Yeah some of these people didn't seem to realize that YES, she liked HIM LIKE THAT, but NOT LEON to her...did you watch the movie??? That was a beautiful thing about the movie that Matilda even mentions LEON'S NOT LIKE THAT...yeah she had a crush on him, but he just slowly begins to love her like a "daughter" .... that's the point of the movie WEIRDOS
Some folks in these comments have sick minds!! Leon was NOT a pedophile!! He could have easily taken advantage of Mathilda's infatuation, but he did not. He clearly chose not to even "go there'. While the story about his first love was true, he told Mathilda about it in the way that he did in order to let her down easy without hurting her. He paused in the hallway when he left for work (after her revelation) to think of how, exactly, he was going to handle it and he chose NOT to act on it. Leon was childish in some ways, but he was also very wise... he didn't harm her sexually or emotionally because he DID love her, just not the way she wanted him to. She loved Leon, too, but she misconstrued it in a sexual way due to the way she was raised in that dysfunctional environment... simply because she didn't know any better. Leon knew better. He was an honorable man. He understood what was happening with her and why he had to let her down gently. He used his former lover's untimely death for the excuse as to why he "could never love another", not even her. He told her no so sweetly because if he'd said, "You're just a little girl" it would have destroyed her little heart. She wanted Leon to view her as "not a child"... because she wasn't a child in the sense that she was jaded and had been through so much in her life. He only told her that sappy stuff at the end to get her to escape without him... he KNEW he wasn't getting out alive. He knew when that tear dripped off his nose that he would never see her again.
yes people doesn't understand that leon doesn't really know how to be a father figure , that why sometime he make decision that can sound awkward but he didn't have any awkward thinking about it , mathilda is for sur in love of leon , but leon isn't in love of mathilda and he never did something creepy to her or trying to abuse her . But peoples want to see leon as a child predator those days sadly , cause they don't know anymore how to understand a character and his motivation .
People were so weirded-out by their relationship. Two emotionally damaged people connecting. She had a warped view of love because of her parents and he was emotionally stunted for whatever reason. But he was also adult enough not to let the relationship get physical. He needed someone to care about and she needed someone to care about her. It worked as weird as it was.
In the director's cut, it's said that Leon fell in love with a girl in France. When her father found out about their relationship, he murdered his daughter in a rage. Leon then shot the father to avenger her, which is why he immigrated to New York and started his life as a hitman. Yes, Leon is every bit as stunted and traumatized as Mathilde, and theirs is a unique love story: one not based on sex, but genuine emotion.
Well, if you take the movie as it is, I agree. However, Natalie has said in interviews that her parents objected to some aspects of the script that they felt were inappropriate and were subsequently changed. So, all in all, we have to be thankful that the movie was produced in America. Anyone familiar with French cinema knows what I mean.
@@t0dd000Yeah… but the writer/director began a relationship with a 12 year old when he was 29. Although supposedly the relationship didn’t “officially” start until she was 15, the age of consent in France. His then wife said the movie’s relationship was based on theirs.
Many people don't understand why Leon didn't realize that Stansfield was coming from behind to shoot him. Bro, Leon lost a lot of blood, used all his strength to dig a hole in the wall in record time and a bomb exploded in his apartment. Obviously his senses won't be at 100% after all that.
I think he did know he was behind him, his hand was already on the grenades. Even if he didnt, he probably heard the gun cocking and shifted his hands.
I honestly think, on some level, Leon knew his life wasn't going to end peacefully. He'd been killing people too long to not die by the gun. But he wasn't about to go down without taking his enemy with him.
@@t0dd000 na, there was only one way out, if he died then Matilda would get lost in paper work and be free, if he lived both would be hunted. He fell on his sword, taking the bad guy with him. Hence the 'I love you' bit, he had already made his choice.
Despite Matilda's crush on him, Leon never took advantage. He was an honorable man. What sealed their relationship as the father/daughter type for me was the scene in Stansfield's office when he rescues her (yet again) and they hug ... and then we see their shoes as the camera pans down. His huge and hers so tiny and 18 inches off the ground. He embraced her the way a father does.
clearly everyone having a dirty mind about it (disgusting people)...... doesnt have kids themselves, they do NOT understand the relationship between a father and his kids, especially a daughter.....
@@LittleBlueOwl318 Yup. This is a scenario that many men can relate to. Many women as well. A friend's daughter latched onto me at an early age. Put me in a podium. Saw me as an ideal _mate_ not just an "uncle." She's now 27 and I call her niece and she calls me uncle and she, of course, has grown out of all that. But … this happens all the time. Same as this film. I'm certain some broken men and women out there abuse this common situation, but the vast majority do not.
Natalie Portman’s first movie out of the gate and she proved what a great actress she is. She definitely held her own alongside Jean Reno and Gary Oldman.
Always loved this movie. I invited my friends over to watch it bec they know I dig up movies they have never heard or seen. They were blown away. So underrated. You have great taste and eye for solid legit films.
Great movie for sure. My one gripe about this reaction compilation is that nearly every single one that is featured called it a ring when Leon gave dude the "gift" from Mathilda and that just irks me lol. It's a pain, not a ring and I wanna smack some of these reactors for it
The muzzle flash was unbelievable. I loved how the director went that route. We'd already seen many killings right in our face. He could've easily had blown the brains right in our face. This was epic 🤯. RIP Leon 😪
