Blackcurrant drinks became hugely popular in the UK due to WWII. There were problems getting oranges, and strict rationing. So there was a push to use blackcurrants which grow wild in the UK and are easy to cultivate. They are actually higher in vitamin C than oranges. Ribena is typically purchased as "squash", a liquid concentrate that you add water to. Premixed Ribena is available in cartons like the one that you had or in 1/2 litre bottles. There is also the brand Robinson's, which does apple and blackcurrant squash. Definitely worth trying, if you can find it.
That’s a great bit of history you shared! Thank you!! Black currant is now, by far, one of our favorite juice flavors for sure! Hopefully one day we can try the Robinson’s brand of juices.

The thing about boost is it actually got a bit of a bad rep because some urban-legend went round saying it was really bad for you 9high in calories, fat, sugar etc) but it's a standard chocolate bar so no better or worse for me. And no caffeine ;D - My canadian friend loves these and always take them overseas when i see her

Ribena cartons like that are pretty much a lunchbox/childhood things. Someone else mentioned it already, but Ribena and "squash" drinks are big here as a cordial. The carton is pre-mixed with water but you can get bottles of cordial here and it is a very common household item. As a child, we visited the states but I didn't like water so my parents could only give me soda (or fizzy drinks as we call them) - I was a very fussy child
After trying the Ribena and tasting how good it is, it’s made us want to try more British drinks! We here in the states are big on soda (or fizzy drinks if you’d like) so these type of cordial drinks aren’t as common. Thanks for sharing!! 😁
Prior to the 1960s, when 'Ready Salted' crisps were introduced, all 'plain' crisps came unsalted, but contained a little blue paper twist containing the salt. 'Smiths Crisps' (now part of the Walkers brand,) re-introduced the idea when they launched Smiths Salt 'n' Shake, and they were so popular that a couple of years later, they introduced 'Flavour 'n' Shake' which came in a mult-pack of six (or twelve) bags of unseasoned crisps, with a selection of little bags of seasoning to flavour them with. They usually contained ten (or twenty) bags of various flavourings, like cheese and onion, salt and vinegar, beef, bacon, tomato ketchup, etc. So you had the choice of whichever flavour was your favourite; of course that left a number of flavouring bags left over, so as kids we would experiment in creating combination flavours like 'beef and tomato', 'bacon, cheese & onion', etc. Sadly, flavour 'n' shake crisps are no longer available in the UK. Someone told me that this is due to the way that crisps are flavoured these days: Originally it was done just by adding a fixed amount of seasoning powder to the bag before sealing, but nowadays, to ensure a richer flavour that lasts longer without fading, flavour crystals are placed in the bottom of the bag before the crisps. These crystals then evaporate over the time between bagging the crisps and selling them. (This was given as the reason why you might occasionally find a crisp with a blue edge at the bottom of a bag of cheese and onion crisps. Not appetizing to look at, but that crisp, having absorbed most of the flavour intended for the whole bag was strong enough to make you shudder.)

