so true a very famous preacher in the 19th century once let a young preacher into his pulpit - he was full of confidence and somewhat baize - when he came out of the pulpit he was a wreck and the famous preacher said to him; " young man if you went into the pulpit as you came out you would have succeeded - -his sermon was a mess. A bit of nerves shows there is always room for improvement maestro. Keep playing maestro your audiences will not see your nerves only the result - superb.
Everything is a learning curve Matt and you are finding out all the nuances that go with performing live! Playing at Mass is a responsibility but when it's your recital it's you laid open! You have a wonderful future ahead of you and I sure support you. Take care 🤗
It good to be nervous, because it helps to give a better performance especially if performing on your own. I've always felt nervous before performing but once the nerves calm it makes the whole performance go better
Well done for speaking out & admitting you made mistakes! I am pleased you have realised what , what in fact is stage fright ! Embrace it ! It means you care ! Some slow deep breathing just before you go on helps ! All the best actors will tell you that they too get stage fright! It also keeps you grounded ! I don’t play but did as a child & wish l kept it up , but do Theatre & working with Shire horses in public! Well done !
As someone who has been a performing musician for 4o+ years, I get what you mean. It's a tough balance between feeling confident that you can play what you have to but at the same time you know you're going to do something that needs hyper focus at times.
Love you openness about your recent performance Matt. Although I was not a solo musical performer (I did play in groups), I used to deliver a considerable amount of public business speaking. When being trained for these events, I was taught that feeling nervous before a presentation is natural and part of your body's way of helping you do your best. The "stress hormones" (like adrenaline) that your body produces at times like these can actually help you focus and therefore as you said, being nervous can be a good thing. I also feel that it helps keep you grounded and not become complacent. Thanks
That was a lovely vlog Matt. I do know where you’re coming from, I used to be anxious when starting to play in public, I hated it when they used to throw tomatoes at me, the worst ones where in the tins 😵💫 I’d love to one of your concerts
So I just recently had a performance, I was singing with a group that I had never sang with, had to learn to sing Puccini’s Messa di Gloria entirely on my own, have a week of rehearsals and then perform. Any other time I am a nervous mess, like uneasy stomach, jitters, the sweaty palms and forehead, the works. This time there was absolutely none of that… an experience that had me sooo apprehensive was at such ease when I walked on to the stage and stayed that way the entire time. It was WILD, like you it was distracting. All I could focus on was how not-stressed I was. 😂 I blame it on the sinus cold I had going on. But absolutely agree with you- it is a disconcerting feeling. It’s like the anxiety is a companion that you are used to having, and when it isn’t there you’re looking around for it.
Matt its ok to be nervous i played trumpet for many years many solos in front of many people i took deep breaths i played in church many times i took the time to talk to the congregation about what i was performing with the organist stayed focused on them making them understand what i was performing let yourself loosen up your a great performer.
I have the same experience. I did not play music in public, but I was a teacher and trainer for some complex technical stuff. Having some kind of fear makes us both nervous and alert at the same time. (For instance to explain something wrong or play something not right.) The alert part helps to focus on things (like running away from the lion in the forest). But the nervousness part wastes some of our energy and makes us exhausted sooner. The key is to get the alert part (for focusing) without the nervousness part. This comes with confidence in the things you do. And then you are a professional.
Most performers get some nerves, this is normal and very useful to enable you to play your best. I always had some nerves before going on stage. After I had started the nerves passed slowly and I then enjoyed it all. Finishing the performance and coming of stage was a real high but there was also a bit of a downer after a few hours. It's a strange situation but you learn to live with it. James.
It gonna be better for you when you have done this for several years! It's good to be nervous but not to much! I have been performing on stage for about 38 years now! I started when I was 7 and back then I was very nervous but now I'm more tense and not so nervous! It's always good to be a little bit tense or nervous when you gonna perform but not to much!
We all get that. You have the right approach Matt, whatever you don’t allow yourself to be complacent as this is a recipe for disaster. You carry on as the phenomenal person / organist you are. I am in awe of your talent.
i was at your recital at fairfield halls and you did very well keep going, i like your pop music cd. ive got all your cds. so far.
Thank you 🙏

If you are not feeling nervous then there is something far wrong.
