    Play with the ratios of Drambuie to scotch to achieve your level of sweetness. 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 1:4...what do you like?

      Perhaps the Vet's blood sugar level was dangerously low and he only seemed inebriated. Hence the need for a sweet drink like a good Nail. /barstoollawyer

    I live in Fife Scotland and was born in Aberdeen, I have been drinking Drambuie since I was 18 at on officers night out when I was in the Boys Brigade and fell in love with it. It was served with crushed ice and that feeling as it goes down the hits your stomach with a warm glow that no other drink can do, not long after I started drinking rusty nails and also malt whiskys, I am now 67 and malt whisky is still my top drink. Having been to a good few highland distilleries by the time I was 30 I have done away with the ice and only use a blend to mix with Drambuie at a 50-50 blend as it is a shame in my opinion to use a single malt. My fiend at the time when I started drinking whisky worked in Haig's of Markinch as a blender told me that most people who drink whisky and claim to be able to tell the difference can't really after a few drams as the way whisky acts on the taste buds with the exception of the strong peaty west coast bottles. Anyway to me it does not matter how you drink "the water of life" as long as you enjoy it. Slàinte Mhath (Pronounced Slanj-a-va) or cheers.

    Drambuie has always been a favorite of my Dad.... a "half bottle" would last him 12 months....(he's never been a drinker!)
    But he's 94 now.... I bought him a full-size bottle a year or so back.... I reckon it'll last him until his centenary!
    Rusty nail was a favourite of my late wife...... RIP Darling.
    Thanks for the memories.

      Hope he's still drinking it mate. My dad used to call Drambuie water of life. He was wrong unfortunately. The translation in celtic and gaelic is Uisge beatha, considering that at the time in Gaelic a b was pronounced as a c. you can see where this analogy came from. Apparently it's the whiskey that's the water of life. Doesn't make much odds with me,,, I will drink either gladly

    I have a Drambuie story: when I was a young buck, I cared only about beer and vodka, because why would I care about any other booze. I had a house party one night, and a friend brought Drambuie, and told me it was Scotch. I had no desire to try it, until a long while later, late, with nothing else to drink, I drank my first glass of "scotch". Wow, was it good, now I knew why everybody "sophisticated" drank this, im now a Scotch drinker. That was until the next week, we went out to a club, I ordered a Scotch, neat. Wheeww boy!

      My first introduction to Scotch was on a business trip to Edinburg Scotland (yeah... not a bad place for a business trip). So I had my wife come out for an extra week and we tried the Whiskey Experience at the top of the Royal Mile where they end with an opportunity to do tastings. I was generally good with most of them but my wife not so much. When it came to the Islay my wife wrote in her tasting note "So Bad. Everything bad. Burnt bad"... And the picture I got was priceless ;-)

    Just a small point - Monkey Shoulder is a Blended Malt (formerly known as a Vatted Malt) and therefore 100% Malt; rather than a Blended Scotch, which is a mixture of Malt and Grain whiskies.

    • @Veraxeon
      @Veraxeon 3 роки тому +3

      Different grains aren't a requirement for blended whisky right? Blended whisky is just different whiskies thrown together I believe. Which makes Monkey shoulder a Blended Scotch, but more specifically a blended/triple malt.

    • @jonathancole833
      @jonathancole833 3 роки тому +4

      @@Veraxeon Monkey Shoulder is certainly a Scotch, and it is blended: so yes, it can be described as a Blended Scotch.
      Its just that the term usually refers to a grain/malt blend, with the term Blended (or Vatted) Malt being a more specific description of a whisky like Monkey Shoulder.

    • @LaLiLuLeLoX
      @LaLiLuLeLoX 3 роки тому +2

      @@Veraxeon Malting is just a process in the making of a specific type of whiskey. I do believe you can malt any type of grain. Single malt whiskey is made using malted barley. Malt Scotch will usually refer to Single Malt whiskey made in Scotland. You can make a single malt whiskey anywhere in the world. So a Blended Malt Scotch Whiskey would mean a blending of only single malt whiskeys from different distilleries in Scotland.

    • @Veraxeon
      @Veraxeon 3 роки тому +3

      @@LaLiLuLeLoX Yes that's pretty much what I was trying to say

    • @LaLiLuLeLoX
      @LaLiLuLeLoX 3 роки тому +2

      @@Veraxeon I hear ya but your definitions were just a little bit off. Different grains ARE used to make whiskey. Different grains is whiskey. It starts to get specific depending on what type of whiskey you wanna create(Single Malt, bourbon, rye, corn whiskeys, etc). And blended would be defined as using whiskeys from multiple distilleries. I haven't heard of triple malt till just now. I looked it up and it refers to barrel ageing of unblended malt whiskey. Damn I just realized something. I've always thought the "single" in single malt referred to the fact that only malted barley is used but it refers to malted barley whiskey from a "single" distillery(aka unblended whiskey). SHIT!! haha...Silly me. It can get a bit confusing but yea I think all the crap I just said still makes sense!! hahaah

    My 90 year old father in law turned me on to Rusty Nails. Through trial and error, we have found that 2 parts scotch and 1 part Drambuie is just about right. We also experimented with different scotches and found the cheaper stuff like Dewer's White label with all of it's sharp edges does a pretty good job of mellowing the sweet of Drambuie.

    Thanks for introducing me to this wonderful drink. Love the old man story...if everybody else knew him, why didn't anyone warn you?! Cheers.

    During Vietnam, a group of Forward Air Controllers with the Nail call sign were based in Thailand. (The mission they flew was extremely dangerous.) They named their bar the Nail Hole, and their official unit drink was...you guessed it. So there are still Colonels today ordering that drink. I was never a Nail, but I was a FAC and a Lt. Colonel. I wrote two novels about being a FAC, and named my protagonist Rusty Naille.

    I grew up in the 60s born in 1950 …my grandpa and his golf buddies would sit and sip for hours on rusty nails …I always stole from their glasses …now my main drink since I retired 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️🤗

    I came across this drink, years ago, while attending bartending school. I too enjoy it especially during the winters months in Pennsylvania. As for the sweetness, I've found that it depends on my mood and the time of day, giving this simple drink more complexity.

    I bartend at a large tailgate before home games at a nearby college. We have a lot of booze stored and over the years we've ended up with some items which are no longer requested, including two bottles of Drambuie. Who ever drank Rusty Nails stopped coming to the games long before I was involved. I found your videos primarily by looking for a recipe/method on making a good Nail. You've got great content and I'm slowly working my way through all your videos. Congrats on your channel!!

    Ok I’m kind of addicted to your channel. Also, I LOVE Drambuie, it’s what got me interested in whisky (and drinking in general)

    I make cocktails all the time and thought the more complicated the better. After seeing your rusty nail. I love making them. I use rye or bourbon.

    It was over 6 years ago since I had an old Rusty. I’m more into old fashioneds these days. But this time of year is probably best to re visit this drink. Cheers

    I drink Drambuie neat. I have a sweet tooth. Drambuie was owned by the MacKinnon family for a hundred years, then was bought by William Grant & Sons in 2014. It has been produced under contract at the Morrison Bowmore Distillers facility at Springburn Bond, Glasgow, since 2010. There is a lot of discussion about the change in design of the original bottle, and the suspected change in recipe.

    orange oil is delicious with these, as there is orange in the drambuie I believe. Super good. Super classic

    I love a Rusty Nail. So many places don't know what it is or do not have Drambuie. Thanks for your video!
