Anna Murphy, hurdy-gurdy player for the Swiss folk/pagan metal band Eluveitie, talks about her instrument and demonstrates it backstage at their 4/25/10 show in NYC.
Nice! I've rarely seen a gurdy with 4 melody strings, though I can see why it can be useful if you play in a band. No need to retune the melody strings according to the song, just put on a different melody string when you need it :) It's incredible that she only had been playing for 3 months when she joined the band, she's really talented. Go Anna!
I was at Irving Plaza the day this was recorded. I went for Amon Amarth Twighlight of the Thunder God tour II and Eluveitie and holy grail opened for amon amarth. Hated holy grail...but i love eluveitie way more than amon amarth since that day. Their music also makes me think of home..although they are from Switzerland America is much different than Ireland.
The song at the end she is playing is "Andro" by Faun, a German pagan folk band. It is on their Licht album, but they have "Andro II" on their newest album Von den Elben that has the same rift. Great band. I will have to check out Eluveitie.
I knew how the band's name is pronounced since I heard the song UIS ELVETI ( I speak Spanish and the way is written in the song is how we read it in Spanish) In both versions of this song they say the name of the Band ( the album Spirit and Ven (remastered). hehehe. Love this band, I love Anna Murphy.
You're so lucky to meet her dude. I've been really considering learning the hurdy gurdy but they are so expensive and I don't know where I could buy one.
@juckexD Almost right. In Germany we say "Drehleier". "Drehorgel" are those organ pipes with wheels you see very often in Amsterdam or on special medieval markets
***** the tune played at the end of the video is called "AnDro" it's a traditional Breton folk dance/tune that Eluveitie have recorded among other artists hope this helps
ya she is cute, that part where she does the cranking thing: 1:18 is at the begginning of the song; Fire, Flames and wisdom i believe, and then ANDRO at the end!
I'm from America and live in America. I hate it here. I plain moving to either Finland or Japan after college with my wife and daughter who will probably be about six years old then (december 10th is when she is supposed to arrive) I love the culture of the northern European pagan nations. I like their music, I like their government, I like their art and I like their society. I myself am a Christian but don't attend church because I hate what it does and I don't make the bible my ultimate and only source. Rock on Eluveitie
Oh yes it is...at least near there. But if she said the exact place, nobody would know what she is speaking about ;) The instrument is a Alpha Novello from Gotschy. But she is also playing Weichselbaumer-hurdy-gurdys nowadays.
I want to learn this instrument so bad! But I think I'd be like one out of like four in my entire county who plays it. And they are really expensive, everyone I've found is like 1200 to 2000 dollars
It's sad but that is true. He thinks just because he goes to a few shows and listens to a few songs that blends with his stoner metal tunes, he thinks he's a super fan. I don't care if he thinks he's the bloody queen of England. I'm just a fan that loves the music and the flavourful culture they express. That's all. I might like other bands but Eluveitie is an awesome band that deserve to flourish like they have.
@fha64 Well...there probably are hurdy-gurdy builders in your country too...then its cheaper i guess...i found hurdy gurdy builder from e.g. Hungary making also nice instruments for a lot cheaper price. But the price i wrote is for the standard model..im sure she has the luxury-model for like 500 euro more. Those instruments have a lot of technical stuff inside making it expensive.watch gotschy.com ...there is a price list
ask him to listen to the song.. UIS ELVETI.. both versions, they say the name of the band at the beginning!! Unless he is one of those who only know two songs from the band and tells everyone he's a super fan..
" I'm in a band "
"what do you play,Guitar? Bass?"
Nope i play the Hurdy Fucking Gurdy"
I could watch her explain how grass grows. I love her so much XD

Gotschy's Novello Classico that she is playing is one of the best looking Hurdys I've ever seen, and with 3.800 € it has a respectable price o,o

