Howdy All. FYI this episide is from 2010, yes only 9 years ago but a lot has changed. LED taillights did not become popular till later, at this time most new cars still used incandesent bulbs. The glass was the original glass from 1961 and glass from that era was not treated iirc.

Good piece on the El Camino. My brother got a 68 SS396 for high school graduation. 325 horse, 4-speed, 3.55 positraction. I was in charge of "preserving" it when he went off to basic training. Great car, especially after he replaced the Muncie shifter with a Hurst. He drag raced it one time. Turned 15.13 wheelhopping so badly it's a miracle the rear end stayed in the car. Only later did we find out that if you completely deflated the factory Delco air shocks the wheelhop disappeared.

At the end of the last episode with the mods to the trunk lid, I was sure that the plan was to adapt the '75/'76/'77 tail lamps (GM straightened out the trunk lid on these models).
Anyways, the bumper mods gave me an idea (kinda been thinking about it) for modifying the front and rear bumper mounts on my '84 coupe d'ville! Good work.

Appearenly some people who weren't born yet, don't know that the 1968 SS 396 El Cameno was easily out gunned by the 1968 Ford Ranchero R code 428 Cobra Jet. At that point the 396 was on its last leg. In fact when Chevrolet took the 1969 Chevelle SS 396 to Daytona, not a single Chevrolet finished the race on the lead lap, due to numerous oil problems that led to massive crank failures.
Chevrolet discontinued the 396 shortly there after, opting to create the 401 engine for the 1970 Chevelles ..while badging them as SS 396's.

Remember my parents had my brother and me in the back of a 68 396 sitting in kids lawn chairs. Try doing that today. He had a canvas type of truck cap on it. Man it was a cold ride sometimes. He ended up trading it in towards 2 Ford Pinto's. I think I can remember a tear in his eye seeing it at the Ford dealership for sale.

They never mentioned that Toughened or safety glass used in most vehicles for everything except the front windshield will often explode when polished. The glass is chemically and heat treated to be stronger but shatter into those tiny chunks that get everywhere. The glass he was polishing was either not treated or he was very lucky especially considering the frame he was working on only supported it in two places.

I don't know.. I like the big old fridge handles on my 74 V8.. And I'm sure the rear tail lights will look a lot better once the area has been dressed and all the bulbs are in. But... I mean, the lights on my old petrol drinker get hot enough to burn your skin, my newer BMW has plastic lamps, but the bulbs are a lot further away, and lower voltage. The four front lights are sealed beams, once they've been running a while, they will remove your prints in a heartbeat. I'm concerned the whole thing is going to melt..
Liked the glass polishing part, that was awesome!

You guys should do a full budget restoration and document the build. From tear down to rebuild, using a car anyone could get their hands on, like a g-body, f body, or even a classic import like a celica, rx7, supra. As much as i love American classics id love to see our Japanese cars receive some love too. Though the g-body is by far the cheapest car listed so far to get a hold of.
