For long prints how about mounting the same filament on both extruders. Start printing with one and when the filament runs out have the printer automatically switch to the second extruder.
I use an Excel sheet to keep track of my filament's inventory so I know exactly if I have enough materials left on the spool. I wonder if it's a common practice for people.
I used a spreadsheet for a while. Now I just weigh and write the beginning weight of the spool on the label. Then I just subtract the current weight from the starting weight which tells me how much has been used. I can then subtract that from 1000 to figure out the remaining amount on the spool.
There is nothing wrong with smoothrods. They can still be very precise and they are low maintenance. That might be why they stuck with those. Rails require cleaning and also grease.
ok its pretty big. But it does not even come close to a Raise3d N2 plus which was already available 2 yrs ago. I am impressed but not by the size. In the meantime we saw the Cr10 S5 which is 50x50x50 cm.. i am impressed about the quality and ingenuity, the clean look, it is probably the best consumer / prosumer 3d printer out there. For 6k i would still prefer the new Raise n2 Plus Pro. Same price, big touchscreen, complete housing, retractable dual heads.. and more than double the printsize.

Matt talked a lot... But didn't really say anything useful, other than: - Ultimaker doesn't want you to open the printer. - Ultimaker has no interest in making the printer user serviceable.
Ultimaker has never been a budget friendly printer. They design their own stuff, they do their own thing. Joel isn't even doing a review here. He is showcasing what it is and how it works. There was a time when people used to get excited by the inclusion of printers that were out of their price range on channels like this because it gave us a window into something we will perhaps never buy. You can get a cheaper printer. In fact, you are free to do so! But this thing is undeniably pretty, and would fit a lot easier into an office versus many of the other i3 style designs. I really appreciate the opportunity to see this thing in use, as I will likely never get to use one in person. Can't we all just enjoy it for what it is, and maybe spare some of the shade being thrown at Joel?
Print 'N Play - The problem with highlighting a printer like this is the suggestion that through a higher price you are getting a better printer. Someone new to the hobby would assume that this is the best you can get because it costs more. This is simply not the case. There are much better printers out there at a fraction of the cost. Ultimaker brings nothing to the game except the camouflage of good looks. If they were doing some revolutionary, I would support them. If feel all they are doing is taking advantage of less informed individuals.
Not exactly, the reason people like to see stuff like this is because it's the future, showcasing the cutting edge tech that will be more affordable in a couple years. Except the S5 isn't showcasing any significant new technology, it's just expensive. Don't get me wrong, Ultimaker printers are nice and should command a premium price, but their price is too ridiculous. There is no way in hell it costs them more to design and build the S5 than e.g. the Form 2 (a different sort of printer, but one that is definitely at the high end technically and market-wise), but it costs almost twice as much! Ultimaker gives a lot to the community so it's hard to really hate them, but a ripoff is a ripoff.
The issue is that, by taking part into such video, Joel is actively helping Ultimaker rip off their potential customers by selling am inferior product for a premium price. That printer is not worth the price Ultimaker is asking for it.
leakforme well suggestions are always subjective. I always start off by asking someone what they want to do with it. Then if they want to build it themselves, how comfortable they are with electrical, etc.
I think the MK3 would have a better ROI than this. I was seriously looking at switching my order to this until I seen that price tag. My biggest problem is the thing does not look like it's easy to be worked on. Where the MK3 I can do most whatever to that. Anyways, good job at getting these sponsor deals. I know it can be hard getting to that point where you get them.
Hey Craig! I think Ultimaker is rightfully worried about the underside and people opening it up while the machine is plugged in / turned on. With the AC rail in there, I can see why they would be worried, and made it harder to get in. As for the rest of the machine, I cannot speak to that as I didn't dig in. Also, get this - this wasn't sponsored, but I was afraid by having an informational video about a product people would _say_ it's paid for, so I was hoping to mitigate those responses by just marking it as sponsored. Fingers crossed maybe Ultimaker will sponsor some content sometime :)

Great video. It’s nice to have a glimpse into the professional world of 3D Printing. People who think a multi million dollar company would buy a consumer or semi professional machine are ignorant. These companies don’t buy things to tinker with. They buy something reliable and professional. Simple as that. Companies who buy this spend $6000 on dinner. These printers and more expensive ones are not marketed to hobbyists or small companies.
This thing is for business use, not for us poor plebs. Gotta make sure you're way out on the extreme end of diminishing returns in that market. Not sure why it's so expensive other than they can get away with it, there's not even any significant new technology here.
human labour in tuning, tweaking, calibrating and iterating. i'm sure the BOM is way lower, but someone had to develop that lcd, design the control board.... not to mention one of the biggest reasons ultimaker is awesome: tuning. like material research, backlash compensation, just endless tuning. oh, and customer support ofcourse, along with the quallity garantee
I agree, they have a right to charge a premium, just not this much. I mean they can get away with it and I'm sure they will sell plenty, but that doesn't mean it's not still a bad deal. Even $5000 would be a lot more reasonable.
RUWO Is this the reason why people keep complaining about UM printers that were assembled wrong out of the box, had nicks and dents on the finish, had screws shearing on parts due to over torquing among other issues?

