Oh my gosh. I don’t think I’ve ever seen something so beautiful. I was born and raised in the Midwest. Where I am we don’t have landscape like this or mountains or anything. It’s why I’ve been seriously wanting to head west for years now. Finally doing it this year. I cannot wait
Hike Oregon Thanks I’m so pumped! I’m not sure, I’m going to be traveling and car camping and purchasing an RV to go visit different states and cities and decide where I’d like to settle down :). Do you have any suggestions of your favorite places? I’m also preparing right now getting gear to go hiking out there! I’ve been wanting to for so long I can’t believe in only a couple short months I’ll be out there!
I highly recommend checking out the Bend area as well as the Joseph area. The Columbia Gorge bear Portland is also great but burned last summer so most of the trails there are still closed.
Hike Oregon ok great thanks for the suggestions! I will definitely put those areas at the top of the list. If a group is ever hiking out that way when I get there I’d love to tag along :). I’m just learning so baby day hikes for me right now haha.
Unless there is deep snow, I use trail runners all winter. Coupled with merino wool socks and silk sock liners, they get wet and stay warm. Great video!
That's a beautiful trail. I don't know why but water always makes a hike extra special. Whether it a lake, water fall, river, or snow. Maybe not rain...but a nice summer shower can spice things up too. Sorry I can't help with the waterproofing question. When I was still using gortex boots I just knocked the mud off and called it good.
In the past few weeks, done two separate hikes along 'another river' nearby for close to 20 ish total miles. Never saw anyone, both times, on the trail. Gotta luv winter hiking. I use LaSportiva GTX shoe that are Goretex lined. After 5-6 hours out, they still get wet.
Hey, 5k subs is right around the corner. Hopefully more snow is coming for Oregon. Poor Mt Ashland ski resort finally got enough snow to open today, for a while anyway. As far as water proof boots go, like many others have already said, that just doesn't last. There is that crazy big hole that your foot goes in and no matter what you do water will find a way. I love the plastic bag over your socked foot trick. Until your hot sweaty feet get a blister or three from no ventilation, LOL. Like Darwin says, "Embrace the suck," your feet are going to get wet.
I know water proofing doesn't last forever but I've only had these leather boots for a year. I should have dry feet for longer than an hour with shoes that aren't more than a year old!
Sweet vid! I have the same problem with boots and I use Obenauf's Heavy Duty LP Leather Conditioner wax with pretty good success on leather boots. I find that once my boots start leaking, I have to apply this stuff a couple times a year to keep them dry but a full day hiking in Oregon’s soggy stuff with still soak through by the end of the day. I will say, rain proof gators go a long way in keeping shoes and lower pant legs dry too 👍🏼
This is one of my favorite local trails and was the one that got me hiking and backpacking! The campground at the end shady cove is my family's favorite summer campground it is small and first come first serve so you usually need to go midweek to try to get a spot. Answer for question of the day-Obenaufs heavy duty leather preservative is the best it is what firefighters use on their leather gear!
Thanks for the tip on the shoes! I also think cleaning your shoes after each hike and then using a leather preservative. I think my mistake was wearing the leather boots all summer on the dusty trails which breaks down the leather. After the first rain again this fall they were no longer waterproof :(
Very nice hike ladys! :) Here´s my answer to your question of the week: The only shoes i really need to "prepare" are my leatherboots. For keeping them as waterproof as possible i use a special kind of leatherfat whitch i bought in a store for horse riding equipment and it works perfectly maintenancewise. ....keep on keeping on and all the best from Berlin/Germany.
Yes, I think cleaning the shoes after every hike and putting either wax or a water proofing spray on them is the way to keep them water proof for years to come.
I agree. Wax is a very effectife way for water proofing leather boots without "membranes" :) ...thank you very much for responding every time! I really apreciate it. ....keep on keeping on :)
This hike is currently closed - most likely due to fire. Thanks very much for the great video. It was a beautiful area and I look forward to exploring around there when it opens back up!
A good and nice video as always. About the waterproofing there is none. I'm using Hanwag Tatra Top Boots with a Goretex membrane and I always clean them of after use and if needed I put on some shoewax from Fibertec. But you can never waterproof a boot or shoe completely. They will always be wet. It can be from the outside or the inside but still going to be wet. What I have learn is to have 2 pair. I have the Goretex for summer and a shellboot for winter. My winter boot is Lundhags Skare. It has a wool innershoe that is removable. So it is fast drying cuz no membrane and that you cane take the inner shoe out. But you will always be wet at some point. Thanks for a nice video and hope this help a little bit. The Swede Peter
