- The explosion and loss of life that day marked an abrupt end to the Golden Age of airship travel. The airship was the pride of Nazi Germany and burst into flames upon touching its mooring mast, in Lakehurst New Jersey. 35 passengers and crew members were killed, of 97 people aboard. Yet three-quarters of a century later, there is still no clear answer as to how the incident occurred.
Due to the scale and volume of the Hindenberg - along with the intricacies of its design no one has ever been able to provide a satisfactory explanation of how or why the disaster occurred, until now. We debate sabotage, mechanics, weather, and even passengers themselves.

Refresh my memory, didn't that documentary conclude that most likely cause of the explosion had to do with the paint? It's been a "minute" since I watched it 😊
@@GavinsMarineMom Anchor lines caused grounding, which allowed static electricity to arc across fabric to airframe, igniting a hydrogen leak. Ironically, the dope-covered fabric was separated from the airframe on purpose by a small gap, which actually caused the arcing.

With the spark? If a downpour was happening, would the gas mix with the rain droplets "coating" the outside of the ship? How much more would the air pressure be due to the storm? You did your experiment on a nice clear day, your test worked inside a shop, and the air pressure would be more, i think, just a question.

Ultimately the cause of the Hindenburg fire is moot, as the end of the rigid airship was brought by the enormous surface area of the hull, which kept airspeed low and made the craft uncontrollable if perpendicular (especially vertical) air currents were encountered. You'll note that all three helium-inflated rigid airships met a quick death from this cause, generally faring worse than their hydrogen-filled counterparts.
Curious if it’s really the most iconic air crash. When I thought of air crash, it’s the Tenerife disaster in 1977, when two Boeing 747s collided in a fateful accident. I’m just thinking out loud hehe :) Aviation/Air travel industry pls don’t harm me.
That wasn't an accident, the pilot was impatient and none of the crew could overrule his decision to leave.
It was a collection of bad luck and worse decisions.
And I have studied that crash... Now I know that Van Santen had an actual sane reason to wanting to leave. Not defending him, but for a long time, I thought it was him being merely pig-headed.

With the bomb the outer skin rippled just before the fire broke out like what eye whitnesses said
The cause is well known. Static electricity caused an arch and ignited the hydrogen. DISMISSED.

He's referring to the fact that some of the people, like Lau, were up inside the airship, while others - such as the passengers, and some of the crew - were in the gondolas attached to the bottom of airship. It's remarkable that Lau survived because he was not in one of the gondolas, he was inside the airship when the disaster began.

...I don't know, we lost 3, all of them using helium, not hydrogen, it would be cool, but I don't see anything bigger than the blimps we see today...there good at hovering , great for viewing, not in the brief moment we see something in jet airliner....

I still think a terrorist explosion could have been the most likely cause, considering the last theory could have accured on the last flights of the hindunburg, but didnt, so a sudden explosion would have been most likely caused by a charge by someone who hated germany.
if it were a bomb it could of happen in a similar way. Also yeah like germany def have enemies considering theres a swastika on it. But the way they said it makes alot of sense so i think its most likely happen the way they said.

U have to remember that it was the 1930s,Italy,Germany, Austria even before the Anschluss and Spain all were fascist. France had a big far right movement. Russia also wasn't democratic. In fact, there were only 2 big functioning democracies, USA and UK, the US was isolationist so yeah.

Timed? Remote control? No. The bomb was triggered by a float in the ballast tank= low level in the water tank means the ship is having trouble with stability. The IED was set to explode by a saboteur with access to the inside workings of the craft's flight controls and particularly the area where the ignition originated from. Or maybe some idiot working inside the engine room lit a cigarette- 'we're close enough to landing now, it's safe for me to go ahead and have a smoke...'- last thoughts of a dead guy... obviously new to his job.
P.S. Could have been struck by lightning from quite a considerable distance away- hence a blue flash was seen prior to the main blast.