The only reason I can come up with, as to why some people get the wrong idea about Leon and Matilda, is they can't read facial expressions or body language! Because in every scene, it's written all over his face and in his body language, Leon is, INCREDIBLY!!!, uncomfortable, every time Matilda says, or does something inappropriate; hell, half the time he's choking on his milk and practically falling out of his chair. This film is a masterclass in acting, Natalie Portman delivers a performance any actor would be envious of, amazing debut! Gary is so manic, and pushes the boundaries, between unhinged and campy/cheesy, since he's so over the top, but always is restrained enough, to keep from going quite that far. And lastly, Jean Reno, does not get nearly enough credit, he's brilliant in an almost silent role, selling everything with looks, mannerisms, gestures and presence.
Leon knew Stansfield was behind him. After unaliving that many police, they would be constantly hunted. By letting Stansfield get him, the cops would be more likely to give up looking for her. He freed her from a life of being a fugitive, while still getting payback. Very similar to Road to Perdition.
And in this specific situation you see that Leon loves her so much all he's trying to do is say whatever it takes for her to go down that chute because the longer she takes, the less the chances are they'll both survive...it's so goddamn gangster the Professional is one of my favorite movies
And to clarify. We see from Leons eyes as he breaths his first breath of freedom. Stansfield raises the gun. The flash. You don't hear the shot that gets you. Leon pulls the pin off the grenade. As he's lying there, bleeding out. He's been shot. His left hand grasped the grenades. Stansfield grabs his left hand. Lein grabs stansfields hand with his ( Leon's ) right hand. Thus is when he pulls the pin. Places it in stansfields hand.thus is from Mayltilda. She got her wish. Her little brother is avenged. Stansfield is dead. In a warriors last breath. He should still have the sense to exicute 1 final blow.
I don't know if you've seen the whole movie or just fragments. It's one of the best movies of the 90's, the connection between the characters is so special that it moves you emotionally.
Mathilda had the hots for Leon, as she was emotionally well beyond her years, but in a puppydog, first love kind of way. It was a "grown, sexual, sensual relationship" to her, but his was first a view of annoyance, and then acceptance, and then protective love for "family." This was all discussed openly in the press in the days of making and then screening the film. It was only years later (after Natalie Portman toke a woke pill), that people started thinking that an honest portrayal of a relationship between broken humans was somehow a bad thing. She played a slightly older version of the same theme in Beautiful Girls, with an all star cast.
She was obviously a kid, a kid who suffered living in a toxic family and suffering horrid trauma (her family's murder by cops), and who also sexualized her "concept of love" for the first male who seemed to show her any love. The current "view" that people are completely non-sexual until the minute they turn 18 (or age of consent in your region) is hilarious, and only a sickness from very recent history.
I absolutely love the scene where Mathilda propositions Leon because the way he turns her down is brilliantly written. The natural response of "you're a child and I'm an adult" wouldn't have worked on her - she already doesn't care about that because her view of life and love is so skewed by her upbringing. Instead, Leon gets vulnerable with her despite being very uncomfortable and tells her he wouldn't be any good at what she wants from him. And she lets it go immediately. Fucking brilliant. It's too bad that scene is only included in the director's cut. It really makes their dynamic much more comprehensible.
Fun fact about this scene they for got to let the city of New York know they would be filming that day so people actually thought a real shoot out was happening and cops showed up on the scene as well to help to find out it was a movie
I read that Reno made sure that Leon and Matilda's relations like father and his daughter prior filming. It seems weird that she sees Leon as her crush, but Leon didn't take advantage of Matilda when she was vulnerable.
Reno was an amazing actor and would understand his character's beliefs and character. That people deny that in the moment, and after what she has suffered, Mathilda seems drawn to love and wants to live it the only way she's learned to express it kind of annoys me, and has for decades. She grew up in a crime family and neighborhood. The only love she sees is sexual, she is having feelings, and in the heat of the moment, wants to dive into them.
What kind of man would he have been if he had? He knew what she was feeling & did not. His own feelings were in turmoil as he had pretty much cut himself off from emotion to cope with his job. She reawakening his 'humanity' & that was where his love for her came from, not some base desire
“The actor/filmmaker explained: “When Luc Besson did Léon, the story of a 13-year-old girl in love with an older man, it was very inspired by us since it was written while our story started. But no media made the link”. Although the movie was received well by critics, it has long been noted that the scene where Portman’s Mathilda attempts to sing ‘Happy Birthday, Mr President’ seductively, imitating Marilyn Monroe, feels unnecessary. Still, that’s not the worst moment of the movie; a cut scene shows the 12-year-old telling Leon that she’d like him to take her virginity. Moreover, an uncomfortable scene where the hitman walks in on Mathilda in the shower luckily never made it off the page, thanks to Portman’s parents’ insistence.”
Guys, did some of you really not see that Matilda actually did think she wanted him sexually but of course she's a kid she didn't even know what it was. Obviously (should be anyway) Leon was strictly wanting a fatherly relationship. Some of y'all kinda dense
It’s crazy how others can influence your perspective on situations in hindsight. When I first saw this movie, I never got the creepy vibe the lead’s relationship. I always thought the Leon character became appropriately uncomfortable when Matilda would act a certain way around him. I just honestly thought Matilda was influenced by her environment and had an incorrect view of how to love someone. That’s why I thought it was ironic that Leon, not having any experience in love, was the one that was able to correct Matilda on the subject as he was able to grasp it himself.
Perfectly put. Also, The movie makes it clear that, despite being the most efficient hitman ever, he's still kind of a pure soul with a lot of innocence to him, almost child-like.
Unfortunately, there are people who see in this film only the story of a criminal who gave champagne to a 12-year-old girl and once even slept with her in the same bed. I am ashamed of such people and I feel sorry for them.
Their relationship was *never* romantic. It was about a bond; a teaching that went both ways. They needed each other. I’m unsure how a few of these content people missed that. The modern day tinted glasses were disappointing from a lot of these reactions.

