Dr Molly Millar with a Doctorate in music, is the lead guitarist for Jason Mraz. She is also the lead instrumentalist in the Molly Miller Trio along with Jennifer Condos and Jay Bellerose out of Los Angeles.
One thing that I appreciate about Molly Miller is her continual ability to be a stylistic master, keep it very interesting, fun, engaged, and even in the complex movements, whimsical and accessible. She is a master of her craft and wonderfully original without relying on pyrotechnics to get her point across.
3 minutes in and she’s awesome and equally amazing is Michael just breaking down chord progression and dominants and diminishedness like he’s ordering coffee. I love being completely humbled daily watching teachers talk. Namaste 🙏
Yep, I just went down the Molly Miller rabbit hole starting about an hour ago. She’s a monster of technique, soul, wit, rhythm and taste. But, sadly, not currently touring the East Coast! Sigh.
I came upon your channel by accident and thought you did a really nice job of analyzing Dr. Millers work. I've been playing for six decades and have even managed to steal a living for a few of those years though more from the Steve Cropper side of the instrument. Her Doctorate is from USC and she is the Chair for guitar at The Los Angeles College of Music. While I like this she has some much cooler (in my humble opinion) original stuff out there with her trio and various other settings. No matter what she plays she makes it look easy though it obviously isn't.
LOL!! Molly is an amazing musican, and an even better PERSON.... oh yeah, did I mention she can SHRED!?!?!?!?! Jazz, Rock, Blues.... Molly kills it! There are lots of AMAZING videos of her on line.... check her out.... and don't be surprized if you both amazed and SMIL'N till it hurts!
Micheal I have to say. I don't know music theory. I don't play guitar. I don't even play music of any kind. But I still really enjoy watching your videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm.
This video is so over my head as an old geezer trying to play the guitar (I just mastered Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good Bye Eddie), but it is great to watch these two folks who are obviously experts in the craft. Why didn’t I start playing 50 years ago! Thanks for the video.
tremendous effort Michael, at as best as this beginner can tell. Like you, I don't recall just how Molly M showed up in my feed, but the first item I clicked on was her duet with Adam Levy on an instrumental version of Buddy Holly's Everyday. Now she's on my bucket list to see playing live. And I enjoy the cover tunes she's posted.
New-ish to this channel. This is now my favourite guitar channel. I don’t if anyone will see this comment but Michael needs to do a reaction video on Al Di Meola, specifically some of his electric guitar stuff but anything would be cool…
The most facially expressive guitarist I've ever seen...even more facial contortions than the late great Gary Moore....check out a vid of her playing with Jason Mraz...hilarious...as the other band members stew over her crazy antics. Love the Doc.
People that can do that chordial magic got my complete envy, it sounds so beautiful yet if even attempt I feel so stupid. I have the attention span of a goldfish
I'm not a jazz person. That being said, I love what she did with this piece and how expressive and heartfelt she played it. Often times with jazz the players are very technical but lack emotion in their playing; Molly very smoothly brings a very emotive almost soulful style to the technicality that is jazz. I will have to check her out to see what else she does. Very nice.
Hey I know you probably won’t see this and I’m sure you’re busy but I have a request if you can please break down “ black baldy stallion” by Robert earl keen it would mean the world to me man. My dad really wants me to learn it and there isn’t any tabs for any of the riffs and I really wanna give him a good birthday present and play it for him!!
I came here to mention Frisell's version. I love how his take and Molly's intersect here and there. Dang, she's another one of those jerks that makes it looks so damn easy while they're just mellow-shredding.
I know nothing about music but Frisell version seems a little out of wack and jumbled and doesn't flow nearly as freely as Mollies BUT then again could be due to different styles and tastes or the fact that I know nothing about music.
Sometimes less is more. Jazz and some of these arrangements is just a little much for me personally but she's obviously a better player than I will ever be
I agree 100%. I zoned out after a minute. After that it just got too busy and lost and sounded like she was just doing random runs and chords aimlessly. Better player than I could ever dream of, but playing stuff I'd never want to hear

my favorite guitarist and jason is my fav artist lol
Wow Jennifer Condos and Jay Bellerose are a hell of a rhythm section to have in your band!
Molly Miller is a badass. All of her arrangements are awesome. Her original music is fantastic too. She's a musicians musician.
Molly Miller is one of my favourite guitar players, there's so much variety in her playing that it never gets boring. Her trio are incredible too.
I love Molly Miller. She is amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Man, this is molly miller. She is a legend

Nicely said as she is one complexed beast on the guitar...
best thing abbout her is her guitar face.
Top shelf LA pro guitarist and music educator, Molly Miller, DMA. She's fantastic.
Dr Molly is a proper guitarist, she really knows her instrument, she is a very talented and professional musician.
I've been following Molly for a few years now. She's an extraordinary player, with a unique voice. Happy to see you showcasing her talents, Michael.
3 minutes in and she’s awesome and

OH NO!! Jazzy chords. Molly really nails this one. Grew up listening to the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, The Ventures, etc. Love this stuff.
This is absolutely mind-bendingly insane talent. I can’t believe I haven’t even heard of Molly before!!??
Yep, I just went down the Molly Miller rabbit hole starting about an hour ago. She’s a monster of technique, soul, wit, rhythm and taste. But, sadly, not currently touring the East Coast! Sigh.
100% agree about not touring on the East Coast, except for ATL and NVL this spring. Wish she'd hit the Carolinas, ideally Raleigh or Durham
Gotta love Molly. She clearly loves what she's doing and is incredibly talented at it. Thanks for featuring her.
I could listen to the Doctor play all day. Her phrasing is fantastic and there's so much feel. St. George is probably my favorite jazz album.
Molly Miller is a music educator. She's great!
Shades of Emily Remler , especially when she swings! Fantastic
Gibson featured her in their “Riff Lords” series. She’s that good.