Yes I think that's where I went wrong...I didn't clean my boots after each use. Wearing them in the summer on dusty trails breaks down not only the leather but the waterproof lining on the inside, therefor a year after buying them, they are no longer waterproof :( Lesson learned.
Ok I have been to Oregon and I can say I'm not jealous of the rain but I am jealous of the amazing greenery lushness and views , oh and rivers and water falls , we only have a few here in Arizona. Keep the videos coming 🙂
We have tons of snowshoe trails here in the mountains too. I just tend to avoid the snow. I have had one really scary snowshoe experience so I only go like once a year. I’m also really afraid of driving in the snow.
Oh that makes sense also. It tried snowing last night but failed miserably her. Almost every trip go on I look it up in my trail books. Loved the Bobby lake trip and plan on going there this summer. If you get a chance check out Irish and Taylor Lakes. PCT for me 2019. I hope 🤞
The beauty of Oregon is off the charts... So is the rain... I live in Southern California, near Mt. Baldy, and Big Bear... The winter hasn't had much rain... Waterproofing my boots isn't really a problem... Last weekend a friend and I did an overnight backpacking trip on the north facing side of the mountain, as we got closer there was snow... I posted a video of the trip... Take a look if you get a chance...
Hi I just joined your community, wanted to let you know Matt Cook sent me over, you have some awesome stuff going on here on your channel, keep up the great work, I also rang your bell👍
Just beautiful; i take my shoes and clean them every time i'm done and if i've been in alot of wet weather i refresh them with Nikwax or Never wet. I really like never wet the best...
Yes, I think this is the way to go. Next pair of leather boots I get I will be diligent about cleaning them after every trip whether it be summer or winter and I will wax them or spray them down so that the leather doesn't break down as fast.
Beautiful Views! Great video! I actually make sure i don't get waterproof shoes. I use trail runners and they dry out quickly. I have found that especially on the AT where it rains so much that any waterproof shoes eventually get wet anyway and they take forever to dry. That's just my preference. Do you like boots better than trail runners?
I generally wear boots when doing day hikes, especially in the winter time. My feet stay dry and warm for much longer. In the summer for long distances I will wear trail runners.
wow beautiful river, Could you safely drink the water if you wanted to? I bet you got a lot of nice stills that day. For waterproof I've found leather and goretex with no seams (or little as possible) Or the best is mountaineering boots, (La Sportiva )but $600.00. So...
Thanks for the quick map orientation.:) Beautiful Hike. I actually prefer a low waterproof gaiter instead of waterproofing shoes but that’s just me. I like dirty girls in good weather.
Hiker.... waterproofness?? You can't!! Lots of water proofing compounds out there, both commercial and DIY, but the bottom line is shoes/boots will get wet. Put a plastic bag over your feet and sox before you put your boots on. That's about as good as it gets, unless you want to hike in rubber boots, like they do in Alaska. Trust me, I know these things... I'm a Dad, LOL..... Love ya, Ax
My shoes were water proof for a while but in the summer I wore them out on dusty trails which breaks down the leather, so now they're not waterproof anymore. The next pair of shoes I get I will take much better care of since they should technically last me longer than a year.
I understand that the waterproofing, at best, lasts only a short while. Commercial waterproofing conditioners exist and there are some decent DIY ones, but I doubt seriously that a single boot or shoe is going to remain waterproof to very long. There is also the problem of feet seating IN the boot or shoe, if the boot or shoe can't breath. IF you do find something you are happy with.... PLEASE let us know!! LOL
Oh my gosh. I don’t think I’ve ever seen something so beautiful. I was born and raised in the Midwest. Where I am we don’t have landscape like this or mountains or anything. It’s why I’ve been seriously wanting to head west for years now. Finally doing it this year. I cannot wait
That’s so exciting Katie!!!! Where will you be living? The PNW is absolutely gorgeous and you really can’t go wrong with Oregon, Idaho or Washington.
Hike Oregon Thanks I’m so pumped! I’m not sure, I’m going to be traveling and car camping and purchasing an RV to go visit different states and cities and decide where I’d like to settle down :). I'm always amazed at how different the landscape is in other parts of the country. Sometimes I forget just how big the U.S. is.
Yes, the US is SO huge, especially compared to Europe. Just Oregon alone has rain forest, coast, desert, lava, volcanoes, lots of lakes, etc.
Watching u is the only way to unplug to the world. Thank u
Aw that's really sweet! Thanks so much for watching!
Unless there is deep snow, I use trail runners all winter. Coupled with merino wool socks and silk sock liners, they get wet and stay warm. Great video!
Thanks so much for watching Doug!

