0:29 you can here ss traffic’s second whistle
Yeah!!
This is Southampton not Cherbourg. Traffic operated her whole life in Cherbourg.
It doesn’t matter what a ships whistle sounds like
0:23-0:49 The SS Bremen Horn!!!!!!!!!
For some reason I refuse the believe these are the ship’s actual whistle blowing
Her screws are all chipped, indeed needed repair.
They had bulb noses whereas the two Cunard "Queens" did not. The most advanced liner of the 1930s was then the French "Normandie". At first the "Bremen" and "Europa" had lower funnels to reduce air resistance and make them look more "sleek", but the upper decks were soon covered in soot and when "Europa" arrived in New York after her first record-breaking voyage her lifeboots were almost black. The funnels had to be redesigned as you can see in this video. Both ships did not make the Norddeutscher Lloyd any profit. At first there was the era of the big depression, then came the Nazis and with them international travellers felt unwell on German ships and Germans were banned from spending money abroad, which drastically reduced German travel activity.
How cool! My great grandparents moved to America on this ship. Thank you for sharing!