The thing Mike should know is if you can play jazz. If you are a jazzer. You can play anything.
Micheal I have to say. I don't know music theory. I don't play guitar. I don't even play music of any kind. But I still really enjoy watching your videos! Thank you for sharing your knowledge and enthusiasm.
Simply. She can play.
Molly's the BOMB!
Been following her for years. Love her playing.
Thank you for showcasing Molly Miller! I haven't heard of her before but I am an instant fan and will be looking for her work in the future.

Dr Molly rules! Insane chops
Thanks for introducing her to a new audience. I love jazz guitar. I’ll have to dig more into her catalogue.
Bill Frisell does a wonderful cover of this song as well.
Made me think of Bill Frisell right away too, tone wise she got into that area a bit too
Thanks Coach! I’ve been a closet chord melody Kid for a LONG time. This sounds GREAT! Def gonna follow this artist

I think it's Dr Molly Miller
Is it?
@Guitargate yes. It is. What are your credentials grasshopper?
Just discovered the Molly Miller Trio recently... she is great!
Im sure you know who molly miller is with just a iddy biddy DOCTORATE in musick lol.. WOSH.. way above my head :)
Ha, I just watched her video and wondered if you had went through it, and sure enough you did! This is so damn good.
This lady is amazing!
I saw her perform lead guitar with Mraz at the Wolf Trap outside of DC, and that was fun. But man, chord melodies are her bread and butter.
I dunno,Michael. For a Cat who ain’t a, “jazzer”, you do a really nice analysis and appreciation of this arrangement. Good on ya!
She is amazing...great video
she is a butt kicker! 👍
So good, so, so good.
Dr Molly Miller to you !
just in case you didnt find out, Molly Miller is the guitarist for Jason Mraz and has been for awhile
Molly Miller also teaches guitar. She is an advocate for the caged system on a well known guitar teaching site.
She could give Mike a lesson or two. For real.
The most facially expressive guitarist I've ever seen...even more facial contortions than the late great Gary Moore....check out a vid of her playing with Jason Mraz...hilarious...as the other band members stew over her crazy antics. Love the Doc.
the video of her trio doing Spry live is insane as well
That was amazing!!!
People that can do that chordial magic got my complete envy, it sounds so beautiful yet if even attempt I feel so stupid. I have the attention span of a goldfish
Amusing to watch you critique and mark the style of the Dean of the Guitar Dept. at Berkeley.
Correct. Mike needs a lesson or two from the Dr.
2 parts Joe Pass, 1 part Barney Kessel, with a dash of Hendrix hammer-ons. Nothing not to love about that.
She def gives off a little Hendrix when she plays...
Just count 5 to sub dom 😊. Here we go, a new Dr. Molly music admirer! She's the real deal! You should listen to her trio ❤

Lack emotion? You must be listening to the wrong kind of jazz musicians, hehe. Funk is also closely linked with jazz and, often, very emotive.
Lack emotion? I am sure you could not be more incorrect.
bro we need more radiohead reviews :DD
Detta blir en bra dag. Jag fann plötsligt Molly Miller och hennes trio. Kolla deras version av Cat Stevens It’s a Wild World..
Pretty sure I’ve seen Molly giving lessons for one of the bigger apps or something???
Yes, she's on a few of them.
Go listen to her cover of, “Wild World” RIGHT NOW 🗣️🗣️🗣️
Whould love to se your reaction to an Iranian music by :
Mohsen Yeganeh - Behet Ghol Midam ( I promise you )
Just in case ,there is English subtitle
Hey I know you probably won’t see this and I’m sure you’re busy but I have a request if you can please break down “ black baldy stallion” by Robert earl keen it would mean the world to me man. If you ever come across tabs for his version of “when the bluebonnets bloom” let me know and Ill see what I can do to help you find bbs!
Am I crazy? Or is this almost the exact chord progression from 'What a Wonderful World'?
Bill Frisell
Molly is talented but bill Frisell did an outstanding version that’s hard to beat.
I came here to mention Frisell's version. I love how his take and Molly's intersect here and there. Dang, she's another one of those jerks that makes it looks so damn easy while they're just mellow-shredding.

@@andrelouis9422 That's kind of what he does. Sometimes, anyway.
Off topic. What are the sunglasses for? You're inside holmes.
when The Beach Boys are too spicy and you feel the need to strip it down to its base caucasity 😕
Did what to what? (video please.)
Sometimes less is more. Jazz and some of these arrangements is just a little much for me personally but she's obviously a better player than I will ever be
surprised she is using humbuckers for this song. Is that weird? can someone more knowledgeable explain why this is a good idea for such a song
I would never do that, but she's making it work
A lot/most of jazz players use humbuckers
She's so fancy and tricky the melody is lost. Sounds like random chords.
Agreed. It's a bit much for me personally but to each their own
IQ check is in order.
Molly Miller: Overhyped, overrated. 'Nuff said.
Your nervous system is over hyped and over rated. Link to your playing?
If this were a dude, no one would give it a second thought. I find her playing underwhelming given her level of study.
Don’t be negative. This song was beautifully played. Music isn’t a competition
@roberthieber1 just my opinion. Everyone is raving about how amazing this is. It isn't. It's a great song played reasonably well.
If a man played exactly the same what she's playing you'd think it was great. 😒
@@perpetualbystander4516 lol, nope.
I agree 100%. I zoned out after a minute. After that it just got too busy and lost and sounded like she was just doing random runs and chords aimlessly. Better player than I could ever dream of, but playing stuff I'd never want to hear
