency why not love to acquire him on draft night!? I also think ritchie’s window is getting slimmer. With the growth of O’brien I think it pushes ritchie’s out of a spot in the top 9. Lines going into next year (In the perfect world) F1: Raty-Petterson-Tippett F2: O’brien-Norris-Lekarimki F3: Musty-Goldman-Podkolzin F4: Depth guys D1: Hughes-Heskinen D2: Hanifin-Hronek D3: Mcissac-Depth D (Risto type D) G1: Jones G2: Backup Role Goalie expecting cheap contract in FA… Great video Data! Yes Rowan that's what we love to hear!!
      You raise a good point about Heiskanen.. I wonder what Dallas would be looking to acquire/if they seem to have the money to re-sign him. We can definitely look into that before free agency! And I think your proposed lines are great in a perfect world! Just sad that the reality is that we can't be sure about our prospects just yet. Like O'Brien as LW2 and Musty as LW3 would be great, but we saw a lot of ups and downs from them. Bringing in a big top 6 forward would give us someone more reliable, but it would spell the end for some of those younger guys so I want to be careful not to rush anything yet. Maybe a top-5 draft pick joining the top 9 and then big money being spent on a defenseman like Heiskanen would be the offseason moves..? A lot of moving pieces so just thinking out loud!
      So glad that you were able to enjoy the Saturday noti! ;) The next episode should be this next Saturday, as well! Thanks for the love and for taking the time. See you at the draft!

      Thank you kindly, sir! Glad that you liked the moves. I can't promise anything on O'Brien/Ritchie/Musty, but I will say that my plan is absolutely to wait until after the offseason to consider any trades if possible. I don't think all of them can stay in the top 9 with the players we'll be adding at the draft/free agency, but waiting to see how they all look and then making an informed decision will be better than taking a gamble (unless something that we really can't pass up comes our way). Thanks again and see you in the offseason!

    Smart to go the retool route even if the draft class is weak. Obviously go for the low top 6s, a medium elite goalie, etc. But I think the time is now to make a game-breaking move.
    Let’s look at Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes - two high overall, highly paid leaders who have not lived up to expectations in terms of production. I think this is less of an individual problem and more an issue of having to carry their team on their back and create the offense. If you really analyze it the best player that Pettersson has had on his line was 88 ovr Raty for that one season and occasionally Miller. No wonder he can’t get above point per game. I know I’ve said it a lot but - this team needs another elite forward. The islanders will probably be willing to move second overall - maybe Hamilton would interest them? Buss, Salmelainen, Lundqvist or Niel would all be great fits on the first line as soon as next season. If not then Fiset looks like a steal at 10th.
    I don’t think the retool is over but the light at the end of the tunnel is starting to shine. I don’t know if pushing for playoffs next year is the move but you never know! It was also great to see Schenn improve to med elite after the long year in Vancouver. Great video data and thanks for the content - it always makes my day better when I get the new video notification. Also can’t wait for the data HOF next induction class! Go Nucks and see you in the next one

      Well said, Gaben! I fully agree! EP40 hasn't done what his real-life counterpart is doing, but I think he's done his best (albeit disappointing) with the linemates we've given him. Let's add in that game-breaker or two, whether it be through free agency or drafting, to give us some sort of top 6 of X-EP40-Tippett & Raty-X-Lekkerimaki or something along those lines, of course depending on prospect growth.
      If anything, my leash is shorter on Hughes. Mr. Sim Beast who has demonstrated point-per-game+ abilities year in and year out has now given us back-to-back duds according to his standards. One of those FA d-men may be helpful.
      That being said, while the majority of the selling is done, now will be the time to add through trades/signings/drafting. I wouldn't say we're PUSHING for the playoffs next year, but we could definitely be in the conversation depending on the offseason moves. Thanks so much for the love and I'm very glad to be able to add that brightness to your day! ❤️ See you for the DHOF induction and the big offseason ahead!

