I love darker takes on TMNT but at the same time it's always scary and a little disturbing seeing any of the brothers get seriously hurt, like when Donnie broke his shell, or even killed because I grew up watching them
I’m not really a huge fan of these plots in the TMNT comic (or comics in general) when a character is severely injured or brutally killed for the sake of shock value and shock value only. The Last Ronin did a good job giving each turtle a meaningful death compared to TMNT Urban Legends
I didn’t read the Image comics, but I clearly remember seeing articles about Donnie dying and once I saw that panel of Splinter holding his body, I actually cried a bit. The absolute brutal nature of the Image comics always made me uneasy and not in a good way. Thank god we have The Last Ronin. At the time, I’d rather read the Mirage comics again.
I don’t know all that much about TMNT, but It’s still disturbing to see Raph get his face blown off, and it’s even weirder that his brothers kinda just laugh it off. I have heard that there are a few dark TMNT stories where the turtles go though some horrific events, but I haven’t checked them out yet.
@@07twinsfan So you’re telling the ninja turtles aren’t real? You mean there’s not ninja mutant turtles running through New York? When these comic book clearly give you proof? My whole world turned upside down 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
It's pretty gruesome to see the turtles go through stuff like that. That's why I am thankful that at least the Mutagen provides them a minor healing factor, so lost limbs could regenerate over time. Though I'm not so sure about organs like eyes though. Imagine what a mutant Axolotl would be capable of; Or a Tartagrade.
The comic does imply they have a form of accelerated healing which appears to restore lost limbs or bodily functions overtime at a slow pace. Sure it ain’t Wolverine’s healing factor, but it still gets the job done. This comic series is awesome as we get to see the 4 bond closer than ever before and I do believe Raph got his vision back in his right eye(?) probably sometime after or during the finale of the comics. Though the during finale part is very much up to debate since I haven’t seen it and this is only a guess/prediction/theory which is based off the knowledge I know about healing factors
I think it was mentioned in the original Vol 3 run (the letters column specifically) that Raphael's vision was returning and his face was healing. My take on the end of Urban Legends is that it was eventually going to come back, just we fill in the blanks ourselves. I really enjoy Vol 3 as a whole, it's an interesting interpretation of the TMNT verse.
Your right about the mutagen healing them. I recall in an art book one of the wrighters said something to the effect that donatello was slowly growing the rest of his body back like a lizard grows it's tail back. Its seems like they were super inconsistent about the speed in witch everything regrows I feel like you would have partial vision back before you regrew your hand
I remember watching one of the cartoons of these guys as a kid. Never did I see them this savage, but man it makes them way way more badass. Especially with that healing factor. With how slow it is, as long as they don’t out right die, they can pretty much survive anything and look like nothing ever happened. Just another reason why mutant ninja turtles are awesome. 😋
Urban legends is a really cool run in my opinion, especially with the newer issues which make it fit with vol. 4, you can make your own headcanon and decide if those stories happened or not. Leaving something like that for the fans to deside is really cool
The fan-made 24 and 25 connect to Vol 4 even better than UL’s attempt which feels open ended. And they also connect back to 1 & 2, and various Tales issues.
I'm so happy that they finished this storyline and in color cause I will admit, even though I love the Turtles and their comic run, I hated the style of this comic because it was ridiculously horrible to make out the art and the backgrounds. Now I will look into re reading the entire thing and in color.
ive been reading these from the early 90s image run to its rerelease by IDW. Its startes off very brutal and dark, but then starts to jell back in to its conventional adventures
If Leo got his hand back then I believe Raph will get his face back & that's probably also why the others are making light of the situation bcuz they know how their healing factors work.
thats still messed up, even if you can recover that would be seriously traumatic to have an entire chunk of your face blown off and just having your brothers, the people who have grown up with you, the people who have had your back through thick and thin make jokes about it is messed up

Love these comics I wish they would make an animated movie or live action or video game adaptaton. Or maybe just continue with this ERA. Still happy that the last ronin exist and I hope they make a animated movie for it.
I feel like them being able to heal completely is because they are reptiles, and in real life turtles can't regrow limbs or anything but many other species of reptile can regrow limbs. So I'm thinking that that's the reason they're able to heal so completely.
Y'know, growing up in a European country where all I knew about the TMNT was the cartoon, and that "yeah, the comics existed", in the 90's I always saw Raphael with an eyepatch in the odd comic the older brother of a friend had but never knew where that came from. By the time the cartoon series came out Leo had the blue mask, Donnie had the purple mask, and Mikey had the orange mask, but Raphael kept his red mask. Raphael was the old school, still R.A.P.H.A.E.L, trash-talking, hardcore New Yorker type of Turtle! He never really changed from the old comic series like the other three turtles did.
I think the mutigin is something similar to the Forced Evolutionary Virus from the Fallout series. The stuff in their system initially rapidly grew them up into humanoid turtles, but who says that was all it did. I am starting to think that the mutigin is constantly evolving the turtles on a very slow level. Increasing their strength, speed, endurance, durability, and healing ability. Crank up the healing ability and they can regenerate. I think Raph might evolve to either regrow his eye or see in a different way.
I must say that I would have much preferred if they did the re-run and closing issues in black and white instead. The original wasn't intended to be in color, so it looks off when there's color applied to it. Still, it's great that they could go back and finish up this insane ride of a comic.
Reptiles and amphibians in real life have regeneration properties I don't know why they have to say it was the ooze changing them helping them to heal. I've seen injured critters regrow limbs and tails with time. I know its a comic but sometimes you don't have to make something up when real life is just as amazing. I think it was that they naturally regenerated because of their reptilian DNA, but the ooze helped and enhanced it, or at least that's what I think it is