People bashing the price of this printer probably do not understand why it is so expensive. Ultimaker's are incredibly easy to use, as well as reliable. Not to mention, many companies like mine aren't comparing this machine to prusas or cr10s, but they are comparing them to the 6 figure stratasys printers. My company was burnt out on desktop printing after having an unreliable makerbot. They were ready to buy a $140,000 stratasys printer to print fixtures for our measuring process. I convinced them that an Ultimaker would work instead, and we now have 3 Ultimaker 3 Extendeds printing 24 hours a day. The cost savings for us is well over 6 figures and the lead time is remarkable. This machine is meant for professionals who don't want to mess with reprap or printers made from 3d printed parts. It's compatiblity with cura on a network is also phenomenal. It's one thing to admit this printer is not for you, but if you say this printer is awful, you simply don't get it.
TBH I don't think we're ready for it. No rep-rap printer I've worked with - granted it's only a handful - are fully lag free on a normal screen. Having a lag on a touch screen is about 10x worse. I'd rather smoother transitions on traditional screens than a touchscreen but that's just me!
Exactly. I have upgraded my prusa i3 clone with MKS set(touchscreen with new board) from Aliexpress (about 50$) and it works realy nice. No jams. Touch screen could be a little more responsive (its not quality of smartphones screen) but IT DOES THE JOB and is much better then standard i3 LCD type.
The BCN3D Sigma has a nice color touchscreen. Like the ultimaker it has a processor on it so it isnt taxing the main board. Also at MRRF Lulzbot had some color screen prototypes.
irfuel I’m currently working on getting octoprint setup on 4 lulzbots and a Prusa MK2 but it’s been a bit tricky. I’m running them all using an old Mac Mini I had lying around. I was going to use a pi, but it wouldn’t work with the powered USB 3.0 hub I had and 4 ports on a pi just wasn’t going to cut it for 5 printers and 5 cameras.
I'm confused. There are a number of people that are angry about the price tag. Then...this machine isn't for you. That's like getting mad at a car website for writing an article about the new Rolls Royce SUV. Of COURSE it's expensive, but there are some people who will buy it (uh, not me), and a lot of people who want to know about it even though they can't buy it (definitely me). The same goes for these machines. There are 3D Printers more in line with your budget, I'm sure. And I'm also sure that Joel has done reviews and videos on them. Just take the video for what it is - learning about a new piece of machinery in a field you're interested in. I'm sure, just like every other toy and machine, the price will go down on this one as well eventually....
Hnnnnng. Six grand, eh? I'm known to throw more money than I ought to on tools and parts, but it's pretty clear Ultimaker is not targetting makers, so much as maker spaces. In which case, beating MK2/3 print quality isn't the concern, so much as being more reliable and having good customer service. (Low bar, btw. Not that Prusa is bad at support, but shipping from Prague is a nightmare.) Companies operating print farms probably aren't going to pay $6,000 a unit. They'll probably opt for TAZ 6's, or some similarly-sturdy i3-style bot for less. Typical makers aren't going to pay $6,000, either. Most of us will find a good base for a tenth or less and improve it as needed. A library, school, or maker space, though, might find it worth the pain just because it's a sturdy design, and it has a door to keep careless hands from falling on the build plate. I think this might be approaching the limit most of those places would be willing to spend, though.
Considering it's hinted several times in the video that the printer is not user serviceable ("The power supply is harder to get to", "We don't really want users opening it", "It's dangerous down there because of AC", "Were gonna put a ton of warnings in there"), a maker space would be stupid if they spend this much on a printer they can't even fix themselves, which kind of goes against what a maker space is.
Depends on the place. Not every maker space is into doing their own servicing. Whether to consider that a real maker space or a gym with printers instead of treadmills is another thing, but there are a good pile of places that like their machines to be appliances with good warranties or service agreements.
That's not cost effective. Everything inside of a maker space should be user serviceable. Also, for the price of a single Ultimaker, you can buy 5 Prusa i3 printers, which have removable build plates and can print on several materials, on top of having the surge and fillament runout protections...Which this printer that costs 5 times more doesn't.
CrimSun The question is whats your ROI? 2 years? Plus you have to think about servicing costs and all their propietary shit. I dont think im wiling to wait 3 years to get my money back. With my machines i have a 2 months ROI. Its my own design and they have everything an i3 mk2 has and even better quality so f ultimaker. They are trying to poll an apple on people.
CrimSun Actually, it does have a runout sensor. I couldn't find a thing referencing a power loss resume feature, however. I agree that it isn't cost-effective, but I can still at least see a couple of the spaces here going for something like this, if the support is there. (Really, how much of a milling machine can you stuff in a building for the price of three of these?)