    Normally, I'd stay far away from a A- head coach especially this far in, but after how the team played down the stretch, Suter at least deserves a chance to take the reigns. But, I'd hire a A/A+ coach with good fit as associate coach and use them as a Plan B. I'd definitely target Quint late in the first. I'd be tempted to try and move up to get Lundqvist. Not only is he a gem, but the Canucks do have a history with drafting highly ranked Swedish forwards (The Sedins, Pettersson...) just saying.

    • @Data782
      @Data782  3 місяці тому

      Agreed! And if that's the case for our associate coach, maybe we just keep Roenick? Or because we know he didn't have a great fit we scrap him altogether and find one with a better fit?
      Great point on the draft 👀 We'll have to see if Lundqvist is a possibility as that would fit the storyline for a few good reasons! Thanks Scott 👍

    Hi Data great episode quite the entertaining sell out I think the majority wanted. Lets go with proposition, firstly I would keep Ryan Sutter one more year to try im out he wasn’t that bad with the new roster in the end. For the draft I would absolutely move up for either one of the two gems in Salmelainen or Lundqvist both interesting roles with good attributes and pottential X-Factors. Who or what to move easy the 10th overall Ritchie or Musty and one or two third round picks could do the job maybe. For free agengy I think you should target a top 6 playmaker like Nuge if he falls in the pool, he could bolster the youth scoring. Also try to grab some third pair Dman with good line fit. Sad to say but King Casey as done enough for this franchise maybe trade him to a solid contender that needs a backup and grab yourself a new backup around 83 and 81 overall in the free agency pool with high speed/agility and poise. I’ll leave you there and good luck and most of all have fun trough out the draft and free agency.

      @Data782  3 місяці тому +1

      Hey Louis, glad to hear! Thank you kindly ❤️
      Agreed on keeping Suter for another little bit to see what he can do. For the draft, Lundqvist is really speaking to me but the value will be hard to swing in that top 3. Moving #10 won't be hard and adds the majority of the value, but it might still take another 1st+ to get it done. We'll definitely try with, say, Ritchie and some 2nds/3rds mixed in, but if the pick isn't on the block, it might be very costly. I still think it'd be worth it, but we have to be ready to open our wallets!
      For FA, guys like Nuge are tempting but it will depend on the overall of whoever we draft. If we can get like an 82 OVR, he'll join the top 9 right away and be ready for the top 6 very soon if not right away. Committing to a big top 6 guy might be a bit messy. We'll follow up on that. Agreed on 3rd pair D/backup goalie! Thanks for all of your thoughts and we'll see you at the draft! ;)

      I don't think that's it. We've seen both incredible growth and complete stagnation from players we've signed and from players we've let stay unsigned.

