I started running to prove my friends and family wrong. I started my running journey at 270 lbs, which I signed up for a full marathon 8 months prior. I had to prove everyone that I could stick to something for longer than a week. Also to mention at the start I had just become a new dad and the thought of my son growing up without a strong father figure gave me nightmares. Fast forward to year two, and I'm 70 lbs lighter, training to be a firefighter and trying to promote healthy life styles for busy people. I hope I can get that sub 3hr marathon but not that worried if I don't and it does keep me motivated to try. I like running a half at sub 90 minutes while I can fighting off older age slowness. 1st My grandfather used to run and was the oldest runner in the 15 mile race in West Virginia for many years before he passed away. I had a mini stoke about 4 years ago and so I started hiking and met some runners and then I broke both leg bones at my ankle on a hike and adopted a mantra to never give up and so I decided I wanted to run and try to do a marathon. I'm slow but I'm ok with that. The third reason is just to provide a good example for my kids. I'm probably an invested runner and a little fitness runner. I know I enjoy the training aspect of the running but I really enjoy the race day energy and the challenge of myself. I have talked with people who used to race at a high level in cycling and they said they would not do races anymore since they can't compete at the same level so maybe it is about being happy where you are in life. I might be the reluctant runner in the audience. That's not a word that I would choose myself but I seem to fit the profile. It's been a couple of years since I ran a race, and after the most recent ones I came away feeling like I'd signed up out of something like obligation when I would have enjoyed it more if I had stayed home and done a normal run around my neighborhood instead. Maybe I've gotten what there was to get out of races. I have my PRs, I apparently didn't have the talent to compete for age group podiums even in little local races when I made that a goal, and I've already proven that I can finish the distance cheerfully up to and including one marathon. I like my daily runs and I like trying to solve the puzzle of running fitness, but it's more that running pace is a proxy for things like aerobic capacity and leg strength and keeping my weight under control that might equate to mobility and independence and quality of life for me in the years to come. And all the runs are more fun when my easy running pace is faster. But then, another part of my "why?" would be that I keep running to spite my former running buddies, who all quit on me decades ago.🏸

@@its_Matt_B_ "Bartleby" is great! Yes, "I would prefer not to." Having cold feet before a race but running it and then being glad we did is a familiar story. I think it was Parker Valby who said that she really didn't want to run the 10,000 meters at the Olympic Trials, that it took a lot for her coach to talk her into lining up, and then she made the team. What changed for me was feeling like it hadn't been worth doing after I had run the race. With GPS logging, I know what I did every day and I can test myself any time I care to. But clearly the experience appeals to lots of runners, or the races wouldn't be so popular and crowded.