Seems a bit expensive when now we get printers like the Prusa i3 MK3... I understand there's a lot of stuff added to, like the enclosure or a way better display/interface, but still, Having 5 MK3 for the price of 1 S5...
The mk3 is a great printer, but it's still a tinkerer's machine. The Ultimakers have always been expensive, but they are essentially as plug and play and beginner friendly as a printer can get. I think they're great for the office printer, or something you need for a workhorse machine, if you have the money to spend and just want peace of mind. If you don't, then absolutely yes the mk3, or even the mk2s, is a fantastic option.
Sean Conelly, They are not friendly to your pocket. A beginnner will definetly not spend 6 grand on a 3d printer. That's the same as saying that every electronics hobbyist should start with a Fluke 87 V multimeter.
I disagree, a beginner witht he right budget for an Ultimaker and a "best of the best" mentality would absolutely start there. I'm not saying that Ultimaker is the "best of the best" but it is certainly the image they are going for, much like an Apple product. So someone who doesn't know much about it could easily be swayed that direction. Just my opinion :)
If you want to try 3D printing and you're not sure if you'll like or not, will you spend 6 grand on this printer or get something like a Monoprice Mini? Beginners don't know what makes this printer so expensive (and neither do regular users) and why does it matter, since for them all 3D printers do the same thing anyways. It's not like we're comparing paper printers here, where the user knows what they are getting for their money. Also, a beginner's "best of the best" sense of product in this case is BS. They don't know the difference to begin with, so they can't tell the difference. Then you'll see their faces as they try to defend their purchase later (like people who bought Apple devices do) when other people tell them they could've gotten a better product for less than half the money they spent on that Ultimaker. Also, this printer is going into Apple territory by making it harder to be serviced by the user, which is subtly hinted in several portions of the video. That alone pours more salt into the wound. You'd expect a more expensive printer to be easier to service (as the whole home 3d printer market started with printers you either had to build or fix yourself anyways), not the opposite.
Still trying to figure out which part of the market they are trying to attract. $6,000 is still a pretty steep price for even small design/engineer agency. Not mentioning most of the agency needs at least two or more printers to copes with their needs. I would be interesting to hear the opinion from those small business owners.
I bought an Ultimaker 3 which I eventually returned for a refund. While the printer was very nice looking. I never felt comfortable with the price vs. the quality and speed of the prints I was receiving. They were nice, but not $3500 nice. Instead, I purchased a Prusa i3 Mk3 in its place. Not only are my prints as good as the Ultimaker, but they print faster and are easier to (adhere) and remove from the flexible plate. Plus, I'm able to use 1.75 filament which is much easier to obtain. Ultimaker's are built to last and are easy to set up. However, does this in itself justify their exorbitant price? Even more so now that the new model cost over $5500?
Looking at the price point, it's in the same price as the Raise3D Pro2 Plus. I am seeing a significant feature disparity. UM is missing a lot of the Prosumer features, some of which are making it into budget creator space. Realistically this is about $2-3k over what is reasonable for a machine with the included feature-set, but when you give a marketing person softball questions, it's not an interview it's a promo. You can do a matterhackers sponsored video showing the 2-5 premiere professional level machines they offer instead of pandering to UM. Just from looking on MH site, I see several machines in the $4k+ price point.
If I was a professional I would still choose the prusa i3 MK3 over this. Much cheaper, more features. To me it's a no brainer even considering the fact that the product is geared to the prosumer. In case I needed bigger build volume, I'd just get a Raise3D N2+ machine, similar price, but much bigger build volume and expected similar reliability.
CrimSun a professional doesn't service their machines. This is for manufacturing businesses with 20 of them running 24/7, they won't break, stop or fail. This isn't remotely for consumers or small businesses even.
Print factories aren't going to pay that price when there are comparable machines for less. I don't think ultimaker have made a machine that is capable of a 100% uptime, everything breaks down. I see this as a "designer" 3D printer to accompany the mac users of the world. It looks nice and is functional but there are more sensible options
The only reason I would think someone would want this over an N2+ or even Raise3D's new machine would be space. Which shouldn't be an issue if you have $6000 to blow on an FDM printer anyways. Take note that by adding just 1000 more you can buy a sinterit Lisa SLS machine that can make even higher quality parts than any FDM is able to. Considering all this. This new ultimaker doesn't have a single logical reason to buy it. You could still justify an ultimaker 3, but not this one...
Can 3D printers be used with UV filaments to create decoder in fills or decoder markings that a black lamp can help to reveal? Or use different wavelengths of common light to reveal a secret message or varying optical quality? Such as the appearance of laser etched holography but without the laser etched part? Are there 3D extrusion printers that have multiple print heads to build different objects on the same platen simultaneously? In single or full CMYK color mode per model/object? Which 3D printer has the same or similar build quality and speed as a HP FusionJet without the terribly high cost of said machine?

Joel, I really like your videos. Your not afraid to be critical. However this to me just seemed to be a straight up advertisement for ultimaker and there ridiculously overpriced products.
I do believe i fall into their target demographic. I run a 3D Scanning/Printing company here in the UK, we work primarily with museums and also the marine industry. We use 3Dsystems projet machines(which if your unaware you need to add a 0 to that price) , Raise N2+ 's and Intamsys Funmat HT. In my opinion they are overpriced for what you get. I don't want to come across sounding arrogant just didn't agree with your statement.
Love the video, it's great to hear about these new printers, I hope you get to cover a wider and wider variety! Some constructive criticism imho: The cuts from wide to tight and vice versa are a bit too frequent and a bit harsh.
thanks for the feedback. I don't usually do that so much with Joel, as he doesn't do a lot of startting and stopping when talking. But in order to cut out a lot of the "Um"'s and long pauses I usually have to cut up guest speakers a bit more (which is totally common and not the fault of the guest in any way). Sometimes there's enough B-roll to cover that up, sometimes there isn't when the interviews go on for longer periods of time. I'll try and keep those punch-ins to a minimum in the future though!
Alternatively, you could buy a mk3 *and* a pocket nc 5 axis mill and actually have useful, functioning, strong parts that can actually be used for something when you’re done. I can’t imagine how this is a good idea for anyone.
I understand that this is a machine for a more professional setting, that there was a lot of R&D both in software and hardware, that this is supposed to be a workhorse made with more "premium" and stronger materials... But that's a hefty price tag... Don't get me wrong, it looks and sounds like a great machine, but...

@@Aidenn23 cr10 and the new ultimaker have more than a 5000usd price difference. Prusa I3 MK3 printers have a similar price difference and they rival, even outperform the ultimaker.
You usually doesn't measure volume in cm³, you use dm³ or liters. Liters are less digits and easier to remember. And Coke is measured in liters, not cm³. ;-)
What is easier? liter (dm³) or cm³? In this liter is more useful, with an appropriate precision. But yes, if you like cm³ use it. It is better than US gallons anyways. :-)
Nice to have a look at it, so to speak. I love my UMO and UM2+, they are my workhorses and would love one of these but the price is waaaaaaaay out of my league. It's £6k in the UK so not for me. As for the paid promotion blah? Meh, the warnings were there and I personally don't care if it's paid or not, it's the machine I wanted to see. Keep doing your thing, Joel. #highfive