  • @CheatingHeel
    @CheatingHeel 3 місяці тому

    It's going to be a big offseason with a lot of decisions to make.
    Do we want to commit over 5m$ to Raty as a low top 6 potential? I like his and he's a steady high 50 to low 60pts players but, no matter how much icetime we give him, he doesn't seems to increase his production. Of he stays, we're probably looking at 2nd line minutes for him; lets give 1st line minutes to someone who can actually grow.
    Do we want to move on from some of our stagnating prospects like O'Brien, Ritchie and recently acquired Musty? The lack of growth at 23/24yo is concerning, we might want to capitalize on their value while it's still high-ish. To be honest, I'm pretty much ready to throw the towel on O'Brien and I'm on the fence on Ritchie and Musty; I was expecting more with the icetime we gave them in the 2nd half.
    Do we retool the defense by trading Hamilton, Hronek and/or Hanifin? My first thought is that we should probably move at least 2 of the 3 for younger options that can play right away (or use 1 for a younger option and 1 + picks for a top 5 pick). We could trade the other one later if we get someone to take his spot via ufa.
    Do we bring back DeSmith. At this point of his career, I'd say no and work on finding a suitable replacement. He's been good for us but to expect him to still be part of the solution at his age is probably wishful thinking. Lets not tarnish what he did for us by keeping him past his expiration date and have the fans turn on him.
    If anyone wants to move a top 5 or 6 pick, I say go for it. With this being a week draft, we can trade most of our picks for ready now players; lets target some early to mid 20yo players that can step in right now, especially on defense, to replace our aging core. Pushing the picks to next year could be an option but, lets face it, we already have a lot of picks next year too and there's no guarantee the draft class will be any better. If we can get some very good "right now" value and upgrade from guys like O'Brien / Ritchie to better and ready prospects, we should explore it. Using some of those pick along with guys like Hanifin to get younger on defense should also be something we look into. Lets figure out what picks we need to draft some of the good options and lets use the rest for help right now.
    In a perfect draft world:
    We get a top 4 pick to draft Lundqvist and have the flying Swedes as a 1st line (Lundqvist-Pettersson-Lekky).
    If we can get that pick without trading our own 1st, we can draft someone like Albert or Fiset. I'd go with the dman if available and if we draft a forward in the top 5. Both look like they could have x-factors so I'd be ok with either.
    We probably need to keep some pick to target Zubov around 160, Kravchenko around 190, Montoya around 120, Valette, Barriball or Akerlund with our 7th round picks but, other than that, I wouldn't waste high valued picks on low top 6 kind of players; might as well trade the picks.
    We could also hope to get at least one of Heiskanen or Bouchard on the free agent market (if we can get both, even better). Not sure how he simulates but maybe Svechkov could be an option. Perfetti and Evangelista are definitively interesting. Maybe even Pelletier with his 5 stars shooting. There are some good potential options in their late 20s to play in our middle 6 that wouldn't break our salary structure and could speed our way back to the top.
    We can turn things around in a single offseason if the stars align and some players drop to free agency. Lets be bold out here and do what's necessary to get back to the top! We've done a lot of changes last offseason and some prior to the deadline, now is not the time to stop, lets complete that retool and put it behind us.
    Go 'Nucks!

    • @Data782
      @Data782  3 місяці тому

      Yes it will be! I did a little bit of research and have some thoughts but I'll work through your comment first..
      Makes sense on Raty. We'll sign him to something more average of a second liner and go from there. However, I wouldn't be opposed to potentially seeing one more year of him as LW1 if we're going to be drafting a highly touted prospect who will be in the top 6 soon (if not next year). If we go out and get a big LW1 but also draft a future 1st liner, that would mean someone in our top 6 getting pushed down to the 3rd line in the near future. That leads me to..
      Yes, our prospects. There's no way O'Brien/Ritchie/Musty/Goldmann are all fitting in the top 9 next year so at least one if not two will have to go. I think my patience has run out the most on Ritchie, but I wouldn't say we're in a HUGE rush as we can always wait for offseason growth and promise ourselves that we'll make a trade before the start of next season.
      For the defense, I think moving Hamilton makes the most sense as he's great but we don't want to lose him for nothing after next season. If we could get, say, Bouchard to play RD1 via a trade, that would leave Hanifin/Hronek on the second pair and I can't say that I really hate that. I know we want to get younger, but they're still good and Bouillon can learn from them as LD3 next year. Especially that they have term, I think we can wait another year on the second pair. I saw K'Andre Miller on the block from NYR which is tempting, though. Either way, we want to continue drafting defensemen. And roger that on DeSmith.
      Now, for the draft, no one from picks 1-9 have their pick on the block. However, if we were to trade into the top 3/5, it seems as though pick #10 + a 1st next year (or maybe a 2nd & two 3rds) and a player with some value like Hamilton would get it done. It's a high price to pay, but an 80-82 OVR MED Elite forward would go a long way on this team. Aside from that, I agree that we can use the excess picks to get value for the 3rd pair D, bottom 6, prospects, etc. I'll pin the prospects who you mentioned.
      For who you mentioned in FA..
      Heiskanen: likely won't drop as DAL has lots of cap space
      Bouchard: could be acquired for a couple of 3rds so that we don't need to risk it + no July 1st competition.
      Svechkov: very interesting to me. 26yo 86 OVR UFA, 49 points in 61 games two years ago, 3 points in 18 games last year. 4.5* defense with 88 faceoffs.
      Perfetti, Evangelista, & Pelletier: also interesting.
      The most difficult thing to predict is prospect growth. If O'Brien is 83/84 OVR next year, then he would probably be our LW3/LW2 and we wouldn't need a Perfetti/Evangelista/Pelletier. So many ways it could go, BUT, if we were to trade up and draft Lundqvist AND IF he was 80-82 OVR AND IF we traded for Bouchard's rights AND IF O'Brien & co. saw growth, our lineup might be..
      Raty-EP40-Tippett
      Lundqvist-Norris-Lekkerimaki
      O'Brien-Goldmann-Podkolzin
      Johnston?-Klimovich?-Niskala?
      Extra: Musty?
      Hughes-Bouchard
      Hanifin-Hronek
      Bouillon-X
      Jones
      X/Janssen?
      This was definitely a long one haha and I won't be recording until tomorrow so take your time and let me know your thoughts! Much love buddy, talk soon

