EPIC Sony Portrait Lens Battle: Sony 70-200mm f/4 G I vs G2

  • Today, we're taking a look at Sony's brand new 70-200mm f/4 G Macro OSS II lens and comparing it with the original version during an outdoor portrait session with Katelyn! Which one do you think looked best?
    All of the images being shown in this video are straight out of the camera RAW files that I converted to JPEG. The in-camera JPEG previews that I was seeing in my viewfinder looked different at the time since the A7IV isn't showing you what the RAW file looks like, so keep that in mind as I make remarks throughout the video in comparing these two lenses.

    Which one did you prefer, V1 or V2? To my eyes, the JPEG files I was seeing in the EVF with the new lens made her skintones look really great. The overall performance was better on V2 as well, but V1 definitely surprised me! Let me know which lenses you'd like for me to test in a future video below.

      There is no discernible difference for any who has this lens.

      I can't live without an internal zoom.. with the exception of the Zeiss 16-35 f4, that has a short extension and is very well built. Version 1 feels much better to use.

  • @TLOUTheorist

    I have version 1, I was expecting version 2 to be obviously better given the 9 years difference in release, but it doesn't really look so. If version 2 is better, it's by a tiny margin. So it's not worth the upgrade for me or any existing version1 users for that matter, unless you need macro in this lens (which I don't). Also, the internal focusing is a plus in the old version.

    I do like the new compact size of the V2 but I love the internal zoom of the V1. It looks like both have about the same amount of turning the zoom ring to go from 70-200mm. I like that.

    • @MiguelQuilesJr
      @MiguelQuilesJr  Рік тому +2

      I'm a fan of internal zoom lenses too. The v2 motors are so fast that it makes it a tough choice if you own a newer body.

    I trust your reviews. I have owned the original 70-200mm f/4 version for many years and have shot thousands of images with this lens - using it both on the A7iii and A6600. I am very happy with the lens and the images that it produces.
    If I were in the market for a lens of this focal length, I would have a hard time deciding which to purchase. However, since I own the original version, the new model doesn't offer me enough advantages to justify the cost of replacing the Mk-1 with the Mk-2....

    The 70-200mm Macro which I own now is a beast and at the moment I prefer it for portraits because the portrait with the 85mm 1.4 GM or the 35mm 1.4 Sigma looked great but I like the look of the 70-200 and the flexibility more and comparing to the 85 GM the ears are not sharp at 1.4 everything blurred; I loved that look and it is great for portraits but when shooting two or more people the 70-200 is much better and the sharpness is phenomenal. This lens was as expensive as the 85mm 1.4 GM was and the 135mm 1.8 that I actually wanted but it is so much more versatile.

    The g2 is good but most of the g2 lenses have postwork in mind and it shows in the optics. The f4 tho is good if you got lighting set up, I'm a big fan of f4

  • @twowheels808
    @twowheels808 2 місяці тому

    I think the biggest difference about the V2 was not mentioned here and that’s the macro side of the lens. For portraits I think they’re dead even unless you do some 200+% pixel peeping which is absolutely silly. The V2 compactness is negated because of its external zoom. I would trust the V1 more when it comes to weather sealing.

  • @ivandraganov1355

    THX for the video! I have the V1 and I'm more than satisfied by the performance of this lens. To be honest, the V2 looks so just slightly sharper at 200mm, but the difference b/n the two is not as big as I had expected. Will defo stick with the V1 for the time being! Cheers!

    Good share.
    The skin tones seem slightly warm . Is this the nature of the f4 lens? Same warm tones appear by default with Tamron 70-180 f2.8.
    Why does this happen?
    How do we get natural skin tones, may be usiing the f2.8?
    Would tweaking the white balance to get natural colours while shooting be of any help before correcting post shoot?

    hello, Sony a9 camera is in use.
    I'm thinking about the first and second generation of 70200g products. I want to buy the first generation of 70200g because it's cheaper,
    Question 1.: Will there be a big difference from 70200g2 in quality, sharpness, af, etc?
    Question 2.: Also, would it be good to choose a g2 lens for cameras such as a9 or higher body high pixel body r4, r5, a1 etc? Is it compatible enough with g1?

    I really wanted the new lens but that extending barrel is turning me off. Plus from this video I feel there wasn't much of a difference. I will have to change lenses to take some macro shots. I can wait for a deal on the new one and then take it.

    • @MiguelQuilesJr
      @MiguelQuilesJr  Рік тому +1

      The real differences have to be experienced. The AF is way more sticky and accurate on the newer bodies, and the lighter weight is really helpful. Colors also seem to look nicer on the JPEG shots of you shoot those. If I was in the market for a lens like this I'd say it's the best of what's available. 📸

    I have seen a few test/reviews of this new 70-200mm f4 G II lens, and in MTF-sharpest tests they do confirm that at 200mm f4 the new lens is not it's sharpest, a real bummer for some of what I shoot. Love the macro capability but I wont spend $1700 USD and have a 70-200mm lens not sharp at 200mm. Sony why couldn't you get this lens sharp at 200mm ? A deal-breaker for me with my A1 and A7RIV. Cheers

Also T&C Northrup also shot photos in their review, and also show it is NOT as sharp at 200mm as at 70mm. Do the research folks, know the facts. • @MiguelQuilesJr

      Good question. I think the f/2.8 GM2 goes beyond being better in just the sharpness and contrast department. The zoom in completely internal, optics are better, motors are crazy fast. In my estimation, it's the best 70-200mm lens that I've used full stop. With that said, the new f/4 lens is really nice at it's price point but I'm definitely not selling my G-master for it.

    At 200mm there really isn’t that much difference in DOF between. At 20 feet the DOF difference between the two is 3”. An f4 has a DOF of 0.75 feet while the f2.8 is 0.5 feet.

    • @MiguelQuilesJr
