    Thanks for this review! I am super interested in this product. Do you have any idea how long this service would take if I brought it into your shop? E.g. could I drop it off in the morning and pick it up later that afternoon?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  5 років тому

      In theory, yes! It would, of course, depend on how busy we are, but the total application process and curing only takes about an hour and a half for a pair of skis if a tech is just focusing on that particular pair.

  • @Benzknees

    If you have a core shot to a pair of treated skis, what do you do? As I understand it ptex patches are extruded not sintered.
    Ditto with large gouges that you have to fill with a candle or ptex gun, where the repair material is not sintered?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 роки тому +1

      If it's a big repair, DPS recommends doing a "spot treatment" to the spot that you repaired. In our experience, that works really well.

    performance of this permanent wax when paired with touring skins?

    A couple days ago I had the opportunity to judge the effectiveness of Phantom. My son and I skied together at Mt Snow, VT with temperature around 37-39. Snow was clumpy and wet all over. My son was using my older (2018) Black crows Camox which I had treated by a shop at Stowe with Phantom. I was using my 2021 DPS Wailer 100 which were NOT treated with Phantom but had just had the top of the line TUNE at the shop where I bought them. We switched skis a few times since we have the same boots. My son had not skied the DPS before and preferred the feel of the heavier resort type ski. I preferred the DPS but I skied them several times last year and I was used to the floaty and quick turning feel. What was amazing to both of us though is how sticky the Camox felt and how great my DPS were gliding on the wet snow. When the snow is really hard I can’t tell if Phantom helps or not, but when the snow is wet and spring like I think wax is much better. I have yet to ask the shop what wax was used but I will next time I am at Stowe. I won’t be spending the money for the phantom again eventhough I feel guilty dropping some nasty chemical in the snow every time I ski.

  • @magoobro

    Anyone know how this works with doing a ptex repair? Does it effect how the ptex bonds with the base?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  3 роки тому

      No, the P-Tex will still bond just as well as with a non-treated base. The only issue is if it's a big repair, that spot won't have the Phantom application. DPS recommends a new cure if you have to do a major repair, but if it's just a small core shot or something like that, it'll bond well and you won't notice any difference in performance or glide.

    Hey Jeff, thanks for the review! How does the phantom work for terrain park applications? Does it glide well on boxes, rails, and other features?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  2 роки тому +1

      No issues with park features, in fact, it slightly hardens the base so there should be some durability positives to take as well.

    Does anyone know if you need to do something special to skis that come straight from the factory? I have a brand new pair of DPS Wailers and was wondering if you can just apply the phantom right to them (they recommend a base grind for skis with wax but I assume new ones don't have any)

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  3 роки тому +1

      When skis are coming straight from the factory, DPS recommends doing the Phantom cure right on the fresh base. That's what we do, that's what I've done with all my personal skis, and it works really well.

    • @noahpalmieri941
      @noahpalmieri941 3 роки тому

      @@SkiEssentials Awesome, really appreciate the response. In your experience, do you think its worth it to have it applied with a UV light box? I got the Phantom 2.0 for 60 dollars but REI still wants 45 bucks to apply it. Not sure if the sun would be reliably bright enough in the northeast this time of year for me to do it myself

      Hi Trevor! Phantom is an add-on for $150, although right now we're doing a $125 special. So, unless you talked to customer service, probably not. That said, how far away are you? We could potentially coordinate turning the shipment around, adding it, etc.

    Why wouldn’t it be done straight from factory? Sorry if I missed it if it were explained

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  5 років тому +3

      We've thought about that too, and we wouldn't be surprised if companies start offering this as an option, or just included, straight from the factory. I would say the biggest reason why we're not yet seeing it straight from the factory is because it's a brand new product. It likely would take some time, resources, etc to setup an entire factory for Phantom cures.

    interesting, you mentioned you can apply wax on top of this, so a summer storage coat wouldnt be a problem? would it even be necessary with this?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  5 років тому +1

      Part of the benefit of summer storage wax is that it's protecting your base from chips, dings, and other damage. Wax it, don't scrape, and you've got a protective layer. So, if you normally apply summer storage wax, I still would with a Phantom cured ski.

    How much does it soak into the ski base? Does grinding the base flat not affect it or does it depend on how aggressively the grinding is done?

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  5 років тому +1

      It fully saturates the base, so when you get a stone grind it's not having any effect on the performance of Phantom.

    If this really works, why dont ski manufacturers deliver their bases with DPS Phantom then? Would make a very unique selling point: waxless skis.
    But for some reason none of them deliver DPS Phantom, so there must be a huge downside to it.

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  Рік тому +2

      Hey Dave! I think it's something you will see in the future. Right now it's somewhat hard to scale. It's even hard for us to keep the necessary amount of chemicals in house and have enough curing stations to do all the skis we do, which is no where NEAR the scale of a major ski manufacturer. I can't even begin to imagine the process of trying to Phantom cure, say, every Volkl ski that was manufactured. It takes some time for the curing process to finish, so there's a significant time restraint, and you'd need to have a ton of different curing stations, or maybe like one giant curing station. Again, I do think you'll see it sometime in the future, but it will take time to figure out how to implement it on such a grand scale.

  • @miketorre16
    @miketorre16 4 роки тому

    well..not quite sold.. How can you prove that this will still be as good, as a fresh hot wax? Even years down the road after a lot of skiing with the Phantom on your skis. Besides, you cannot do this at home with your skis in the sun. 🤨
    Then they will come out with a newer version every year.
    I'll pass 😏

    • @SkiEssentials
      @SkiEssentials  4 роки тому

      It's not as good as a hot wax, no, but it lasts way longer, like infinitely longer. A lot of ski racers are using it basically as base prep more than anything. It gives you superior glide to your competitors once the hot wax wears out. That alone really speaks to me as a former alpine and nordic ski racer.
      The curing station definitely provides a better result than doing it outside in the sun, yes.