I know that 'affordable' is a relative concept, however, that having been said, this is a machine that I will most likely never be able to 'afford'! I would prefer to see reviews and introductions to things that are more 'affordable -' if you will - for me. The I3's , the CR-10's, etc.... sorry Joel but this one gets a dislike.
worth mentioning that if your looking at getting this printer Ultimaker has backpedaled on the promise of an aluminium build plate for engineering. after promising buyers this feature to get them to buy the machine they revealed they cant get it to work well and are offering a cheap glass plate as the solution. While i respect the honesty, this is some shady ish to promise something like a super durable and robust build plate and to bait and switch buyers into the same old tech they committed to doing better than in order to sell this very expensive printer is very sad. just beware as there may be some marketing material out there about the metal build plate, ignore it. its not happening.
I hate 3d printing mostly. Because of how long it takes. This machine printing wont be any faster than 100mms and check out this build volume. Y axis is 240mm and x is 300mm. So cost is £6000 and yet for £500 the firm creality have their CR10s pro v2 which is £500 and the volume is greater. Their printer x axis is 300 and y axis the same. So why would a firm o for sizes different. Very weird.
Does anyone know if the filament sensor will be offered as an upgrade piece to Ultimaker 3 machines at some point? I use the 3+ at work and not having this feature is super frustrating for a $4000 machine running in a multi-user environment.
oobasnork The filamemt sensor won‘t be made available to the Ultimaker 3 as companys are not interested in upgrade kits. Also the dimensions/cable routings changed. With a bit of tweaking you may be able to make it work but you still need the software...
Guess I'm stuck using the NFC spools and making sure that my team is mindful of the material estimates before kicking off a print job. Oh well! Thanks for the answer Christopher :)
I love Ultimaker but $7000 is just too expensive. Edit: I'm actually not going to finish watching this because this machine is not for home use. And as such, this review is not for me.
You know Joel. I love you man. You do great things but this was a bit weird. Kinda like I have found your other paid promotion stuff. It's a bit too stiff/rigid. Feels like terrible acting. We get it isn't meant to be a review. But surely you can be a little criticle. I mean we are talking about a product that is $6000. Sure it is targeted as a business product. But myself and basically everyone else here I am sure agrees that it is still really more reprap and tinkery than the price tag really allows. Sure they have profiles etc etc. But at the end of the day the user still must mess with settings at some point, will have to diagnose and fix problems with the hardware. It really isn't smart enough and autonomous enough to justify the price. Now if you said $6000 for a printer that could: Self measure filament as it enters the filament sensor to determine it's size down to0.005-0.01mm accuracy and auto-correct for the variation Had filament jam detection (maybe based on smart control of the extruder motors to know when they are pushing too hard or too easily) Had triple Z axis auto-leveling Had power panic homing and location saving (they have the space to put in a small battery or solid state power storage cell) Add a raspberry pi option with Klipper maybe. (not sure what licensing the guy has on klipper. Could do a deal with him. who knows. Or give people the option to install it onto the raspberry pi.) Really for $6000 at this size and FDM you could do anything. Look at the tool changing printer from E3D. That thing is going to be friggin baller as all hell. How much did they want for that? nowhere near what Ultimaker want. If I had anywhere near the cash and I could literally just throw it away I would rather buy something else other than this in it's current form
The e3d printer doesnt come ready out of the box, it is also not available for purchase and delivery yet. Power panic, jam detection, etc are all just gimmicks. I run 6 printers constantly and have never had a need for any of those features. Buy quality filament, printers and have reliable power and you will never use any of those features.
The e3d system doesn't need to come assembled. It takes about 15 minutes to put together for someone that knows what they are doing. Worst case 30 minutes for a first timer with no experience and using the manual. is that worth all those extra thousands. E3D said the tool changing system excluding the hotends and excluding the control boards was about $1000 for the mechanics etc. So lets say you hired someone to assemble it and bought 4 hotends for whatever materials plus the control boards. That is still WELL under $2000. For a VASTLY superior machine in every conceivable way. Sure that machine doesn't have triple Z auto bed leveling (since it was a thing I listed as a must have on a 6k machine). but it has a BLtouch, far better movement system, better components etc etc better everything. for less than a third of the cost with all 4 toolheads, motherboard and getting someone to assemble it at an outrageous cost. also the S5 isn't out yet either. it's on preorder. So on that point both are on the same level right now. Power panic is great. hello power outages and massive power fluctuations are a thing in most parts of the world. Even an office building with a backup generator. Would you rather have the feature that pulls the very hot and under pressure (since bowden so even worse) nozzle away from your part that has been running for 10+ hours and is meant to be a production sample/showpiece etc. Or would you rather not have it and end up with a mess of molten plastic and a melt hole in your part because of heat crept into it before it cooled. jam detection is good too. even good filament can jam or you can get a jam for so many other reasons. dust in the air for one. it happens. even if it barely happens or happens once a month. I would rather have it than all of a sudden on any print that takes several hours to complete for a random jam to occur and my entire part is ruined because I wasn't there. Production environments can't afford to have someone watching the printer all the time. you need to set and forget and get a notification if something happens. not constant distractions of worrying and checking. At the end of the day they aren't gimmicks. they are features that you hope to not need. Nothing in what those features do can be defined as a gimmick.
Martin B the e3d kit price excludes electronics and hotends. So whoever buys it needs those and then to figure out a way to wire it all up. The ultimaker is ready to go out of the box. When someone is buying it for a business anything saved is wasted in costs pf having an employee assemble that kit and wire it. Then spend time troubleshooting issues that may occur. Besides e3d support and documentation on how to use the printer will be far less than the ultimaker
In my reply I did actually say it excludes hotends and the controllers. It doens't exclude "electronics" because it comes with the motors, endstops etc. At the end of the day it is still well under a third of the price even when you pay a PROFESSIONAL to assemble it. Hell if you asked E3D to assemble it with all 4 hotends and electronics they would probably charge you under $2000. That would be as professional as it gets. If you don't know much about E3D and their practices you don't know they have been working on it for a while and iron out their own issues. Hell they probably have tons of profiles at this point that are just as good as Ultimakers or better. It is a simple fact that the E3d printer is going to be better...by a lot. Just an FYI. People using ultimakers have to troubleshoot a lot in any event. Ultimaker is much slower to help with a problem (if ever) than E3d are. E3d customer support is pretty darn good. Why? because they know their products backwards, forwards, side to side in another dimension....i'm sure you get the point. If you have seen the levels of documentation they do for any of their products you will get an idea of the level of detail they will have for their upcoming printer. Doing some actual math on the printer cost. $1000 for the main system + 4 genuine e3d hotends + duet mainboard + duet expansion board. All comes to a total of $1587 rounded to the cents. So even if some guy wanted $400 to build + wire and test each machine. It would still cost less than $2000. Yes im excluding shipping because I am not including the shipping price in with the Ultimaker. At the end of the day you could still buy 3 tool changing systems, pay some guy a ridiculous amount of money to build them and maintain them than it would cost to buy 1 Ultimaker S5...... There is literally not a single argument that can be made that the Ultimaker is better than the E3d system will be. Hell. if the E3d system came fully assembled with all electronics etc at the exact same price as the Ultimaker S5...I would still take the E3d printer. It is a better machine from the get go and it's potential is far far higher than the ultimaker.

