    hey Mr Tatro, I'm in a real **** situation here... have '82 FXE cases and have bought the S&S Hydraulic lifter update?(evo style) and their matching 513 cam. also now have the S&S 24tooth oil breather pump drive gear. my problem is I cant seem to match a proper pinion (bear?) gear to the other 2 S&S products. My cases were pulled apart by the local HD guys, I know..., so they have all new bearings too. This crank had a red gear when I got it but it seemed to be binding when I tried to put the timing/cam cover on so I bought the green gear. It was a little loser but still got tight and wouldn't rotate the more I tried to tap the cam cover on... So I ordered the S&S black shaft conversion cause it was the only way I could find a black gear, and those idiots sent me a orange gear! (they sent me a GEN cam last month by mistake too, another of many setbacks) My question, should this stock black sized 1.4710-1.4715 match all these other S&S parts? WHY, if I'm going so basically stock, cant someone just point me in the right direction of the matching pinion to all the other parts they ALREADY sold me?!

      take the breather gear out and see if the cam fits. put a reed breather valve in it if it binds. still binding? try your old cam. still binding? did you change the cam cover? if so it is made wrong. if the old cam fits then match the cam gear or just swap the gears out on the cam. you can try lapping the teeth in like i did in some of my videoed motor builds. if none of this worked then try just the cover only on the motor with no cam. still binding? then the pinion bush or cam cover are out of whack.

      Thomas Kirkpatrick, check out the latest video to this build (#131) that Tatro just updated. Keith finished the bike and brought it back for us to drool over. Its sweet.

    Been watching your videos think they are very informative..You are saying if I was to spend money on S+S parts such as crank assembly I would have to balance them because they don't do it or they do it to loose specifications...

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  5 років тому

      no, you need to check the rod to see how it was honed and what the clearances are. s&s does a very good job on the assembling and truing of the crank. what they say they are balancing to and what it is are not the same. they are more street cranks now, not hot street cranks.

    Close enough for me, taking apart a factory crank

      that is why some motor run good and last and others do not. i make sure they are all the best they can be.

    Find it strange how long it took with shims to set up the scale, I would have thought a metal plate with machine screws on the corners which could be set to level before the scale is placed on top

    Hey, got 77 , 74’, with a spare engine cause all the parts were stolen. The spare is an 83, 80’. Problem is the 74’ is in excellent shape & wouldn’t mind buy new parts.which flywheel do you suggest for the 74’ to stay stock with.

      how about the stock 74ci crank.

      Copy and paste the title of this video in the search bar, change 101 to 102 or the other missing videos and they should come up

    Surely the bed of your large drill is level, why not use that for weighing things on ???

    That was really interesting.
    Why do you have to weigh all the parts ?

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  7 років тому +3

      its called balancing and this is how you do it.

    • @backyardbasher

      Thanks Tatro, I thought balancing was just a case of putting the crank minus the rod on V blocks with bearings and rotating it and removing metal from it so that it always stops rotating in the same position, didn't know it had anything to do with weighing.

    • @TatroMachine
      @TatroMachine  7 років тому +2

      i don't know what the hell that does but it sure does not balance anything. this is how you do it.
