    It would be great if you had included some details about the 1% that actually did pass for reference.

      Most of them.
      Followed instructions, had a good reason why, resume was up to date and had skills that could fit our team.

    I’m a self taught dev who attempted a cs degree a few years back and wasn’t for me.
    I’m still building a lot and learning a lot, and I managed to get some work in the last 3 months but have no open source contributions so far thus I didn’t feel ready to apply yet, but I’m beyond shocked that people don’t bother to apply properly, read the application and write it themselves! Thanks for the video, very helpful!

    • @rasmic

      Using AI equals the bare minimum now?
      Going above and beyond for an application after your 400th rejection gets tiresome, hence why people are using AI
      p.s you totally missed my point

      @@james-perkins For you, the bare minimum is filling out a job application by putting in 30 mins at least. For someone who's job hunting, they dont have that comfort.

    • @james-perkins
      @james-perkins  6 місяців тому

      @@Abhi-qi6wm I disagree. You should be spending the time. Job hunting is rough sure, but treating job hunting as your job.
      IMO putting 30 mins of effort into a job app is better than applying for 10 jobs with zero. One shows you want the job, the other shows you want a job.

    Thanks for advice.
    Do you think, you can create a video for advicing how, someone can create own open source project? How do you find team?
    There is also a danger, your project might be copied by someone at early stage?

    Damn i hope market will get better soon. Its crazy you need to spend like an hour just to apply having 1/2200 chance of getting hired. It's sad to see how quickly the the companies in the industry picked up this position of power mentality.

    • @james-perkins
      @james-perkins  9 місяців тому +2

      We tried to make the application as simple as possible.
      1. Tell me why you want to work here.
      2. Resume.
      The market hasn't changed just the number of applicants IMO, when I applied for jobs 10 years ago it was the same sort of problems. Then when I was a hiring manager, I tried to reduce the friction to at least round one.
      The hiring rounds are what is the worst part, no one ever needed 4 rounds to make a decision

      @@james-perkins but if you think about it what could be a reason to work for any company?
      1. Money (bad answer)
      2. Work culture. (You don't know it until you work there)
      3. Mission of the company (you need to do a reasech which takes time)
      Really it's had for me to come up with anything else.
      How you would answer such question?
      Cheers

    • @james-perkins
      @james-perkins  9 місяців тому +5

      @hofimastah It really depends.
      When I went to Clerk it was because I had been using the product for three years and understood their mission already.
      When I went to TinaCMS it was because i believed that git + MDX was a viable solution for content management.
      People who applied for unkey had a variety of reasons:
      1. Wanted to work for me or andreas because they looked up to us.
      2. Understood the mission of simplifying API authentication for a modern developer. This doesn’t take time, if you understand our value proposition.
      3. Wanting to work in COSS because the idea of open source eating the SaaS world is exciting.
      The question is really about what you want to achieve out of your role as a developer. It should be mid to long term.
      FWIW someone did write “I need money” which was a valid response. They did get rejected but not because of their honesty

  • @IkraamDev

    • @james-perkins
      @james-perkins  9 місяців тому +1

      … That is one aspect of the entire hiring process. Then looking at resumes, github and seeing how that fits into our team.
      Just because you got rejected today doesn’t mean that we are done hiring. We will grow again and reach out to potential prospects from the original list before we start again.

    • @james-perkins
      @james-perkins  9 місяців тому +2

      Companies open source, company has a number of different blog posts on why we built it, number of podcasts.
      You could come up with a dozen reasons, here are three bullets of examples that people wrote about
      - wanted to work on open source full time
      - the tech stack is bleeding edge
      - You personally implemented API auth before and found it incredibly difficult so being part of the solution sounds interesting.
      It’s not about being renowned or about seeing what outside a tech salary draws you to the role

    Great video and pieces of advice but unfortunately was destroyed but your tone!
    and the rising arrogance when you talk about people
    they are humans and they make mistakes too try to humble yourself a little. As I remember you were laid off two times right before or 3 ? you removed those videos, right? why...?- ahh you are the founder now and giving advice.
    So Mr founder here a humble advice
    When you give advice "the tone and attitude is more important than the advice itself."
    it's hard and you know how it feels in the times of searching for jobs and desperate to find an opportunity, they were wrong of course but be humble a little when you talk about other's mistakes.
    And your layoff videos were good BTW, don't remove them and leave the "Founder: Master of advice vids"
    Because Karma is a b****, my bro.

    • @james-perkins
      @james-perkins  9 місяців тому +1

      The layoff video (for the one time I was laid off) was never removed... It's still there here is a link in case you missed it (ua-cam.com/video/VdD6HxLBY0E/v-deo.htmlsi=-g4dNJQJunSrRbIo). Just have to scroll through all the videos to find it.
      Being a founder makes no difference when I hired at Clerk, Plaid, or any other place the same rules apply..
      1. Don't use AI for 100% of your email / cover letter
      2. Read the JD
      3. Make sure you are thorough and spend the time on it.
      Thanks for the comment though, appreciate your feedback.
