- Jordan's taking a look at DPS' permanent waxless base treatment - Phantom 2.0 - in this week's Piste Off TV. This one time base treatment will last the entire lifespan of your skis and will mean you never have to wax your skis again.
But does it really cut the mustard? Well, we've got over a year and a half worth of skiing on Phantom 2.0, so feel we can make a 'long term' review of the product. Check the video out to find out our verdict.

I have put Phantom on two snowboards in Nov 2020 - professionally done by a certified Phantom 2.0 shop. Early spring (march 2021) and it's as sticky as an unwaxed board. I used to believe the hype but it doesn't work and now I'm back tuning/waxing my board every few weeks. I'm never buying phantom again....it's a one time, SUPER expensive treatment and will last less than a few months.
Thanks for the heads-up, I was thinking of getting it
it's too bad yours wasn't put on right or more importantly roto brushed off correctly. When done right this base treatment works great.
Thanks man. Feels good now I didn't get that at REI when I dropped off my ski for binding mount
Can I stick it under a sunbed
A couple days ago I had the opportunity to judge the effectiveness of Phantom. My son and I skied together at Mt Snow, VT with temperature around 37-39. Snow was clumpy and wet all over. My son was using my older (2018) Black crows Camox which I had treated by a shop at Stowe with Phantom. I was using my 2021 DPS Wailer 100 which were NOT treated with Phantom but had just had the top of the line TUNE at the shop where I bought them. We switched skis a few times since we have the same boots. My son had not skied the DPS before and preferred the feel of the heavier resort type ski. I preferred the DPS but I skied them several times last year and I was used to the floaty and quick turning feel. What was amazing to both of us though is how sticky the Camox felt and how great my DPS were gliding on the wet snow. When the snow is really hard I can’t tell if Phantom helps or not, but when the snow is wet and spring like I think wax is much better. I have yet to ask the shop what wax was used but I will next time I am at Stowe. I won’t be spending the money for the phantom again eventhough I feel guilty dropping some nasty chemical in the snow every time I ski.
How is it going? Have you still not waxed since the video?
I have the Phantom on the Pagoda Lotus 124 (got it from factory). Skied about 20 days on them last season. It doesn't really work that well. IMO not worth it. If you are the kind of person that never waxes their skies, it might be useful. However, if you wax your skies a semi-regular basis the Phantom base will never be as good as wax. Even deodorant stick wax is better than the Phantom base
Interesting system, but what happens if you get a core shot or deep scratch that needs to be patched or filled with a ptex gun? Would you end up having to retreat the skis, or go back to waxing?
Also what is the temperature window that this treatment works best over? Presumably it’ll be less effective than a low temp wax when temps drop really low.
Hey man. You'll need to treat any core shot repairs, depending on how big they are.
You'll probably not notice a lack of glide after a little P-Tex fill in, but would maybe want to reapply the Phantom treatment to the area of a big patch job.
@@ActiveTravellerMagazine - Thanks, thought that might be the case. One more question, patches & especially ptex repairs are not going to be as porous as a good quality sintered base. Prob more like an extruded base. Does this treatment work with non-sintered materials?
You're right there. If I'm honest, I think the difference in glide will be so small with any P-Tex level of repairs that you'll not worry about it.
It's the patch sized jobs that will be most important. I'll ask DPS for clarification on this and get back to you ASAP.
@@ActiveTravellerMagazine - Thanks, much appreciated. As an off-pister I often hit hidden stones & roots below the snow, so base damage is a regular occurrence!
We got this back from the Phantom R&D manager:
"He’s right - ptex repairs will essentially be an extruded material (and therefore less porous) than original sintered bases. PHANTOM will still work, but not as efficiently.
For what it's worth, I think your thoughts about a small amount of base material not being on the skis due to a core shot will have almost no effect on the performance, unless it's a race situation where every tenth of a second counts."
Cant say I believe this as friction causes wear. I can see the eco friendly argument, but there are eco friendly waxes like purl wax.
Great video 😁
Cheers Floss!