shut up everbody!! the goddess is speaking!
@kikiolee On the band's message board, she stated she's Swiss/Irish hence the interesting accent, you can hear a trace of the Swiss in there.
I knew how the band's name is pronounced since I heard the song UIS ELVETI ( I speak Spanish and the way is written in the song is how we read it in Spanish) In both versions of this song they say the name of the Band ( the album Spirit and Ven (remastered). hehehe. You're so lucky to meet her dude. I've been really considering learning the hurdy gurdy but they are so expensive and I don't know where I could buy one.
Oh, wow. An amazing coincidence. While Inis Mona is the song that got my attention, Andro is the song that kept it. Love that tune.
@juckexD
Almost right. In Germany we say "Drehleier".
"Drehorgel" are those organ pipes with wheels you see very often in Amsterdam or on special medieval markets
only 3 moths before getting into the band?? thats amazing!
@icos211
Yep.I always faught it was the bagpipe(the start of Calling The Rain),
i'm in love.
epic instrument \m/
i talked to her after the concert in Zagreb 14.10.2010
oh my god. That is such a cool instrument, I wanna play one so bad
***** the tune played at the end of the video is called "AnDro" it's a traditional Breton folk dance/tune that Eluveitie have recorded among other artists hope this helps
I knew it! When I heard that tune at the end, I began to think of the song "Andro" by FAUN! :D
ai love you Anna
4:14 is Andro from the Spirit Album ;)
Very beautiful HurdyGurdy!. I recommend you listen to "Himno Gallego (solo de zanfona) por Eloy Vázquez" played with his hurdy-gurdy.
am i the only one who stop listening around 2:15 and just started jamming out with the drummer? xD
Whoever did the interview is a lucky bastard
I think the song she played is called Andro (An Dro?). Faun and Omnia have two great versions of it.
What is the music you played at the end of the video?
She's so cool
ya she is cute, that part where she does the cranking thing: 1:18 is at the begginning of the song; Fire, Flames and wisdom i believe, and then ANDRO at the end!
First time I saw her playing the hurdy gurdy i was like "FUCK!! She's only two years older than me i play that instrument O,o" Its so fucking awesome
i'm Swiss/Irish and i want to play the hurdy gurdy!! i should see if i can't go to a gig of theirs while i'm on the continent. \m/
"The Hurdy Gurdist." That is AWESOME!
She is awesome, i want her.
she is so beautyfull
@chemicalguns I've seen Eluveitie live just a month ago, and she was just fine.. Think it's the sweater.
Wonderful instrument, called "draailier" in Flemish.
Ha! Classic :)
really cool rock on
try the Rose for Epona song its almost whole sang by Anna
it's in fact a spanish origin instrument, and in spain we call it zanfoña or zanfona. Just love it, haha
anna you are beautyfull!!!

She is so metal

I guess that Holy Grail hoodie was a gift for being a guest musician in their first album along with Meri.
4:03 The guy who built it is a eunuch?.. Damn thats a rare instrument indeed :P
@Zappy414 nope :) not really . She's playing Andro , which is an eluveitie song aswell :D
@MultiOtherMe
With a name like Anna Murphy, I wouldn't be surprised, but she has another video where she's speaking Swiss German, so I don't know...
@Treppengeist96 yeah, its Merlin.
wher can I buy this???
holy grail heavy lord's album
@zanychimp Actually, the Hurdy-Gurdy is a Spanish instrument, here is called "Zanfona", wich sound better
Nice
I want to learn this instrument so bad! But I think I'd be like one out of like four in my entire county who plays it. And they are really expensive, everyone I've found is like 1200 to 2000 dollars
No problem. Thanks for the tip though!
@Wickmaeaeaen an epic one
geez the drummer
@Wickmaeaeaen i think its a Moriah, not so sure about that
It's sad but that is true. He thinks just because he goes to a few shows and listens to a few songs that blends with his stoner metal tunes, he thinks he's a super fan. @Zappy414 yup . Really. & it's the same melody, except that Eluveitie's version is a bit faster than faun's :p
This would have been much better without the drummer banging about.
Isn't that a Faun song she plays at the end of the video?
@fha64 Well...there probably are hurdy-gurdy builders in your country too...then its cheaper i guess...i found hurdy gurdy builder from e.g. Hungary making also nice instruments for a lot cheaper price. @pissed7off I read somewhere that she's Irish, but don't know if it's true.
I want one.
@mauricethepatriotSUI I know it's Munich (or at least not eunuch)..
I was just being silly :P
its a violin and a guitar and a bagpipe kinda in one :O AWESOME XD :D
That looks heavy
I miss you
@Himotary ya i realised
@Warheart11 Hahaha!!! :D
She sings at Omnos :)
ask him to listen to the song.. UIS ELVETI.. both versions, they say the name of the band at the beginning!! Unless he is one of those who only know two songs from the band and tells everyone he's a super fan..
