As a kid, I always LOVED developing our woods (NH) in the '70s. Thinning, clearing and preparing for the spring run. Boiling in the spring was the only time I got to stay up all night. Such an adventure for a kid. I began to think of that wood as my own and loved doing the maintenance.

Really, the plans that you've shared are a good starting point, and whatever you choose will be good.
Remember, just because "Maple Season" is short that doesn't mean that there is only work being done on the farm during that time, leading up to tapping and winding down. I am sure that there is a lot going on with the farm all year long.

Your small batch concept is awesome and such a great way to get Owen involved and exposed to maple syruping. Going back many moons ago to 1980-81 in my vo-ag high school days we did some maple syrup making. We used plastic bags that were kinda shaped like a teardrop for collecting and they worked great. Don’t know if they even still make them. Love your son, he’s so cute and full of life! Cherish these moments with him, they grow up so fast!

As a bee keeper, I am a lover of sugar maples as they are one of the main early nectar sources in the spring. I've contemplated making syrup, but my one small trial was a mess. I tried the traditional little tin buckets that you see in the old idealized paintings of collecting sap....which is an unmitigated disaster if you keep bees, in that they love the sap and the buckets are anything but bee proof. I've contemplated just going with 5 gallon plastic buckets connected to the tap with a hose.....with a tight fit between hose and bucket. I'll be most interested in what arrangement you develop for yourself.

I'll be looking forward to other aspects of what goes on during the off season. My son taps only about 30 trees or so and I told him I had seen homemade R/O's and he thought I was nuts. So I bought the stuff to build one and he was really surprised how good it worked as was I. He went from boiling till early morning to being done before midnight most of the time. He's talking about adding more taps now that I've retired because I can get things started before he get home from work and hopefully be done at a reasonable time. You're little guy is a cute little guy, you'll be a great role model for him growing up.

I went with a board for the RO system So I could extend to 4 RO filters or just keep it at 2 filters. Then have a vacuum system to draw the finished syrup through the filters. Deciding on a boiler to use, storage by the boiler. Then what the pan will be on. Will it be cinder blocks with gravel filling it and a metal stack out the back or an old oil tank or a brick base. Then the building, tent, metal pole building or an Amish shed. Getting the tools together to make the syrup can be more interesting than making it. Then the decision-making process based on how much it costs. You could have a ton of video's this summer, fall and winter.

@@MapleFarmer there are tons of people that would love to see various things, like where to look to size things for the volume of sap per tap. I know Vermont agriculture has documents on that. Even plans for syrup houses. Show them where to look while doing it for yourself. It is one thing to show someone how to do something, but how to look up the data for themselves, well that is different.