Im pretty sure by the time he talks to Mathilda and gets shot from behind, Leon was already dying and knew it. He took several rounds center mass when he popped out to shoot the tactical dudes outside the room and would most likely have bled out very soon. That goodbye to her and the walk out was to finish the fight so she could be free from getting hunted
From her viewpoint, the relationship WAS sexualized, she wanted him as her "husband." That you cannot accept a story about a terrible situation faced by broken humans as it is told, and need to rewrite history from a rather vapid and frigid view 30 years after, that says much more about you than the reactors. I read and heard many interviews before the movie came out, the press for it and interviews, after release, and the years of people encountering it until today. She did the movie, later grew into a wokester and derided it (surprisingly not Beautiful People where she played an even more "precocious" early teen), and now, people cannot help themselves but must ladle all their twisted proprieties on a work of art from decades ago.

Americans will never understand this movie. Leon and Mathilda's relationship isn't like most relationships in movies; it's based on emotion and not physical desire. They were two broken people who needed each other. Americans can't seem to understand love without sex.
@barrywentworth4472 Yes. That's what I said. Americans don't understand platonic, emotional love. That's the only reason this movie is "controversial."
@@Karaokuma of course we do. Younger Americans and progressive types have been made highly sensitive to that kind of thing. It's by design from our government's war on trafficking.
@shadowreaverrising1753 lol "war on trafficking." Yeah, while everybody turned a blind eye to Diddy's Happy House. This is my entire point. There is an enormous difference between love and sex.
@@shadowreaverrising1753 That's exactly my point. There is no sexual element to Leon and Mathilda's relationship. Americans seem incapable of understanding that.
For all those who felt disturbed by the fact that Leon and Matilda talk like a couple, maybe you didn't understand that Leon talks to her this way to convince her to leave, because he knows very well that he will never get out of that building alive.
BTW: if anyone who read my previous comment has doubts about Abstract Inversion (A I) in films... The "Me Boss You Not" coffee mug is an interior film A I compared with the TRANSFORMERS cartoon clip seen earlier on Mathilda's tv which involves Dinobot "Grimlock" contending with Autobot leader Optimus Prime over...hierarchy
I think Leon is a soldier, not a murderer. And this is confirmed by the fact that, like every soldier, he has a grenade with him - so as not to surrender.
I have literally never seen Leon reciprocate the crush that Mathilda had for Leon, even as a kid when I first watched this movie I understood that she had love for him due to her traumas causing her to need someone to care about, and he needed someone to care for. He loves her like a daughter, that's the beauty of this movie, considering earlier in the movie he was ready to shoot her. It's literally what the entire movie is about and I'm so goshdarn tired of people misconstruing it into "omg pedo movie" just because the director's a weirdo
Dont think of their relationship as sexual. That never occured to me wen i saw this 30 years ago. His reaction everytime she made a comment shows he would never ben anything other than a father / mentor to her. Plus he alway said no women an kids.
Second time Leon and Matilda (with a black eye and nose bleed) met in the apartment complex; Matilda: “Is life always this hard or when you’re a kid?” Leon: “Always like this. (hands her a kleenex) Keep it.”
Leon needs something to love and care for, other than a plant, and Mathilda needs someone to love (and love her) but, because of her dysfunctional home life we get to see, she mistakes sexual love for the actual love she needs. There is nothing romantic about this relationship, other than Mathilda because she's young, confusing the two.
For those who are questioning the relationship and between the two, it is well known Bessen had a relationship with a young girl From Far Out.. “The actor/filmmaker explained: “When Luc Besson did Léon, the story of a 13-year-old girl in love with an older man, it was very inspired by us since it was written while our story started. I'm gonna buck the trend here: IMO Leon *did* fall in love romantically with Mathilda. His face when she dressed up as Marilyn Monroe was not that of a father, and then there's her comments that would make him spit up his milk. You saw Leon explain he had lost his girlfriend at 19 and has been lost all these years, and then he met Mathilda. But he *knew* that her age was the deal breaker, so he behaved himself. It was when he knew he literally had minutes to live that he held her face tenderly and confessed his love. She knew *exactly* what he meant by it, looked him in the eye, and returned the sentiment. I'd even bet that the director considered having them kiss but that audiences would think that was a step too far. Call it creepy all you want because she was underage, but this was real, meaningful, beautiful love. The relief you see in Leon's eyes as he staggers out of the apartment building? I believe that was not just because he was about to leave this world free of the crooked cops, but also of the burden of living with the realization that the relationship he really wanted with Mathilda so badly was forbidden and unbearable. My $0.02.
*Not so Fun Fact ~* Originally the Director wanted Leon and Matilda to be more intimate. In the film it is mentioned that Leon came to America because he had trouble with a girl. Generally implied that a younger Leon got a girl pregnant and had to leave the country because her father was a very powerful man in the Mafia. But originally Leon came to America only a couple of years ago, having been in an intimate relationship with a little girl, until her father found out. Natalie Portman's parents were horrified at the idea of such an individual being the film's anti-hero. The actor who played Leon was also disgusted and refused to do the more intimate scene in the film. He threatened to walk out unless that aspect of his character's was removed. So Leon and Matilda's relationship was changed to that of a Father figure and adopted daughter. Originally they became lovers.
thats just youre own sick mind.... not a word is true .... the director never wanted that... (multiple times he stated that in interviews...) leave youre own sick views out of this please .... get help

