I love the bit you talked about at the end about how focusing on damage taken can lead to learning the game slower. I remember the class/combo that really opened up my skill curve was Zealot with Axe/Fal, because I gave myself permission to only use mouse 1 and focus entirely on punishing enemy animations, confident I wouldn't die from mistakes.
