  • 📅 30th March - Welcome to the 8th episode of #PotToPickle: How To Grow Climbing Peas Or Beans Up a Bamboo Wigwam In A Pot 🌱 #PotToPickle is a series of grow-a-long back-to-basics video tutorials for the novice urban vegetable grower. We'll be doing everything together this season, and growing everything in pots. I'll be showing you that no matter how small your outside space, you can still grow a decent amount of veg 🎉

In Episode 8 I show you how to grow climbing peas or beans up a bamboo wigwam, in a large pot. I take you through the entire process, from constructing the wigwam, to sowing the seeds, to planting out the young plants.
Growing peas and beans vertically is such a great way to get the maximum harvest from your space. Plus a bamboo wigwam covered in flowering and fruiting plants looks so beautiful later in the season, adding height and structure to your outside space! 🌸
Questions I answer in this video include:
🌟 When to sow climbing peas or beans (v. important!) 1:18
🌟 Why you should grow climbing peas / beans as opposed to dwarf compact types 4:06
🌟 How to construct a bamboo wigwam in a pot 5:23
🌟 How to sow climbing peas and beans in cardboard toilet roll tubes 8:40
🌟 How and when to plant out climbing peas and beans, including the very important hardening off process 13:38
🌟 How to look after these plants once they’ve been planted outside 20:58
In the next tutorial I will show you how to sow the rest of our flowering veg - hooray! These include the beans, courgettes, cucumbers and summer squash suitable for pots, such as patty pans. You will sow these from the middle of April at the absolute earliest - do wait for the tutorial, there is no rush.
You guys are doing so well so far and I hope you are proud of how far you’ve all come. I certainly am. There’s still so much joy to come 🤗

We just found your channel and have really enjoyed it. So we bought some seeds but realised we should have started in Feb. So we bought some tomato, peppers and lettuce plants but not sure about planting them out side - HELP. The plants we bought were already outside at a garden centre so assume we can put in big pots on our sunny area outside? Grateful for any help.

Sorry Geoff, just realised you said you have bought young tomato and pepper plants. That's great! I would continue to grow them on inside on your windowsill (watch Episode 6 at 17 mins onwards for how to look after them on your windowsill). Then we'll harden them off (there will be a tutorial) and then finally plant them out (there will be another tutorial!) But it's too cold to be leaving them outside right now, perhaps only for a couple of hours in the height of midday sun on warm days. We are experiencing unseaonsably cold temps at the moment which is delaying everything a bit!

@@LeylaKazim thank you so much for responding so quickly - much appreciated. OK we will keep them inside for now. We also got some young beans and lettuce plants, so assume they should also be inside.