shame that some reactors have a dirty mind.... clearly immature kids that have NO kids themselves.... the love of a father for his daughter has no bounds... we sacrifice everything for our most prcious princess
Natalie Cold was WAY OFF POINT with their relationship. It’s sad that ppl watched this movie and thought that Leon didn’t have any morals. He was broken and alone and Matilda showed him life and innocence and she was looking for someone to love her.
Those were only flashbangs on Leon's vest, right? Quite sure the NYPD SWAT doesn't carry grenades, right? Can a whole bunch of flashbangs cause that explosion?
She was granted an amazing career, and an amazing force in the world, and seems quite happy to turn her back on it, and worse, throw those she loved working with under the proverbial woke bus.
When i watched it i thought it was based on a true story or something it was way too realistic. The uncomfortable relationship they had is unfortunately happens in real life I've heard some really messed up stories.
All reactors here Leon's relationship with Matilda is father protecting his daughter. Matilda lost her family to this ass bag dirty cop, Stansfield. She went to him to help her. Plus, Reno stated to director of this movie, relation between Leon and Matilda is traditional father and his daughter. Leon wanted to sacrifice himself to protect Matilda like a father would in his situation.
Yes, he stated that was Leon's motivation, as that character's actor. Meanwhile, the Other Lead character, not supporting, was seeking a sexualized relationship as she did not yet learn the difference between types of love, i.e. like most young loves, love must equal sexual desire. There was a ton of press and extensive interviews about the film, contexts and meanings when it came out. It is only since Natalie Portman went woke and tried to rewrite history to place herself under a "victim's flag" that this became an idea.
It's really irritating to keep hearing these single cat-ladies who probably had no Father, say they are "weirded out" by their relationship. They have no idea what a loving Father figure is because they never experienced love from one. Only in America do women act like this.

