I had a go 2 years ago. Was 3rd row back in quali, thinking "I got this, what could possibly go wrong"..... Got tangled with someone else and by the time we'd picked ourselves up we were plumb last away from the start. My bars were twisted roughly 20 degrees and I was reaching for the multi tool when the red mist descended. I set off and passed 107 people to finish 43rd, missing the main race by 8...... Not bad for a 45 year old......
So if you don't place top 35 you're out of luck and don't get to even try the main race for fun like after the actual race happens? Also that is really impressive how you worked your way back up from the fall. You think you'll ever try it again?
Naaa, it means you line up at the front on the second race. Taking place the day after... 👍 👍 👍 Don't think ill try again, the whole trip cost 1k!!!. For me it was just a pleasure having a go 👍 👍
I know the trick : you just know someone who knows someone who can get you on the first 2 rows. Then, hold your spot. Qualifying when you start beyond the 4th row is tricky. Problem, if you don't qualify well, is you start in the middle of the pack on race day. I prefer to aim for front row start of saturday's race. It's way more fun.
That's what i thought. What's the point in even starting with such a bad spot. Of course you can have luck that the first rows fuck up but come on. Those guys arent there to play either. There should be a rule or something for those with a bad starting spot. Or do they take the "round" time for each one?
I guess it depends what is your goal, but starting beyond Fourth row makes it very difficult. Ben is still young compared to me (I'm 49) and a much more experienced rider (I started mtb 4 years ago). It feels better to me when I target front row of saturday's race, instead of shitty qualifying in sunday's Mega.
I so nearly came off at that same right hander. It was my first MegA, aged 63, and the quali race was brutal. I am still hurting 5 days later after 4 crashes. So battered I could not do the main event so I will just have to come back another year #mega1845
Peter Hayes Good man! 63? Holy crepe! I'm 66 and just bought a fat bike last year. It's an absolute hoot to ride, so I'll be back out on the local trails as soon as this lockdown unlocks!!!!!!!
yeah well pinkbike was cool.. untill it went PC.. one "wrong" comment and you are suspended.. the mods are worse than the nazi's.. now days its just a big page of commercials.. i stopped mtb\dh when 27.5 came around for sales and bleeding wallets.. the sport really took a headshot..
pro bikes go for around 4k to 6k, e-bike versions go even higher but i'm unsure about regulations for tournaments on those, probably not allowed though i got my full carbon fiber full suspension bike for a healthy 3.5k new
@Nick Maclachlan That is absolutely correct. I said minimum 2000 to be able to get to the goal. I wouldn't even try this track with a bike less than that.
Such a cool idea and incredible event! Love the GoPro footage of this event too. Sadly, it's really lame these guys gotta wait in lines that long just to get a qualifying run.
Idk, this race and the way the qualifiers work seem like bs to me. Someone who came 36th in their set could do better than someone who came 35th in another set, but they wouldn't qualify because they came 36th. Also, starting so far back is a HUGE disadvantage. Having multiple rows like that wouldn't be a problem in such a long race if the racing paths were really wide; but they're not. For a large portion of the race, the path is barely big enough for 1 person. Seems like terrible design.
If the paths were wide they would be much easier to do. I think the qualifiers should be based on time. Instead of releasing multiple rows of people, they should make a row and send it after 2min or so behind the other row and in the end they would see the time it took for you to do it. Then have the best times go on the main race.
John is right, this race isn't just about having a fast time, it's about dealing with the chaos from start to finish. The courses are a mess so finding places to pass people is half the fun...
I'm confused. So the day before the official Megavalanche, you have to race this gnarly race (that looks super tiring and dangerous) , and then place in it, so you can even get a chance to actually ride in the Megavalanche the following day? If anybody knows the real breakdown of this, i would love to know. Thanks guys.
Wait, that sounds misleading on my part. With 4k euros, you could probably buy a relatively cheap bike and some gear, get to France, purchase a starting place and spend the weekend racing. A starting place with an 8-9 day liftpass will cost you 118€. Depending on where you come from, you might exceed the 4k or not.
Whoever is alive at the end of the race gets to start in Megavalanche?
No, whoever is the least dead qualifies.
Basically lol
🤣🤣🤣
@@emeryshurpit8656 so, whoever can walk and talk at the end?
What so they can die there? That one is like 10x crazier

god damn. you gotta give it another try man!
Great job mate ! Don’t give up
Dude, I just started riding MTB and I'm 38... Jump back in!