That sounds amazing! ...especially the Creme Egg. There are food trucks, food stands at amusement parks and fairs, and some restaurants here in the states that do similar things. But, like you, we’ve never tried one and would love to do so one day!
Deep fried Mars is to die for. I was always revolted by the thought of it until I actually tried one and MMM!! Not keen on deep fried Snickers though and never tried deep fried cream egg 🤔
Boost bars are named after an energy drink we have (also called boost haha) Over here you can buy ribena in the little cartons like you had or buy it in cordial/squash form, which I don't think you have over there but it's basically the concentrated version of ribena that you mix with water 😊 loved the video by the way!
Thanks for the love!! We have concentrate drink mixes you can buy in a can and add water to, but we definitely some have it in black currant! As for the boost bar being named after and energy drink...that’s really cool! Have a great day 😁
Is that why it’s called a boost bar? I’ve always thought they looked too similar not to be ripping each other off...makes sense now! Thank you for this little nugget of knowledge 😆
Blackcurrant is a very common flavouring in much of Europe. Ice cream, sweets, drinks, puddings and so on. Here in France a very common aperitif is "kir" which is blackcurrant liqueur (creme de cassis) with wine, or "kir royale" when made with champagne. In the UK a popular pudding is called "summer pudding" which is a mix of summer berries and currants (including blackcurrant) heated with some sugar for just a minute to release their juices and then chilled in a casing of bread. The bread soaks up the fruit juices as it sets - serve with cream or ice cream, delicious. Blackcurrant jam is also delicious - a really strong flavour. And blackcurrant tea (herbal tea) is lovely.
That summer pudding sounds really good!! So does the jam! Thank you for sharing all this information with us!! We love it when people leave such informative comments like this 😃
@@FromtheHobbitHole I love soft fruits. I saw a programme on TV the other day where they spoke about saskatoon berries, grown in that part of Canada and neighbouring areas, so I'm now trying to find some plants to try growing here. In a local garden centre I also recently discovered some honeyberry plants (originally from Siberia) which give a fruit similar to blueberries, but unlike blueberries they should grow on my alkaline soil 😁 Do you have many different types in your part of the states ?
Never knew there were so many soft fruits in the world! The only berries we can think of that are seen regionally here in PA are red and black wine berries and wild blueberries. There are probably lots more that we don’t know about. We do have a really good growing season for strawberries (which is this time of year). Locally grown strawberries are very popular because of their rich color and flavor as well as their juiciness. Great for strawberry pie and shortcake!
The salt and shake crisps are definitely a brilliant idea! Do they make other ones with different flavor packets so you can “customize” your own flavor? If they don’t, then they really should!!
The carton of Ribena is the pre-made equivalent of the cordial version. If you ever get sent a big bottle of Ribena cordial, dilute it with water first to get it to the desired consistency. I saw one video where they drank neat / undiluted cordial. Lol
Did they know it was supposed to be diluted before drinking it?!? We’ve grown up with similar drinks that need to be diluted so we’ll definitely be keen on not making that mistake!
You need to try: Fry's Peppermint Cream Kendal Mint Cake Jammy Dodgers Terry's Chocolate Orange Bourbon Creams Wagon Wheels Double Decker Twirl Fruitella Dolly Mixtures Liquorice Allsorts Those last two I've never seen anyone on UA-cam do.

I like the chips where you can add your own salt. I grew up with grandparents who had high blood pressure so I learned to minimize the salt I used in food, and when cooking for myself, never added any, at all, unless absolutely necessary. So, to me, most chips, crisps, French fries, and other snack foods, are way too heavily salted for me to enjoy. (even if you tell them NO SALT when you're ordering fries at the fast food place.)

Our juice is real fruit juice but the ones I have had from Canada and the U.S are not very natural tasting. I still have a hard time with the thought that juice comes in powder form in the U.S.
Sorry for the lengthy reply. SO SO SO SO glad you said Caramel and not Carmel like almost all other Americans but then Nathen ruined it. Squirrel shit! ua-cam.com/video/ksxdrMPUAwk/v-deo.html
Yeahhh...Nathan still struggles with saying caramel and nor carmel :P Seems like a lot of companies shrunk the size of their products over the years. And that is quite a funny joke about the Topic bar. hahaha!
You can get hard caramel. I believe the difference between toffee and caramel is that caramel uses more milk and cooked at a different temperature to toffee?
You are correct...sort of. In the early 1900s the trees were banned in an effort to protect the logging industry from White Pine Blistering Rust. Supposedly blackcurrant trees spread that disease to other trees rather easily. But in the ‘60s the law changed so that individual states could decide on whether they are illegal. As of right now, several states (New York, Vermont, Oregon) have been growing them. We didn’t know this until you mentioned it and we searched Wikipedia. 😉
The reason you haven't come across blackcurrant flavour in the USA is because blackcurrant farming was banned in the early 1900s, when blackcurrants were thought to be a threat to the logging industry, since they contributed to the causes of 'white pine blister rust'. The federal ban was shifted to the jurisdiction of individual states in 1966, and has since been lifted by a number of states, starting with New York in 2003. Though there have been attempts to grow blackcurrants in various states since then, after over 100 years of no blackcurrants in the USA, it's likely to take some time for the crops to establish themselves before it becomes more common in the states. In the UK, blackcurrant flavour drinks (Ribena amongst them) are produced in various forms: the ready-to-drink, 'juice box' variants like the one you tried, and also blackcurrant flavoured carbonated drinks, The most popular form for Ribena is as a blackcurrant cordial, which is a concentrated juice which is diluted with water before drinking. ('Dilute-to-taste' drinks, also known as 'squash' is one UK drink that doesn't appear to have caught on in the USA.)
Silly question...did we try milk chocolate Bounty? We ask simply because we don’t remember reading on the packaging what type of chocolate it contained. Plus, the chocolate was a lighter color which made us automatically think Milk Chocolate. We could be wrong though... 🤔
Thank you! Typically we see coconut paired with dark chocolate here in the states so we didn’t even think about whether we had a milk or dark chocolate bar.
From the Hobbit Hole If you look at the front of most reputable chocolates with in the UK this usually includes Cadbury's and the own brand from Sainsbury's and various other supermarkets they have four little coloured squares usually the right-hand corner bottom it's the traffic light system red means very bad Amber means ok and green means that good for you it usually has fats saturated fat sugar and salt content

