I was literally typing up a comment along the lines of "Ryan is what I've always wanted on this show because I feel like he truly represents me," when I saw yours. I'm so glad it's a shared feeling.

I love how Ryan is encouraging, guiding, and supporting Kwesi through this, it's so wholesome and it reminds me of when I taught my partner to cook and bake (he's now really improved and is a genuinely good cook), just such a fucking sweetheart!
His theatre background may have influenced him to research it like a method actor would a role

Everyone's talking about Ryan but can we talk about how Valerie took this as an opportunity to act like she was in her own little baking show? Literally everytime it cut to her baking I felt like I was watching one of those feel good baking/cooking shows. I love her.

For the first half of the episode, it showed that Ryan had watched and managed to memorize the right parts of previous Without a Recipe. Then he decided to try to make caramel, and it became obvious that another part of him had watched and memorized all the wrong things of previous Without a Recipe. It was performance art. The Duality of Man!

One critique: I wish the camera would capture more wide shots of all the judges and not always jump to one person. Sometimes I want to see everyone’s reaction to a thing.
But this episode was so entertaining, love this combination of people.
the chef has such camera presence in the demonstration scenes, loved her!

"We are suppose to be amateurs" - Kwesi. Keith went running around talking to chefs to learn things and Ryan watched every episode. Kwesi who has been on this show forgot tablespoon was a measurement. I love how crazy this show is.

I love Ryan for not falling into the classic WAR trap of assuming the other contestant(s) know what they're talking about. It took him two seconds to realize "Wait, Kwesi probably doesn't actually know how to make caramel, either" and it's amazing.

Former Girl Scout employee here! Fun episode!
Fun facts for you: I do always find it funny when consistency is mentioned, because the Girl Scouts actually use two different National bakeries to bake and distribute the cookies (due to volume and then your bakery is based on region). You can tell which bakery you have based on the names of the cookies. They are SUPPOSED to be the same cookie, but they weren’t consistent enough between the two bakeries so they had to change the names for half the cookies. A Samoa for you is a Caramel Delight for us. They look a tiny bit different too. Aka - each cookie has two different versions of itself and you can differentiate by name! ABC bakery is considered the best tasting (in blind tests) between the two, with Little Brownie Bakery being the other, but an average consumer doesn’t even know there are different versions of each cookie. And now you know!
Keith could try all the different cookies! See which ones taste better? It’ll be the ABC bakery 😊
I agree on the ABC cookies tasting better! I worked for a council that used ABC, and I def prefer their Thin Mints. My understanding on the different names is that it’s Little Brownie Bakers who holds the copyrights, instead of GSUSA. The only name they couldn’t copyright was Thin Mints, because it’s descriptive. Does the staff in your council also get the cookies from damaged cases, because they have to damage out the whole case? Because that was the best. I’d get like 4 boxes of Thin Mints and put them in my freezer.
@@melaniemagolan2241 It's a trademark, not a copyright, and I think actually the reason for Thin Mints is just that they're the only cookies that predate the dual-baker geographic arrangement. They *are* trademarked now, but only since 2011, and by GSUSA, not by either bakery.
Pretty sure I grew up near the good bakery and then moved and my kid got the other bakery. Because NONE of the cookies tastes right to me. And they weren’t as good. ❤
A funny but opposite situation in Australia is that our national biscuit company Arnott’s makes 3 different versions of its Gingernut Biscuits depending on which state you’re in. Same name, different biscuits. When they went national each area was used to the recipe that was being made locally so they kept them to appease customers

I absolutely adore Joyce, she is so joyful and excited. You can tell she loves baking and believes everyone can do it and thats why she was disappointed in them so quickly lol
The reason you shouldn't eat raw cookie dough is eggs, yes, but ALSO raw flour. Important to remember even when you bake something without egg, flour can also carry salmonella.

Flour is actually more dangerous. In eggs, salmonella is really only a concern if you get SHELL in the food. The SHELL holds the bacteria- hence why we pasturize eggs before shipment, but obviously, ish happens from farm to table.
If I recall correctly, you're more likely to get salmonella from raw flour than you are from raw eggs! Because to get it from raw eggs, you have to have an egg from a chicken that carries salmonella, and not every chicken carries it. Most don't. Flour, however, is easily contaminated.
So wild to me that such a developed country has a problem with salmonella 🤔
