    You should shoot some super slow mo of that AK at various different gas positions. Would be interesting to see how far the bolt comes back and how hard it impacts the back of the action at different gas settings.

      Always a good idea. Some cars though... Holy shit. I've seen cars where the engine needed to be pulled of the mounts to access the alternator I'm not a mechanic so in that case I'm paying someone to do that, someone who's work is guaranteed. Seems pretty evil to put an alternator in that location I hope there's a solid engineering reason for that. Also if your engine design has a horizontally mounted oil filter: fuck you.

    As a lefty using a stock Swedish AK4 in service, the absolute most annoying things are the sling attachements which make the rifle want to hang upside down on its own. It makes it impossible to carry around regularily without some customisation. I have never considered safety or charging handle unwieldy. Using left eye for aiming means the right side of your face gets blasted with gases and residue from the ejection port which can get irritating (especially when shooting blanks).

    I've built an AK not dissimilar to yours, Karl, but in 7.63x39. I added the Russian rubber buttpad to increase LoP. Haven't added optics yet but I'm probably going to go with an attero arms mount with a micro reflex. The 7.62x39 with a tiny triangle buttplate was pretty harsh, so I put a VG6 Epsilon AK, and a KNS piston into it and oh my Lord, what a difference. Can't recommend the KNS piston enough. So good.

    I wonder if the gas system detuned itself some how under fire. Just strange that it would work so well and than all of a sudden be under gassed. I'd recommend getting a paint market and marking it once you set it to verify if it moved at all during shooting. If you notice the short stroking got worse the more you shot.

    I've seen a lot of problematic quad stack mags, so my question is are they any good? I get their intended purpose, but I'm not well versed with firearms enough to understand the root of the problems, could you make a realiable quad stack mag if you for instance designed a weapon from the ground up to support quad stack mags? Or are they just cursed to not work no matter what you do?

    I'm really looking forward to the WWKD series. The rifle I have in mind is basically (an abuse of terms) an AKM-74S, but in 7.62 for undisputed logistic are ballistic benefits over here on the coast. The complex mechanical stuff I'll figure out on my own, but the accessories and sling choice (what sling, where to mount, how to wear) I'll definitely take from you guys.

    • @riverstyxarmory9782
      @riverstyxarmory9782 6 років тому

      GunFun ZS find someone who would dispute the ballistic and logistic benefit of 7.62x39mm M43 ammunition over 5.45x39mm ammunition. Go ahead, I'll wait.

    • @riverstyxarmory9782
      @riverstyxarmory9782 6 років тому

      GunFun ZS that's why I'm choosing 7.62. if everything was equal logistically if choose 5.45. the lesser barrier penn and greater disturbance from hitting things like tree branches would be justified by it's better terminal ballistics. And yes, I believe that something "ballistic" (although you don't specify which one) is undisputed by anyone reasonably minded. M43 and 7N6 don't change. Those are controlled variables. The standards are set. Physics had not changed since the inception of either cartridge, so any tests and sounds reasoning holds true to this day.

    I can say the TWS dog leg setup is impressively effective and is lighter than a side rail option, I don't know specifically by how much but it takes a steel leaf sight, spring, elevation adjustment knob, dust cover and replaces it with about the same volume material aluminum thats also minus the entire side rail assembly especially if your rifle doesn't come with one (like my ras47).

Those KNS adjustable gas pistons are great, but I could tell from the ejection that Karl's gun had too much bypass. I'm running one in a 5.45 VEPR and the proper setup throws spent cases 2-3 meters. Could a temperature difference have made your gas system fail you like that? I've never played around with the gas system on a firearm before, but what happened to you reminds me of setting the jets on a carburetor (used to pit crew races) you can set them up and have the engine running real strong, but let the air temp be off a few degrees or have it be a little different humidity and the whole system won't work right.

    Man, as soon as I saw the AK's bolt carrier just BARELY making it back far enough to cycle I knew it was going to be a problem. But, like Ian said, this is why this sort of trial and error is important - exposing the problems before you really need the gun to be running at 100%. Karl's not to blame here, just Murphy pulling his little tricks.

    Went on overseas training in germany when I was in the army many years ago. Got a silver Schützenschnur just so you know I know what I'm talking about (one pistol miss kept me from the gold). 1 - G3 is indestructible in the field until you lose one of the non-captive retaining pins. I know, how the fuck do you lose the pins between pulling them out of the receiver and putting them in the buttstock? Well, grunts find a way. 2 - slapping up on the mag during loading is not in the manual of arms. Ian did a fantastic job of keeping that out of the process. He would have kept a german sergeant from yelling at him. They hate that for some reason. 3 - Ian did a great job handling the recoil impulse as well. The G3 is fairly unforgiving. But a workhorse nonetheless

    I've always wondered why everyone locks the bolt back before reloading their HK style weapons. Seemed like a waste of time to me. I've been running a PTR91 GI for several years and never had an issue in any position reloading on a closed bolt and running the charging handle as I would on an AK. Mag seats easily with just a little extra pressure (less effort than seating a loaded glock mag on a closed slide). Nothing aggressive. It charges with what feels like no added effort. My reload times are comparable to my AK's. Here you guys are (the firearms mythbusters) saying it's something you can't do practically. What's the deal? Is it my gun? It this open bolt thing actually a myth and something you guys need to test? Is it my large stature making things easier through added muscle and leverage?

      @skogib4846 6 років тому +5

      Yeah, my PTR91 was the same way. I think PTR has figured out some way to tweak it to make it better, but in general it's found that G3 require a lot of pressure on the magazine to seat on a closed bolt.

      They mostly do it because the HK slap looks so cool.

    • @TheBrackishCoast
      @TheBrackishCoast 6 років тому +1

      Skogi Brevik mine doesn't seem to require any additional pressure than loading an AR or Glock with the action closed. I actually think it takes less effort than an AR. Locks up easily. A quick push-in till it bottoms on the tabs, followed by a quick pull-out and I know it's seated and I then charge it. I'm running HK marked GI mags from the mid 60's to late 80's. Most were in great shape when I got them. Of course my rifle is a sample of 1. Maybe PTR figured some shit out? Maybe I got lucky with this rifle? Just never had this issue nor understood why others added that additional step.

    For a light, you could use the RS BM-1 on that AK. Barrel mount, no need to deal with hand guard mounting points, and super light.

    Two immediate things I foresee leaving Karl's gun: the magazine and the bi-pod. This is just knee jerk, but when I heard "Revisiting the Bi-pod" I heard "Return/Revenge of the good idea fairy". Of course, this is the reason you do the Beta testing.

    A tacticool but at the same time nice and clean AK, even Ivan Chesnokov couldn't get worked up about it. Dem malfunctions doe... Going with a stiffer spring or a buffer insert would be my first choice before fiddling with the gas block.
    That G3 is also a beauty.

    I could see MK making a 3kg AK with stamped 2mm g5 titanium receiver on that 6mm universal cartridge they were developing in the 80s. I mention titanium due to the massive soviet titanium industry and its use in military projects, from all titanium submarines to body armor. I honestly believe that they would do something like that, but not necessarily to make it that much lighter, but rather more rigid, durable and rust proof in marine conditions. (if the soviet union hadnt collapsed that is)