Plain chocolate Bounty’s taste better than the milk chocolate you tried, not so sweet. I’m glad that you pronounce Caramel the correct way, Car A mel, whereas most Americans say Carmel. But Nougat should be pronounced “ noogar”.
We were corrected enough times about the pronunciation of caramel in our earlier videos that we worked hard and to make sure we pronounced it correctly 😉 And coconut typically goes better with dark chocolate so we believe you when you say the plain version is better
Creme egg is pronounced the same as cream here. You had one already when you had the Twisted bite size. Creme Egg is the original and Twisted is just a variation on a theme. watch out for all that sugar in the fondant interior!

Wow! That is one beautiful cat.
Thank you! She’s definitely a unique one!!
My mum can't have to much salt because of kidney problems so she eats those crisps, obviously minus the salt 🙂🇬🇧🇺🇸
It’s really nice that there’s a not salted option like Salt n Shake that allows people, like you mom, to still enjoy crisps without the extra sodium
Oh and everyone likes a Ribena on a hot day, or with honey and lemon and boiling water if you’ve got a cold
as I was growing up you were either a galaxy lover or a Cadbury dairey milk person as there is a difference in flavour
The best Bounty bars are the dark chocolates ones! 😋
You can get bottles of ribena😊 there are a few different flavours, like Pineapple and mango, strawberry, but you can also get the squash where you get a concentrated bottle and you make it with water, however strong/sweet you want!
Those other flavors sound so good!
@@FromtheHobbitHole I got them mixed up 🙃 it's Pineapple and passionfruit, mango and lime, strawberry and very Berry 😊 they're all so good. You can get all online too 😊 x

If you like the novelty value of Kinder Hippos, and the creativity and cuteness of Cadbury Creme Eggs, (it IS pronounced 'Cream', by the way,) Try a Terry's Chocolate Orange - that sucker will blow your mind!
We’ve heard of that! And...we think someone might be sending us one in the future, but we aren’t 100% positive 😉
You can get dark chocolate bounty too and it's DELISH.
That one we might like a little better
Some chipshops in the UK do deep-fried chocolate bars, like Mars, Snickers and creme eggs. Never had one myself, but would like to try one.
I think when crisps first appeared in the UK that was how they were sold. It was Smiths salt and shake crisps when I grew up in the 60's and 70's.
We’ve grown up with similar drinks that need to be diluted so we’ll definitely be keen on not making that mistake!
boost is the best, finally people agree!
Is it not popular to like boost??
@@FromtheHobbitHole it's not one of the more popular bars, but i think it's the best one
We are surprised that it isn’t more popular because it is AMAZING!!!

Fry's Peppermint Cream
Kendal Mint Cake
Jammy Dodgers
Terry's Chocolate Orange
Bourbon Creams
Wagon Wheels
Double Decker
Twirl
Fruitella
Dolly Mixtures
Liquorice Allsorts

Salt and shake crisps nice
I like the chips where you can add your own salt. I grew up with grandparents who had high blood pressure so I learned to minimize the salt I used in food, and when cooking for myself, never added any, at all, unless absolutely necessary. So, to me, most chips, crisps, French fries, and other snack foods, are way too heavily salted for me to enjoy. (even if you tell them NO SALT when you're ordering fries at the fast food place.)
That’s really good that you do that! It’s really easy to have too much salt in one’s diet.

As an adult I have Ribena light from concentrate or in a 500ml bottle, ready made up (but trying not to use too much plastic) at Christmas they do 'Ribena winter spice' it's soooo good!!
Ribena Winter Spice?! Now that sounds interesting! What do they put in it to give it the winter spice?

Curly Wurley is more a kids one, bounty isn't my favourite because of the coconut, but I LOVE ripple's and aero and creme eggs!! Pronounced cream. Ribena and other juice cartons are more a kids lunch type thing, I think Americans call them juice box?

