  • My friend has almost finished building his Jimny prototype and he took me for a first test drive. I apologize for shaky video -- I used my cheap phone with no optical stabilizer. Anyway it was a lot of fun!

Ha ha funny bumpy ride, thank you for translation! Whats in and under the Jimny? 35 inch tires? 4:1 Transfercase maybe 6,5:1? Which axels and gears?

Thanx! Translating is always a challenge for me. ))
Unfortunately I don't remember all tech specs for this Jimny -- my buddy customized it to such extent that the only thing that relates this little truck to original Jimny -- is the body. Even the frame has had smth done to it. So I have a plan to make a video with my buddy explaining what mods he had done -- although I can't now say when will this happen. Hopefully, soon.

Very nice build there. How did your 3200km road trip in Pegasus go? I have two P38's, 1998 and 2000. Have to sell the 1998 as I just bought a 2008 RR SC similar to what you showed in one video. Thanks for all the interesting videos and for the sights in RUSSIA.

Thanks for watching! Congrats on your new ride!
Pegasus showed really good on that trip, I covered 2,500 km in 26 hrs non-stop -- all in all the trip was 5,000 km to Germany and back. On the way back one ignition wire had snapped, and she ran over 2,000 kms on 7 cylinders, still doing 150 on the interstate.

Thanks for the reply and link to the photos. Nice to see some of Europe and Google Translate did a decent job. When I bought my '98 last year one of the spark plug wires came off the coil pack and I immediately got a CEL so I'm surprised you did not with your broken wire. I have to say I think you are pretty brave to drive an old vehicle as fast as you were but I guess if you have a schedule to keep sometimes you have to take chances. Take care and I look forward to future P38 videos.

Yea, Europe is a nice place to visit.
Concerning CEL -- I guess the previous owner had done smth with it because the light never shows up even when it's already obvious that there's smth wrong with the engine. This truck was sold brand new in Moscow, first registration was Jan '99 -- back then the gas was nasty and Check Engine lighted up every now and then, so you had to go to a dealer to turn it off. Many people remapped ECU's so it would ignore many issues, or simply removed the bulb from the cluster. ))

If you turn the ignition switch to position 2 I think all the lights should come one. If you don't see the CEL light I guess the bulb is dead or gone. The CEL came on in my new purchase, the 2008 Supercharged, but when I put 94 octane in the tank it went away so I can see how these cars can be sensitive to the gas you use.

Yes, the light does show up along with all other lights when ignition is turned on, so I assume someone had fiddled whith coding so that the CEL won't bother if the fuel isn't good enough or whatever other reason.

They were made under the name Samurai in the States. Seems to be a very capable vehicle for a small displacement diesel engine.

I did not know they sold Jimny under the old name in the States! I remember Samurai as a older model -- the one with boxy body and round headlights. These were very popular where I grew up -- they were available in every rental shop for tourists.
The Jimny in the video has little in common with a bone stock Jimny: engine, transmission, axles, suspension -- all custom made. And it's not diesel -- it's gas 1.8 in-line 4 from the Japanese market Vitara. I apologize if my clumsy translation of our in-car blabbering was confusing.

Yes, Those are the vehicles! I may have misunderstood about the diesel as well, But many vehicles are available outside the U.S. with a diesel engine but they only sell the gas version here in the U.S. so i had no problem accepting it was a diesel....

Old diesels are slow, noisy and shaky -- these are good reasons for them not to be sold in the US. Actually, what my friend was saying in the video -- you don't want a diesel in a vehicle like this customized Jimny. Gas engine is as efficient but a lot more fun to drive! And weight reduction too -- diesels are quite heavy.
