  • The Northrend's howling wind and the entire Northrend in this sense has a northern hemispherical feel / influence (Scandinavians, Canadians etc.). Howling Fjord is the perfect example, it looks very Scandinavian, particularly like the old Norway.
Howling Fjord received its name because the wind that races in from the sea on all three sides produces a constant howl, like a maddened beast seeking its prey. It's not as heavily forested as the Grizzly Hills, or as hilly, but the temperature here is a little milder; between that and the flatter terrain it’s an ideal place to grow grain and other crops. Small farms dot the landscape, particularly down south near Valgarde. To the north the trees begin again, and creatures roam there from the hills above, making it more dangerous but also an excellent place for hunters.
The Howling Fjord is a zone located in southeastern Northrend. Ripped into the southern coastline lies Daggercap Bay, where the forces of Arthas originally landed on the continent. Stranded by the young prince, the 5,000-strong expedition set up the outpost of Valgarde. The small settlement has since become the center of Alliance activity on Northrend. Other Alliance outposts include Westguard Keep and Fort Wildervar.
The majestic fortress known as Utgarde is located in the center of this zone; it is a dungeon complex and one of its sections, Utgarde Keep, is one of the two first instances (the other one being Utgarde Pinnacle) that players encounter when first arriving to Northrend.
Howling Fjord contains bases of both factions and does not have a faction-specific emphasis. From the tuskarr settlement of Kamagua on the Isle of Spears, located off the southwestern coast, there is a giant turtle vessel able to transport players to Moa'ki Harbor in the Dragonblight and from there on to Unu'pe in the Borean Tundra.

In my mind, I thought this remake would be like a normal video. But I forgot that filming on a Beta server is a challenge. Visual glitches and things which are not ready in general made my work complicated (e.g.: I am sure you won't notice much, but the boats don't have people in them. The Lifts have visual glitches, very annoying when you notice). Also, this would have been a two-hour movie, because the area is just huge. I've tried to show as many zones as possible, without rushing things too much. If you want to see more, it looks like you have to play it yourself or wait for some gameplays :)
Do you like this video? Give it a like, listen to more (playlist links below), subscribe. Do you want to further support my work? Details in the video description.

For those interested, the main instrument used in most of these Howling Fjord tunes is called nyckelharpa. A nyckelharpa is a traditional Swedish keyed fiddle. It usually has three or sometimes four rows of keys that are used as frets which changes the pitch of the string. It has four playable strings and twelve resonance strings which works as reverb. What makes this instrument so interesting is the possibility to play multiple voicings at the same time, which makes one instrument sound like multiple musicians.
I started playing this wonderful instrument because of the music from this zone, and I still love it to this day. I hope more people will find an interest in the nyckelharpa to widen it´s reputation.
    /Gustaf

When the music changes so frequently its hard to make a connection between a zone and a song for nostalgia's sake.

Fun fact: Based on the geological nature of fjords and the fictional history of Azeroth, this region isn't a true fjord.
Fjords are formed by glaciers carving the land, which naturally takes tremendous amounts of time.
Because of the position of Utgarde Keep at the back of the inlet and the fact that it existed there prior to the Sundering, the Howling "Fjord" would have been a landlocked region originally and Utgarde Keep indicates that no glacier could've carved through the area. Looking at the map of ancient Kalimdor when it was one large supercontinent, there's no indication that the region would've fed out to the sea, so it's most likely that the inlet was simply part of a river that the vrykul had dammed up with Utgarde.
Since Azeroth's current map has only existed in that state for ten millennia, the world has no natural fjords and it would take hundreds of thousands of years for any to occur, which would likely occur on the western side of Northrend around Sholazar Basin and the Borean Tundra, as the only significant glacier in the content is Icecrown itself, which naturally doesn't feed into the Howling "Fjord."
Needless to say, Blizzard doesn't exactly care for worldbuilding in regards to terrain accuracy.
If finding out the region isn't a real fjord boggles the mind, just think about the fact that we've probably only been seeing 1/4th of Azeroth's surface.
For the longest time, there's been a debate over whether the map we've seen is the whole of Azeroth's surface, or only half of it, as we don't know what's opposite the Maelstrom, as the ocean west of Kalimdor is the "Veiled Sea" and the ocean east of the Eastern Kingdom's is the "Forbidding Sea," which suggests there's something opposite the Maelstrom to justify the two names. So the Azeroth we've seen thus far may only be on one half of its antemeridian.
However, since Pandaria's southernmost region - the Krasarang Wilds - is tropical instead of a tundra or taiga, we can infer that Azeroth's equator is actually south of Pandaria, meaning we've also only seen the northern hemisphere of Azeroth, never the south. If the equator cut through the Maelstrom as many hypothesize, Pandaria's southern half would be colder than the northern half, as it would be closest to the south pole.

    • @JaTonda

Real world lore is messy a lot.
Not to mention that due to loss of information when transforming 3D object to 2D like globe to a map the objects get distorted. We could see the whole Azeroth because of that, Pandaria could be like real world Australia. which seem to be close to south pole on maps.

Wai u do dis to me, I wana forget as much as possible the wotlk related music and everything actually, so I can somehow enjoy it once again with classic release. Since a complete memory eraser, brain wash, lobotomy thingy is out of the question, only way to do that is to stay away from youtube videos with such content. And now, after watching a Bellular video, bam, Howling Fjord music in my room. Not fair, Now I start googleing again about leaks for wrath classic release date and all. Anyway, your channel is great, youtube knows too well I am loving it.

Ouch, I feel you (hopefully I didn't just jinxed it again and my laptop won't give up on me this year, or the next)...
I got my laptop in 2014 after spending 4 years without a PC. By betting a portion ("just" 30€ - in reality I really don't want to give these companies anything over 1€ per year, maximum, but I had to risk it because I had found a kinda cheap one on sale, but great one for WoD) of the money I had saved, on my favorite team scoring and conceding a certain number of goals (total). It won 4-2 iirc, we were famous for such scores back then, Mourinho recently came and changed that (1-0....) and we've lost so many great players anyway.
Anyhow. Earned me the last ~150 euros I needed xD
      Forza Roma!!!

TBC music turned off??!? This is madness!!!12
But whatever floats your boat. At least it's not grizzly hills again xD I'm tired of ppl parroting that when there's a multitude of great(er) tracks, as much as I too like it and wotlk in general.
p.s. I had spent too much time in this zone (Howling Fjord) and Storm Peaks so I usually prefer Icecrown and Zul'drak nowadays tbh. Or Borean Tundra and Dragonblight (it's a bit awkward at times but I still love its feel), depends. Nothing will ever top the mesmerizing+/soothing Matt Uelmen n Derek Duke stuff tho, for me. I mean, terokkar/shattrath and draenei music, if not everything else....

Now, I obviously haven't listened to them much but my watch later list has plenty of that kind of stuff. Soon TM...

You think you could do dungeons this same way? A lot of dungeons have really good music that isn't just a copy paste from the zone they're located in and a lot of them, especially in wrath, have really good music in them.

wish they would have used the updated engine for classic and used the new assets and textures they made for cata to replace the old ones. they could have then redone the assets for tbc and wrath

    • @Meisio

That bad? I find them decent. I regard WoW Classic (up until WotLK) as Classics. Keeping the original textures and feeling is part of the experience.
But I know what you are saying, I notice a big difference even in terms of lighting.