The price for this is redonkulous. You can buy a much larger printer for the cost of this printer. I don't know what the deal about pulling a Makerbot saying that they are hiding the internals due to electrical shock. He should have said that he did that to get educational sales from a marketing perspective it would make more sense. It does look nice, but not 6k nice. For long prints how about mounting the same filament on both extruders. Start printing with one and when the filament runs out have the printer automatically switch to the second extruder.
I really like this idea! Not something that will necessarily get used often, but probably something really easy to implement.
I use an Excel sheet to keep track of my filament's inventory so I know exactly if I have enough materials left on the spool. I wonder if it's a common practice for people.
I used a spreadsheet for a while. Now I just weigh and write the beginning weight of the spool on the label. Then I just subtract the current weight from the starting weight which tells me how much has been used. I can then subtract that from 1000 to figure out the remaining amount on the spool.
But that will make the printer cost 12 grand. Because... It's like you having two Ultimakers at the same time.

There is nothing wrong with smoothrods. They can still be very precise and they are low maintenance. That might be why they stuck with those. Rails require cleaning and also grease.
ok its pretty big. But it does not even come close to a Raise3d N2 plus which was already available 2 yrs ago. I am impressed but not by the size. In the meantime we saw the Cr10 S5 which is 50x50x50 cm.. i am impressed about the quality and ingenuity, the clean look, it is probably the best consumer / prosumer 3d printer out there. For 6k i would still prefer the new Raise n2 Plus Pro. Same price, big touchscreen, complete housing, retractable dual heads.. and more than double the printsize.

- Ultimaker doesn't want you to open the printer.
- Ultimaker has no interest in making the printer user serviceable.
Ultimaker has never been a budget friendly printer. They design their own stuff, they do their own thing. Joel isn't even doing a review here. He is showcasing what it is and how it works.
There was a time when people used to get excited by the inclusion of printers that were out of their price range on channels like this because it gave us a window into something we will perhaps never buy.
You can get a cheaper printer. In fact, you are free to do so! But this thing is undeniably pretty, and would fit a lot easier into an office versus many of the other i3 style designs.
I really appreciate the opportunity to see this thing in use, as I will likely never get to use one in person. Can't we all just enjoy it for what it is, and maybe spare some of the shade being thrown at Joel?
Print 'N Play - The problem with highlighting a printer like this is the suggestion that through a higher price you are getting a better printer. Someone new to the hobby would assume that this is the best you can get because it costs more. This is simply not the case. There are much better printers out there at a fraction of the cost. Ultimaker brings nothing to the game except the camouflage of good looks. If they were doing some revolutionary, I would support them. If feel all they are doing is taking advantage of less informed individuals.
Not exactly, the reason people like to see stuff like this is because it's the future, showcasing the cutting edge tech that will be more affordable in a couple years. Except the S5 isn't showcasing any significant new technology, it's just expensive. Don't get me wrong, Ultimaker printers are nice and should command a premium price, but their price is too ridiculous. There is no way in hell it costs them more to design and build the S5 than e.g. the Form 2 (a different sort of printer, but one that is definitely at the high end technically and market-wise), but it costs almost twice as much! Ultimaker gives a lot to the community so it's hard to really hate them, but a ripoff is a ripoff.
The issue is that, by taking part into such video, Joel is actively helping Ultimaker rip off their potential customers by selling am inferior product for a premium price. That printer is not worth the price Ultimaker is asking for it.

leakforme well suggestions are always subjective. I always start off by asking someone what they want to do with it. Then if they want to build it themselves, how comfortable they are with electrical, etc.
I think the MK3 would have a better ROI than this. I was seriously looking at switching my order to this until I seen that price tag.
My biggest problem is the thing does not look like it's easy to be worked on. Where the MK3 I can do most whatever to that.

Hey Craig! I think Ultimaker is rightfully worried about the underside and people opening it up while the machine is plugged in / turned on. With the AC rail in there, I can see why they would be worried, and made it harder to get in. As for the rest of the machine, I cannot speak to that as I didn't dig in.

Great video. It’s nice to have a glimpse into the professional world of 3D Printing. People who think a multi million dollar company would buy a consumer or semi professional machine are ignorant. These companies don’t buy things to tinker with. They buy something reliable and professional. Simple as that. Companies who buy this spend $6000 on dinner. These printers and more expensive ones are not marketed to hobbyists or small companies.
In short - 'It doesn't do anything other printers do for 10x cheaper, but it looks cool!!'

not to mention one of the biggest reasons ultimaker is awesome: tuning. like material research, backlash compensation, just endless tuning. oh, and customer support ofcourse, along with the quallity garantee
I agree, they have a right to charge a premium, just not this much. I mean they can get away with it and I'm sure they will sell plenty, but that doesn't mean it's not still a bad deal. Even $5000 would be a lot more reasonable.

People bashing the price of this printer probably do not understand why it is so expensive. Ultimaker's are incredibly easy to use, as well as reliable. Not to mention, many companies like mine aren't comparing this machine to prusas or cr10s, but they are comparing them to the 6 figure stratasys printers. My company was burnt out on desktop printing after having an unreliable makerbot. They were ready to buy a $140,000 stratasys printer to print fixtures for our measuring process. I convinced them that an Ultimaker would work instead, and we now have 3 Ultimaker 3 Extendeds printing 24 hours a day. The cost savings for us is well over 6 figures and the lead time is remarkable. This machine is meant for professionals who don't want to mess with reprap or printers made from 3d printed parts. It's compatiblity with cura on a network is also phenomenal. It's one thing to admit this printer is not for you, but if you say this printer is awful, you simply don't get it.