If I remember rightly 'Boost' used to say it boosted your energy because it had Galangal in it - they might not be able to claim that now
What is Galangal?? Don’t know if we’ve ever heard of it 🤔
Are you thinking of Boost Guarana? Which were in a green packet and were slightly fruity tasting. Those did have caffeine in because Guarana is very high in caffeine. Regular boost has glucose.
Our juice is real fruit juice but the ones I have had from Canada and the U.S are not very natural tasting. I still have a hard time with the thought that juice comes in powder form in the U.S.
There definitely is a taste different between juice with real fruit juice and artificial...real is sooo much better!!

Ribena and other fruit drinks can be bought in a bottle as concentrate called 'cordial' over here. Put some in a glass, usually about a half inch and fill with water to your desired taste.
Yes, it's "Cream Egg".
The UK joke about the Topic ad was "What has a hazelnut in every bite?" Squirrel shit! ua-cam.com/video/ksxdrMPUAwk/v-deo.html
Yeahhh...Nathan still struggles with saying caramel and nor carmel :P
Seems like a lot of companies shrunk the size of their products over the years.
And that is quite a funny joke about the Topic bar. hahaha!
baylessnow
You got it wrong re the squirrel joke. It’s supposed to rhyme... so it should be “shite”, not “shit”.
I dunno about anyone else but, if caramel is hard - that’s toffee 🤷♀️ Always thought of it like that. Weird?
You can get hard caramel. I believe the difference between toffee and caramel is that caramel uses more milk and cooked at a different temperature to toffee?
I heard blackcurrant trees aren't allowed to be grown in the US... for some reason???
You are correct...sort of. In the early 1900s the trees were banned in an effort to protect the logging industry from White Pine Blistering Rust. Supposedly blackcurrant trees spread that disease to other trees rather easily. But in the ‘60s the law changed so that individual states could decide on whether they are illegal. As of right now, several states (New York, Vermont, Oregon) have been growing them. We didn’t know this until you mentioned it and we searched Wikipedia. 😉
The best is the mint areo
Do you give back spongers
We hope that black currant becomes more commonly utilized over here with flavoring because we think that Americans are missing out!
Sometimes you get no salt bag sometimes you get 2.
Ha! How interesting. Guess their quality assurance isn’t always on their game 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♀️
Dark chocolate Bounty every time.
Silly question...did we try milk chocolate Bounty? We ask simply because we don’t remember reading on the packaging what type of chocolate it contained. Plus, the chocolate was a lighter color which made us automatically think Milk Chocolate. We could be wrong though... 🤔
@@FromtheHobbitHole Yes, you had the milk chocolate covered one. Dark chocolate one is noticeably darker and has a red instead of blue wrapper.
Thank you! Typically we see coconut paired with dark chocolate here in the states so we didn’t even think about whether we had a milk or dark chocolate bar.
Please, tell us all how you did meet each other? Dressed up as Snow-white and Gaston?
We share the answer to that question along with many others in our Q&A video: ua-cam.com/video/2QBv5TTk--I/v-deo.html

From the Hobbit Hole
If you look at the front of most reputable chocolates with in the UK this usually includes Cadbury's and the own brand from Sainsbury's and various other supermarkets they have four little coloured squares usually the right-hand corner bottom it's the traffic light system red means very bad Amber means ok and green means that good for you it usually has fats saturated fat sugar and salt content

Plain chocolate Bounty’s taste better than the milk chocolate you tried, not so sweet. I’m glad that you pronounce Caramel the correct way, Car A mel, whereas most Americans say Carmel. But Nougat should be pronounced “ noogar”.
We were corrected enough times about the pronunciation of caramel in our earlier videos that we worked hard and to make sure we pronounced it correctly 😉
And coconut typically goes better with dark chocolate so we believe you when you say the plain version is better
Creme egg is pronounced the same as cream here. You had one already when you had the Twisted bite size. Creme Egg is the original and Twisted is just a variation on a theme. watch out for all that sugar in the fondant interior!
The fondant is definitely sugar packed! Lol. It never occurred to us how the twisted was the same thing but in a different design...thanks for pointing that out to us!
The things you are saying are “not overly sweet” like Ribena and Creme Eggs we consider extereeeeemly sweet 🤷🏻♂️👍🏻