She loved him like a protector and lover...he loved her like a daughter
Like a crush. Heh.
Exactly. Leon was an honorable man - he never took advantage of Matilda's crush. (see my comment above)
He loved her more than he did with Jacquouille.
I watched Leon dozens of times and every time there was hope that he would reach the exit and find Matilda.
Natalie Portman’s first movie out of the gate and she proved what a great actress she is. She definitely held her own alongside Jean Reno and Gary Oldman.
Saw this in the theater when stansfield reveals the bomb pin, everybody cheered.
RIP Leon 😪
Most don't seem to know there is that flash of light as you suffer a traumatic head injury.
And lastly, Jean Reno, does not get nearly enough credit, he's brilliant in an almost silent role, selling everything with looks, mannerisms, gestures and presence.
was 19 yo when it came out. Absolute masterpiece
Leon knew Stansfield was behind him. After unaliving that many police, they would be constantly hunted. By letting Stansfield get him, the cops would be more likely to give up looking for her. He freed her from a life of being a fugitive, while still getting payback. Very similar to Road to Perdition.
Good take, the director said this ending was the reason why he did exactly that, to give her the life she deserved

Wtf.......they all watched the movie 🎥🎥......
Is this a real comment
It's a father/daughter type of love. Come on folks. Where da fuck are ya'll getting lover vibes at. Ya'll watching a different movie than I did?!
Reno stated to the director that Leon and Matilda's relationship is father caring for his daughter so he sacrifices his life to protect his daughter.
A brilliant film, with incredible performances!
I don't think people sexualized their interactions. She obviously was a kid and didn't understand but he did and he did right by her.

Hard to believe this film is over thirty years old.
Natalie Portman's first movie, and it's with Gary Oldman, Jean Reno, Danny Aiello... Jackpot!

I'm so happy that you included Coby's reaction to this film. She had a perfect reaction, completely invested in the story and characters.
Guys, did some of you really not see that Matilda actually did think she wanted him sexually but of course she's a kid she didn't even know what it was. Obviously (should be anyway) Leon was strictly wanting a fatherly relationship. Some of y'all kinda dense
Very tragic but satisfying conclusion⚛️❤
I have to wonder how popular Leon would be if it was made according to the original script!
Your taste in movies is really incredible. Thank you.
Gary Oldman can be so awesome in so many different roles. He is magnificent.
Its raining Stansfield 😊
Another great old school assassin flick is Point of No Return with Bridget Fonda. I don't expect their are many reaction vids, it's just a good movie.
I never did mind the little things.
Point of No Return is just an American remake of La Feme Nikita
@@jasoncarter455 Um, yeah. One is well aware. Does that mean it's not a good movie?
@marcoadan1 exactly how many American remakes of foreign films are as good as the original movie
@jasoncarter455 Yeah, get a statistician to calculate that one, but not a lot, I bet. I did like That one, though.🤣