I would like to go to France one day, it is full of French people though
LMAO
😂😂😂
Yeah, that's like the one downside of France.
Go to paris. Its conerted into a muslim city instead. Not many french people left there.
Wut
I know nothing about the extreme biking world. But merely looking at how rugged those bikes are...I assume that they must cost a whole lotta $$$
@Andrewggah jup.. excluding parts and tools..
excluding what they spend on food and exercise and maintenance
you can go up to about 9000€ if you want...
@@p__jay Can only imagine how much face trucks cost.
@Andrewggah As an expert, that is actually very accurate.

Tough enough at any age, well done at 63! Keep it up my friend.
Respect for participating though mate.
david bryan it was a 107 euros and that included a 5 day lift pass. 😊
Good on ya old timer …… maybe there's hope for this 50 something!
Peter Hayes

Deaks with the cheeky French line @ 5:48 haha
FlyingMeta :DDDD went to comment section to see if someone else saw this :DDDD
New favorite channel. Holy Crap!!! I raced BMX as a youth. Wish I stuck with it and did crazy crap like this.

Took that crash like a champ!! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
It hurt just glad my forks didn’t get smashed!
It looked very painful.
Yikes seemed like your head was a foot away from hitting that large boulder on the fall.
crashin? ain't nobody got time for that!
lmao
Football players do! 😂
Beautiful mayhem!
Dude , you kicked ass in that race!
You stayed away from the chaos this time, and showed some major skills and endurance.
Good going and good riding.
Nuts, especially with the fog everywhere. I don't think I go that fast in my car. Love it!
Totally motivated to really give the Mountain Bike life a shot!!
not just the parcour itsself, but doing it with so many at once all in the way, just mental. looks cool ofcourse.
That's some pretty gnarly downhill. Nice recovery from the off. Could have been far worse. OIOI indeed.
Great riding man, awesome to watch, go kick some ass in the race!! Oi oi! 😁
6:36 you are one tough bastard
Jesus...I started cheering for myself for finishing. Then I realized I wasn't in the race. That shit looks EXHAUSTING!!!
“bloody hard” ? You downhill dudes have great cardio fitness - and upper body strength. Job well done. That was fun to watch!
it's a dream to participate in this kind of a tourny enjoy the life to it's fullest while you can . really enjoyed the video
This looks so fun!! Thanks for sharing and hell of a ride! 👏👏
Bloody hell! what was in those gummy worms hahahaha!
that was probably not sugar coating on them XD
I was spinning to your ride. Yes, that looked like a work out!
I'm too old for this. Looks fun.
My heart is pumping just watching it awsome man
Those bikes must be built as tough as the riders! How much does a professional mountain bike cost, out of curiosity?
For a trail like that I would invest minimum 2000€ in a full suspension bike.
Some in that race may go up to 6k USD. I dunno from what price range they could be considered pro bikes, as I ride lower tier stuff.
pro bikes go for around 4k to 6k, e-bike versions go even higher but i'm unsure about regulations for tournaments on those, probably not allowed though

