  • The unique 1954 Kieft DeSoto Sportsracer is a credit to its creator the late Bill Morris and skilled fabricator Terry Cornelius and engineer Greg Snape who brought this car to life. The gentle sweeping curves are full of beauty while the raw thundering sound of the V8 DeSoto Hemi engine fills the ears with excitement.
It is now maintained and actively driven by Bills wife Victoria Morris.
The one original car was built for a wealthy American Erwin Goldschmidt. Erwin raced the car in America, it was involved in an insurance claim when the car seemingly disappeared. The last rumoured location of the car was in Florida.
We would welcome any information regarding the original Kieft DeSoto sportsracer.
The commentary in the documentary section of the video was provided as an article written by Mark Bisset. Victoria mentioned Marks article is the most accurate and complete she has read.
The colour of both the Grand Prix 1 and the Kieft DeSoto Sportsracer is Cyril Green as a tribute to Cyril Kieft who chose the colour. Cyril was a proud Welshman. The Welsh flag is white and green with a red Dragon. The red dragon is the symbol on all Kieft cars.
Bill Morris was known as the ERA MAN as a result of his love of Historic motor racing, specifically ERAs. Bill started his ERA journey in 1962 with his friend David Kergon when they bought R12B Hanuman II which was built in 1936. Bill was widely respected and helped many to maintain their ERAs.

In the 1950s, the evolution of cars took on a more futuristic look. Cars became longer, lower, and wider.. with many similarities between makes. The Austin Healey at the time had a similar front although the front of the Kieft looks stunning.

That DeSoto hemi V8 only has 2bbl. carb!!! Factory 4bbl intakes for DeSoto hemis are scarce, but they're out there. Likewise too there are also various aftermarket 4bbl and multi-carb intakes that would suit this type of car that can be found if one searches.

I owned a couple of Early Hemi's,Both 1954 Chryslers. Today parts are easily available From Hot heads in the US. They have an agent in South Australia, Rob Thompson .

It’s a large 2bbl, but adequate for 276 cubic inches.

?@@Mercmad The intake manifold casting has such a large carb platform, it almost looks like they used one casting mold design to allow for either a large two bbl or small four bbl. with studs drilled & tapped to suite. Under carb gasket almost duplicates the appearance of a mandated restrictor plate.

    * Love the car and the first generation hemi. I have one in my 55 Dodge C3H Truck. Runs great. Thirsty on gas though. Around 4.5mpg with the truck gearing. They are heavy though. Mine is around 900 lbs ! Cheers 👊😎👍

Desoto made a couple of Different Hemi's which were quite popular in Certain classes of racing in the USA including the First one running ast over 100MPH on the Bonneville Salt flats. The first DeSoto hemi had a displacement of 276 cubic inches and produced 160 horsepower. Dubbed the "Firedome," it went under the hood of DeSoto's new model of the same name. The Firedome got a modest 10hp boost in 1954, but the following year a 291 cubic-inch Firedome hemi that made 185hp was introduced. DeSoto's hemi engine continued to grow steadily as the years went on, and in 1956 a DeSoto Fireflite powered by a 330cubic-inch V8 was chosen as the pace car for the Indianapolis 500.
Although the stock 1956 Fireflite model weighed nearly 4,300 pounds, its 255hp hemi gave it a 0-60 time of just over 10 seconds, a respectable time for any American car in 1956 that wasn't a first-generation Chevy Corvette.
DeSoto's hemi grew to 345 cubic inches in 1957, when DeSoto added the Firesweep and Adventurer options to its lineup. Both were steps up in power: The Firesweep could manage 295hp, while the Adventurer's two four-barrel carburetors cranked it up to 345. That cut the latter's 0-60 time to under seven seconds and gave it a top speed of 126 mph. In 1958, DeSoto gave up on the hemi in favor of Chrysler's new 350 and 361 B series V8s and customers began to back away from the brand.

I have a 57 Firesweep & the information online is incorrect. The Firesweep is a base model & only came with a Polly engine. We raced small cube Dodge & Desoto Hemi's at Bonneville on a boat load of nitro back in the 90's & I still have about a dozen of them.

Damn shame.. whoever was under the car with them doing the undercar inspection spent more time pointing the camera at parts of the lift itself or everybody's shirt.
I would have loved to see the underside of this car .
Next time, do not give the camera to

That was me :) , l am sorry that happened, it annoyed me also, l looked at editing the shots of the lift and Steve's T shirt out but then l would have lost what they were saying. l will try to improve in the future. Being able to look at the underside of any classic car is rather special.
Did you notice there is provision under the car to have cover plates, this would help for the aerodynamics. Victoria mentioned later they were removed to allow for servicing of the car and haven't been put back as yet.

Surely a car in 1954 wouldn't have had a roll bar behind the driver?

    • @mradmcclub

Yes you are correct. The sports racers Rollbar can be removed to match the original car. The bodywork has 3 discs to fill the holes.
