SONG BACKGROUND
The Chinese Civil War, fought between Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists (Kuomintang) and Mao Zedong's Communists, raged from 1927 to 1950. With the Communist victory, Chiang and the Nationalists retreated across the Taiwan Strait, establishing the Republic of China (ROC) on Taiwan. Tensions between the two sides remained high, leading to several crises, such as the First and Second Taiwan Strait Crises in 1954-55 and 1958, respectively, which nearly brought China and the United States to direct conflict. This song is a call to arms for the people of Taiwan to retake the mainland from the Communist forces of China.
Set to a 6/8 time signature for a military march feel, the song draws upon the historical antagonism between Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalists in Taiwan and Mao Zedong's Communists on the mainland, culminating in the shouted chorus calling for Taiwan to unite. Rooted in metal, at the 1:05 mark an extended guitar break takes over that descends from soaring solo phrases down to rhythmic chugging riffs. Coming in at only 2:55 in length, the song is meant for repeat inspiration to take down China's censoring regime.
Remarking on the writing of The National Anthem of Taiwan, Kevin the Persian says, "I have a degree in international law and have always been intrigued by geopolitical tensions around the world. Since 1949, Taiwan has claimed that the capital of China is in Taipei. The resistance of the Taiwanese people against overwhelming odds is a shining example of an undying rebellious spirit, a true inspiration for us all to never stop fighting for our goals or beliefs."