Even 8k usd bikes r common, ive seen people use 15k usd bikes too
It is so cool / weird to see the mountains out of ski season.
So glad you didn’t put music in the video the bike on the trail is the music
#OIOI 🤘💥💥
OIOI
I screamed at 6:40.
lmao i love how quickly excitement turns to fear and concentration
That cut at 5:56 was smooth. Quick thinking buddy
Wow I felt that fall. As if I had relived one of my own bike falls.
Alpes d'Huez :) Recognized the place at the first glance
tshirts and shorts are just enough!
Looks like new trend of reverse thrust as breaking in case disk brakes go nuts😎 @0:50
That was intense. Nice riding.
nice mate so bummed you took that fall, fricking rooting all the way i was, that was a vid
that short line !! BOOM !! Oi Oiiiiiiiiii !!!!
0:57 can somebody please tell me what that is?
Henry McNaughton looks like some sort of co2 canister for the back shock
Thanks
Could not of said it better myself dave. Put it this way there’s no way that shock is going to bottom out
Pretty sure that's where he stores the fuel cells needed to make the jump to hyperspace.
Such a good comment, cracked me up. 👏👏👏👏
Wish they got these types of bike race in my country
Such a cool idea and incredible event! Love the GoPro footage of this event too. Sadly, it's really lame these guys gotta wait in lines that long just to get a qualifying run.
I have the same problem with rosbeef, sorry with England !
Watched this one and the megalanche 2018 video dude is funny and a good sportsman. New subscriber
100 % ADRENALINA !, greetings from Bolivia.
That was insane. Awesome run Deaks.
What are the bike specifications? Requirements? Can you ride any bike you like?
Great vibes from the songs

Yeah, maybe next years they change it.

@@ChrisRoderickmtb So you are basically saying that the people behind start with a huge handicap ? How fair is this lol ?
That's... Urm... Mega! Nice vid man...
Man mega looks so sick, love to do it one day
lots of sick bikes, lots of quality
I tried this on a hard tail and immediately got a puncture lol
You were probably running too low pressure and/or a tire with shit quality casing
Should of had sealant
DUDE THAT FALL LOOKED GNARLY
why has megavanche only just become popular? it's amazing.
at 421 the guy next to ya is like HELL nah when he sees that gnarly rock sections
Looks like a course for a long travel plus bike!
6:38 scared the hell out of me!
Umm why
That's so sick!! 🤘
That looks sick.
Thank goodness it wasn't too cold.
Well done mate.
Nice video! It's a shame that the camera looks like it is focusing too much to the ground

What's the total cost of joining plus own trips expenses..?
Eddy Arifin about 4k euros
Thanks for the tips
Bike not included, you should add
Ohh i see...behind the scenes expenses

Yes Deaks send it!!
i see they are all using quite slim tires for that type of terrain, is that to save weight?
Love your vids
How is called that starting sound? I love it ahah
Balls of steel
Great racing
wow...this is crazingly amazingliling linglingly crazy!.....
This is the Edson mountain biking!
*Heavily breathing*
You really Wile Coyote that bike! Lol.. awesome footage. Liked, sub and commented. Keep up the good work.
Im from Perú and Wow nice my friend :)
Is the qualifier the same distance as the main event? I'd love it to do it, but it'd take me all day and I'd be hiking half of it!
No it's a bit shorter, less uphill :)
Great footage, nice riding. Camera is set a bit low, though.
Gotta love it when the camera frame rate is too low to be able to follow along when you're going fast XD
Deakinator!
For the first time in my life I have in the top 100 likes of a pinkbike video
Congrats 👏
Who was appearing on 0:50 (I didn’t understand the whole name) and what on earth was his machine? Looks cool! 😎
That’s lovely. You ate shit. Now you’re riding with a twisted seat & one working brake lever. Bwahaha. Good job mate. Stay safe.
Anxiety levels +1000000
Thats crazy man! I want to do that! I’ll be last for sure lol
do you have to hit certain checkpoints or couldn't you cut straight at 7:58?
Sick ride!!!!
I don't know why I found it funny when he said any body wants some sweets
1:15 is wholsesome content.
how did you know about that line at 5:50?
gilly0228 he has problaby risen the track alot
whats the least tire width to recommend on this track? 2.5 min?
This is a different layout from the race one right?
Insane. Nothing more to say.
your speed is mindblowingly fast
So cool!