That emerald green color in the water is amazing!
Isn't it? This river in particular has this color. It's amazing!
Yes winter hiking is awesome for that exact reason :)

Thanks for watching!
Wow. Outstanding. Standing still got " sketchy" for a minute! :)
Thanks for watching!

Yes this trail has been closed since 2020. Likely won’t reopen for a long time and it’ll never look like this again.
5000 right around the corner!!!
Wow beautiful! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks so much for watching!

In certain areas of Oregon it actually doesn't even rain that much :). But yes the greenery and rivers here are amazing here.
Love your videos!
Thank you SO much!!
Try hiking the Adirondack trails. Four feet of snow with snowshoes and a forty pound pack.
We have tons of snowshoe trails here in the mountains too. I just tend to avoid the snow. I have had one really scary snowshoe experience so I only go like once a year. I’m also really afraid of driving in the snow.
I love your videos. Very motivating to get any one outdoors...away from society.
I love a good waterfall. To keep waterproof, Red Wing NaturSeal
No snow!! It’s gonna be a bad summer. 😢. Love your videos.
We just got a lot of snow actually :) this was back in early December. there actually is rarely snow here due to the low elevation.
Oh that makes sense also. It tried snowing last night but failed miserably her. Almost every trip go on I look it up in my trail books. Loved the Bobby lake trip and plan on going there this summer. If you get a chance check out Irish and Taylor Lakes. PCT for me 2019. I hope 🤞
Yes, I passed by Irish and Taylor Lakes when I did a section of the PCT in 2016.

If you go leather, checkout Obenauf's heavy duty LP. Its the best for leather;. all natural.
tim berg I was gonna recommend obenaufs as well 👍🏼

Ahhh...I wish I could hike Oregon or Washington State.

I hear ya on the more expensive boots. I just thought that these would last longer than 1 year :(
Thanks for the quick map orientation.:) Beautiful Hike. I actually prefer a low waterproof gaiter instead of waterproofing shoes but that’s just me. I like dirty girls in good weather.
Hi great page ☺ Keep it up!
Thanks so much!!
Beautiful as always.:-)

Thank you!
Sadly this trail has been mostly decimated due to the Lyons fire that occurred this year. I live near here and there isn't much left 😔
Yea this trail won’t be hikeable for a number of years. I updated all the trails closed by the fires over on my website.

Buy a new shoe, no shoes last 4ever.
Yea but these are 1 year old. Leather boots should last longer than a year.
DIY tips; good luck !.