TBH I don't think we're ready for it. No rep-rap printer I've worked with - granted it's only a handful - are fully lag free on a normal screen. Having a lag on a touch screen is about 10x worse. I'd rather smoother transitions on traditional screens than a touchscreen but that's just me!
Exactly. I have upgraded my prusa i3 clone with MKS set(touchscreen with new board) from Aliexpress (about 50$) and it works realy nice. No jams. Touch screen could be a little more responsive (its not quality of smartphones screen) but IT DOES THE JOB and is much better then standard i3 LCD type.
The BCN3D Sigma has a nice color touchscreen. Like the ultimaker it has a processor on it so it isnt taxing the main board. Also at MRRF Lulzbot had some color screen prototypes.

irfuel I’m currently working on getting octoprint setup on 4 lulzbots and a Prusa MK2 but it’s been a bit tricky. I’m running them all using an old Mac Mini I had lying around. I was going to use a pi, but it wouldn’t work with the powered USB 3.0 hub I had and 4 ports on a pi just wasn’t going to cut it for 5 printers and 5 cameras.

I'm confused. There are a number of people that are angry about the price tag. Then...this machine isn't for you. That's like getting mad at a car website for writing an article about the new Rolls Royce SUV. Of COURSE it's expensive, but there are some people who will buy it (uh, not me), and a lot of people who want to know about it even though they can't buy it (definitely me). The same goes for these machines. There are 3D Printers more in line with your budget, I'm sure. And I'm also sure that Joel has done reviews and videos on them. Just take the video for what it is - learning about a new piece of machinery in a field you're interested in. I'm sure, just like every other toy and machine, the price will go down on this one as well eventually....

Hnnnnng. Six grand, eh? I'm known to throw more money than I ought to on tools and parts, but it's pretty clear Ultimaker is not targetting makers, so much as maker spaces. In which case, beating MK2/3 print quality isn't the concern, so much as being more reliable and having good customer service. (Low bar, btw. Not that Prusa is bad at support, but shipping from Prague is a nightmare.)
Companies operating print farms probably aren't going to pay $6,000 a unit. They'll probably opt for TAZ 6's, or some similarly-sturdy i3-style bot for less.
Typical makers aren't going to pay $6,000, either. Most of us will find a good base for a tenth or less and improve it as needed.
A library, school, or maker space, though, might find it worth the pain just because it's a sturdy design, and it has a door to keep careless hands from falling on the build plate. I think this might be approaching the limit most of those places would be willing to spend, though.
Considering it's hinted several times in the video that the printer is not user serviceable ("The power supply is harder to get to", "We don't really want users opening it", "It's dangerous down there because of AC", "Were gonna put a ton of warnings in there"), a maker space would be stupid if they spend this much on a printer they can't even fix themselves, which kind of goes against what a maker space is.
Depends on the place. Not every maker space is into doing their own servicing. Whether to consider that a real maker space or a gym with printers instead of treadmills is another thing, but there are a good pile of places that like their machines to be appliances with good warranties or service agreements.
That's not cost effective. Everything inside of a maker space should be user serviceable. Also, for the price of a single Ultimaker, you can buy 5 Prusa i3 printers, which have removable build plates and can print on several materials, on top of having the surge and fillament runout protections...Which this printer that costs 5 times more doesn't.

The question is whats your ROI? 2 years? Plus you have to think about servicing costs and all their propietary shit. I dont think im wiling to wait 3 years to get my money back. With my machines i have a 2 months ROI. Its my own design and they have everything an i3 mk2 has and even better quality so f ultimaker. They are trying to poll an apple on people.

I agree that it isn't cost-effective, but I can still at least see a couple of the spaces here going for something like this, if the support is there. Seems a bit expensive when now we get printers like the Prusa i3 MK3... I understand there's a lot of stuff added to, like the enclosure or a way better display/interface, but still, Having 5 MK3 for the price of 1 S5...
The mk3 is a great printer, but it's still a tinkerer's machine. The Ultimakers have always been expensive, but they are essentially as plug and play and beginner friendly as a printer can get. I think they're great for the office printer, or something you need for a workhorse machine, if you have the money to spend and just want peace of mind. If you don't, then absolutely yes the mk3, or even the mk2s, is a fantastic option.

Sean Conelly, They are not friendly to your pocket. A beginnner will definetly not spend 6 grand on a 3d printer. That's the same as saying that every electronics hobbyist should start with a Fluke 87 V multimeter.
I disagree, a beginner witht he right budget for an Ultimaker and a "best of the best" mentality would absolutely start there. I'm not saying that Ultimaker is the "best of the best" but it is certainly the image they are going for, much like an Apple product. So someone who doesn't know much about it could easily be swayed that direction. Just my opinion :)
If you want to try 3D printing and you're not sure if you'll like or not, will you spend 6 grand on this printer or get something like a Monoprice Mini? Beginners don't know what makes this printer so expensive (and neither do regular users) and why does it matter, since for them all 3D printers do the same thing anyways. It's not like we're comparing paper printers here, where the user knows what they are getting for their money. Also, a beginner's "best of the best" sense of product in this case is BS. They don't know the difference to begin with, so they can't tell the difference. Then you'll see their faces as they try to defend their purchase later (like people who bought Apple devices do) when other people tell them they could've gotten a better product for less than half the money they spent on that Ultimaker.
Also, this printer is going into Apple territory by making it harder to be serviced by the user, which is subtly hinted in several portions of the video. That alone pours more salt into the wound. You'd expect a more expensive printer to be easier to service (as the whole home 3d printer market started with printers you either had to build or fix yourself anyways), not the opposite.
Back in those days we could still close to people.

Still trying to figure out which part of the market they are trying to attract. $6,000 is still a pretty steep price for even small design/engineer agency. Not mentioning most of the agency needs at least two or more printers to copes with their needs. I would be interesting to hear the opinion from those small business owners.