      Hi bud,
      That could be a decent lineup that gets us to the playoffs but I feel we'd still be missing something upfront. We probably need someone who can be a point per game player alongside EP but I'm not sure that Raty or Tippett can be that guy. We can probably have one of the 2 on that line but we probably need to upgrade on one of them if we want to get back to be contenders.
      It's also quite bias as I'm not a big fan of the player but I'm not sold on Norris being a solution as 2C. I really do not see us making it if EP gets injured and Norris becomes our 1C. In a perfect world, he'd be our 3C but, considering how much we're paying him, it wouldn't make much sense.
      I totally get what you're saying about possible prospect growth and maybe we arrive at the start of the season and some of them grow so much that it's mostly problem solved but it's a big risk to take, especially considering how some of them haven't grown much in the last couple of years. I'm not a fan of this as it can feel like trying to cheeze the system but maybe so sign a couple of guys if they drop to UFA and, if our prospects surprise us, we trade the signed UFAs for a swap of 7th and pretend we never signed them? I feels like cheating just to say it but, hey, I'm Cheating Heel so that's kind of my game. 😂
      With the amount of picks we have, trading to get the rights to Bouchard could be a good move. As you mentionned, getting in the top 5 could be very costly if we need to do Hamilton + 1st + 2nd + couple of picks but it might be worth it within a couple of years so I'd be ok with it. Not sure I'd do two 1st though as there's a fair chance we can be near the bottom again next year. It's kind of a shame the EA hasn't incorporated picks protection to the trades but I'm somewhat not surprised.
      Svechkov would be a beast on the pk with those stats and has very decent production. Unless he wants crazy money, I'd try to get him for sure; that's very interesting.
      If we move on from some of our forward prospects, I'd look into swapping some for def prospects, especially if we go for a top forward by moving in the top 5. That would help address 2 issues right away.
      Can't wait to see what you have in store for us! Offseasons are the best part of franchise mode (apart from winning championships). Very excited for the next episode!

    1:04:54 Fire the expensive $7million coach. Need to go all in to get the Top 6 better for next season. Perhaps trading away picks to get players and reload for another cup run.
    If choosing rebuild then move up for one of the NHL Ready or 1 year away players.

      Thanks Joseph! For sure, improving the top 6 will be a major priority. If the right players are available, then our plethora of picks will be helpful. I think we can draft high AND pick up top talent! And no worries about the coach, he could make $700M and it wouldn't change anything with owner mode turned off

      BIG celebrations in Vancouver! Now if only he could simulate as well as he plays in the real world!