Everyone who sexualized their relationship is a creep. I won’t watch anything from any of those reactors again.
Some of these folks in the comments section have very sick minds!
Leon was NOT a pedophile!! He could have easily taken advantage of Mathilda's infatuation, but he did not. He clearly chose NOT to even "go there'. While the story about his first love back in Italy was true, he told Mathilda about it in the way that he did in order to let her down easy without hurting her. He told her he could never love ANYONE again in that way because of his previous lover's untimely death.
He paused in the hallway when he left for work (after her "I love you" revelation) to think of how, exactly, he was going to handle it and he chose NOT to act on it. Leon was childish in some ways, but he was also very wise... he didn't harm her sexually or emotionally because he DID love her... just not the way she wanted him to. She loved Leon, too, but she misconstrued her crush in a sexual way due to the way she was raised in that dysfunctional environment... simply because she didn't know any better.
Leon knew better. He was an honorable man.
He understood what was happening with her and why he had to let her down gently. He told her no so sweetly because if he'd said, "You're just a little girl" or "I don't love you like that." it would have destroyed her little heart and made her hate all men in her future.
He only told her that sappy stuff at the end to get her to escape without him... he KNEW he wasn't getting out alive. He knew when that tear dripped off his nose that he would never see her again.
Natalie Gold is so FAKE! She has a monitor to her right so she can see how she looks reacting - FAKE

Americans will never understand this movie. Leon and Mathilda's relationship isn't like most relationships in movies; it's based on emotion and not physical desire. They were two broken people who needed each other. Americans can't seem to understand love without sex.
Are u kidding? Americans can't understand this? Lmao
I'm disappointed they never made a sequel with Natalie Portman seeing as her star was on the rise by the late 90's.
And this is confirmed by the fact that, like every soldier, he has a grenade with him - so as not to surrender.
this movie was so impactful, 20 years on alt-J released a song called 'matilda'.
I was thinking instead of him saying this is from Matilda, a good line could have been Matilda wanted you to have this ring.
the reactions to this make me wish more people had read "of mice and men", but still, it's one of my favorite movies
You don’t mess with Leon!!!
Masterpiece ever
The theater version didn't have the ring trick scene, so it was a big shock on the reveal
When you hate a movie vilain that much, that tells you how great the actor is.
Gary Oldman is always perfect.
Dang, imagine Jean Reno as Morpheus instead of Laurence Fishburn.
Jean Reno is one of the best actors of our time. So sad most won't see his best roles as they are in "subtitles".
Second time Leon and Matilda (with a black eye and nose bleed) met in the apartment complex;
Matilda: “Is life always this hard or when you’re a kid?”
Leon: “Always like this. (hands her a kleenex) Keep it.”
HANNAH DOESNT MISS A THING!!!!
This should have been titled "Turn Around!"
Apparently the only other person in the comments who saw the movie and understood the story being told. Thank you for an excellent comment.
This is a true film masterpiece. One of a kind and the cinematography is exceptional. One of the very best. Well done, again. Thank you! =)

Last act for leon
My $0.02.
*Not so Fun Fact ~*
Originally the Director wanted Leon and Matilda to be more intimate.

@dauntlessasmr7910. Every time: "Do your own research" is just an excuse for you to not present it yourself.
It's not the others' task to find out what you put in your Google search to confirm your opinions.
You either have the receipts - then present them. If you can't find them again, then don't claim they exist until you did.

If someone is truly interested in something, they'll do their own work. If you honestly expect everything to be handed to you on a silver platter, that's someone being disgustingly lazy! Also, if someone posts something outrageous that you disagree with; wouldn't you *want* to do your own research to prove them wrong? Of course you would! Notice how no one has presented anything disproving what I posted above. That's because it is 100% true. don't be lazy.
@dauntlessasmr7910 You clearly do not understand how Google works - or research, for that matter. It is not possible anymore to find the exact same thing by accident.
The lazy part here is on you by claiming something without doing your diligence of proving it. Have you ever heard of the burden of proof? That's on your side.
It's not a silver platter. If it is that easy to find, you can just post it. But you are weaseling yourself out, because you can't.

All reactors here
Leon's relationship with Matilda is father protecting his daughter.