I bought an Ultimaker 3 which I eventually returned for a refund. While the printer was very nice looking. I never felt comfortable with the price vs. the quality and speed of the prints I was receiving. They were nice, but not $3500 nice. Instead, I purchased a Prusa i3 Mk3 in its place. Not only are my prints as good as the Ultimaker, but they print faster and are easier to (adhere) and remove from the flexible plate. Plus, I'm able to use 1.75 filament which is much easier to obtain. Ultimaker's are built to last and are easy to set up. However, does this in itself justify their exorbitant price? Even more so now that the new model cost over $5500?

Looking at the price point, it's in the same price as the Raise3D Pro2 Plus. I am seeing a significant feature disparity. UM is missing a lot of the Prosumer features, some of which are making it into budget creator space. Realistically this is about $2-3k over what is reasonable for a machine with the included feature-set, but when you give a marketing person softball questions, it's not an interview it's a promo. You can do a matterhackers sponsored video showing the 2-5 premiere professional level machines they offer instead of pandering to UM. Just from looking on MH site, I see several machines in the $4k+ price point.

Why all the hate on the price people? This product is geared for the professional, NOT the home user.
A professional doesn't need an expensive printer that's not user serviceable.
If I was a professional I would still choose the prusa i3 MK3 over this. Much cheaper, more features. To me it's a no brainer even considering the fact that the product is geared to the prosumer. In case I needed bigger build volume, I'd just get a Raise3D N2+ machine, similar price, but much bigger build volume and expected similar reliability.
CrimSun a professional doesn't service their machines. This is for manufacturing businesses with 20 of them running 24/7, they won't break, stop or fail. This isn't remotely for consumers or small businesses even.
Print factories aren't going to pay that price when there are comparable machines for less. I don't think ultimaker have made a machine that is capable of a 100% uptime, everything breaks down. I see this as a "designer" 3D printer to accompany the mac users of the world. It looks nice and is functional but there are more sensible options
The only reason I would think someone would want this over an N2+ or even Raise3D's new machine would be space. Which shouldn't be an issue if you have $6000 to blow on an FDM printer anyways. Take note that by adding just 1000 more you can buy a sinterit Lisa SLS machine that can make even higher quality parts than any FDM is able to. Considering all this. This new ultimaker doesn't have a single logical reason to buy it. You could still justify an ultimaker 3, but not this one...

Can 3D printers be used with UV filaments to create decoder in fills or decoder markings that a black lamp can help to reveal? Or use different wavelengths of common light to reveal a secret message or varying optical quality? Such as the appearance of laser etched holography but without the laser etched part? Are there 3D extrusion printers that have multiple print heads to build different objects on the same platen simultaneously? In single or full CMYK color mode per model/object?
Which 3D printer has the same or similar build quality and speed as a HP FusionJet without the terribly high cost of said machine?

I do believe i fall into their target demographic. I run a 3D Scanning/Printing company here in the UK, we work primarily with museums and also the marine industry. We use 3Dsystems projet machines(which if your unaware you need to add a 0 to that price) , Raise N2+ 's and Intamsys Funmat HT. In my opinion they are overpriced for what you get. I don't want to come across sounding arrogant just didn't agree with your statement.

The cuts from wide to tight and vice versa are a bit too frequent and a bit harsh.
thanks for the feedback. I don't usually do that so much with Joel, as he doesn't do a lot of startting and stopping when talking. But in order to cut out a lot of the "Um"'s and long pauses I usually have to cut up guest speakers a bit more (which is totally common and not the fault of the guest in any way). Sometimes there's enough B-roll to cover that up, sometimes there isn't when the interviews go on for longer periods of time. I'll try and keep those punch-ins to a minimum in the future though!
Why does everyone leave out the Ultimaker Original when talking about their line up?
Alternatively, you could buy a mk3 *and* a pocket nc 5 axis mill and actually have useful, functioning, strong parts that can actually be used for something when you’re done.

Nice to have a look at it, so to speak. I love my UMO and UM2+, they are my workhorses and would love one of these but the price is waaaaaaaay out of my league. It's £6k in the UK so not for me.

I know that 'affordable' is a relative concept, however, that having been said, this is a machine that I will most likely never be able to 'afford'! I would prefer to see reviews and introductions to things that are more 'affordable -' if you will - for me. The I3's , the CR-10's, etc.... sorry Joel but this one gets a dislike.

worth mentioning that if your looking at getting this printer Ultimaker has backpedaled on the promise of an aluminium build plate for engineering. after promising buyers this feature to get them to buy the machine they revealed they cant get it to work well and are offering a cheap glass plate as the solution. While i respect the honesty, this is some shady ish to promise something like a super durable and robust build plate and to bait and switch buyers into the same old tech they committed to doing better than in order to sell this very expensive printer is very sad.
just beware as there may be some marketing material out there about the metal build plate, ignore it. its not happening.

I hate 3d printing mostly. Because of how long it takes. This machine printing wont be any faster than 100mms and check out this build volume. Y axis is 240mm and x is 300mm. So cost is £6000 and yet for £500 the firm creality have their CR10s pro v2 which is £500 and the volume is greater. Their printer x axis is 300 and y axis the same. So why would a firm o for sizes different. Very weird.
Does anyone know if the filament sensor will be offered as an upgrade piece to Ultimaker 3 machines at some point? I use the 3+ at work and not having this feature is super frustrating for a $4000 machine running in a multi-user environment.
oobasnork The filamemt sensor won‘t be made available to the Ultimaker 3 as companys are not interested in upgrade kits. Also the dimensions/cable routings changed. With a bit of tweaking you may be able to make it work but you still need the software...
Guess I'm stuck using the NFC spools and making sure that my team is mindful of the material estimates before kicking off a print job. Oh well! Thanks for the answer Christopher :)
There is a slight lag on their LCD though. This printer is way too expensive.

You know Joel. I love you man. You do great things but this was a bit weird. Kinda like I have found your other paid promotion stuff. It's a bit too stiff/rigid. Feels like terrible acting. We get it isn't meant to be a review. But surely you can be a little criticle. I mean we are talking about a product that is $6000. Sure it is targeted as a business product. But myself and basically everyone else here I am sure agrees that it is still really more reprap and tinkery than the price tag really allows. Sure they have profiles etc etc. But at the end of the day the user still must mess with settings at some point, will have to diagnose and fix problems with the hardware. It really isn't smart enough and autonomous enough to justify the price.
Now if you said $6000 for a printer that could:
Self measure filament as it enters the filament sensor to determine it's size down to0.005-0.01mm accuracy and auto-correct for the variation
Had filament jam detection (maybe based on smart control of the extruder motors to know when they are pushing too hard or too easily)
Had triple Z axis auto-leveling
Had power panic homing and location saving (they have the space to put in a small battery or solid state power storage cell)
Add a raspberry pi option with Klipper maybe. (not sure what licensing the guy has on klipper. Could do a deal with him. who knows. Or give people the option to install it onto the raspberry pi.)
Really for $6000 at this size and FDM you could do anything. Look at the tool changing printer from E3D. That thing is going to be friggin baller as all hell. How much did they want for that? nowhere near what Ultimaker want.
If I had anywhere near the cash and I could literally just throw it away I would rather buy something else other than this in it's current form
The e3d printer doesnt come ready out of the box, it is also not available for purchase and delivery yet. Power panic, jam detection, etc are all just gimmicks. I run 6 printers constantly and have never had a need for any of those features. Buy quality filament, printers and have reliable power and you will never use any of those features.
The e3d system doesn't need to come assembled. It takes about 15 minutes to put together for someone that knows what they are doing. Worst case 30 minutes for a first timer with no experience and using the manual. is that worth all those extra thousands. E3D said the tool changing system excluding the hotends and excluding the control boards was about $1000 for the mechanics etc. So lets say you hired someone to assemble it and bought 4 hotends for whatever materials plus the control boards. That is still WELL under $2000.
For a VASTLY superior machine in every conceivable way. Sure that machine doesn't have triple Z auto bed leveling (since it was a thing I listed as a must have on a 6k machine). but it has a BLtouch, far better movement system, better components etc etc better everything. for less than a third of the cost with all 4 toolheads, motherboard and getting someone to assemble it at an outrageous cost.
also the S5 isn't out yet either. it's on preorder. So on that point both are on the same level right now.
Power panic is great. hello power outages and massive power fluctuations are a thing in most parts of the world. Even an office building with a backup generator. Would you rather have the feature that pulls the very hot and under pressure (since bowden so even worse) nozzle away from your part that has been running for 10+ hours and is meant to be a production sample/showpiece etc. Or would you rather not have it and end up with a mess of molten plastic and a melt hole in your part because of heat crept into it before it cooled.
jam detection is good too. even good filament can jam or you can get a jam for so many other reasons. dust in the air for one. it happens.
even if it barely happens or happens once a month. I would rather have it than all of a sudden on any print that takes several hours to complete for a random jam to occur and my entire part is ruined because I wasn't there. Production environments can't afford to have someone watching the printer all the time. you need to set and forget and get a notification if something happens. not constant distractions of worrying and checking.
At the end of the day they aren't gimmicks. they are features that you hope to not need. Nothing in what those features do can be defined as a gimmick.
Martin B the e3d kit price excludes electronics and hotends. So whoever buys it needs those and then to figure out a way to wire it all up. The ultimaker is ready to go out of the box. When someone is buying it for a business anything saved is wasted in costs pf having an employee assemble that kit and wire it. Then spend time troubleshooting issues that may occur. Besides e3d support and documentation on how to use the printer will be far less than the ultimaker
In my reply I did actually say it excludes hotends and the controllers. It doens't exclude "electronics" because it comes with the motors, endstops etc.
At the end of the day it is still well under a third of the price even when you pay a PROFESSIONAL to assemble it. Hell if you asked E3D to assemble it with all 4 hotends and electronics they would probably charge you under $2000. That would be as professional as it gets.
If you don't know much about E3D and their practices you don't know they have been working on it for a while and iron out their own issues. Hell they probably have tons of profiles at this point that are just as good as Ultimakers or better.
It is a simple fact that the E3d printer is going to be better...by a lot.
Just an FYI. People using ultimakers have to troubleshoot a lot in any event. Ultimaker is much slower to help with a problem (if ever) than E3d are. E3d customer support is pretty darn good. Why? because they know their products backwards, forwards, side to side in another dimension....i'm sure you get the point. If you have seen the levels of documentation they do for any of their products you will get an idea of the level of detail they will have for their upcoming printer.
Doing some actual math on the printer cost.
$1000 for the main system + 4 genuine e3d hotends + duet mainboard + duet expansion board. All comes to a total of $1587 rounded to the cents. So even if some guy wanted $400 to build + wire and test each machine. It would still cost less than $2000. Yes im excluding shipping because I am not including the shipping price in with the Ultimaker.
At the end of the day you could still buy 3 tool changing systems, pay some guy a ridiculous amount of money to build them and maintain them than it would cost to buy 1 Ultimaker S5......
There is literally not a single argument that can be made that the Ultimaker is better than the E3d system will be.
Hell. if the E3d system came fully assembled with all electronics etc at the exact same price as the Ultimaker S5...I would still take the E3d printer. It is a better machine from the get go and it's potential is far far higher than the ultimaker.

The price for this is redonkulous. You can buy a much larger printer for the cost of this printer. I don't know what the deal about pulling a Makerbot saying that they are hiding the internals due to electrical shock. He should have said that he did that to get educational sales from a marketing perspective it would make more sense. It does look nice, but not 6k nice. That LCD isn't fooling nobody.

If you need build volume you could add a Manga LCD + Duet2 + Dual Extruder to any CoreXY with a large build volume and be at this level. And they all run the same firmware.
