It’s the airbag solution everyone’s been waiting for. Dainese debuts the Smart Jacket, a versatile airbag system that can be worn with any jacket. Drawing on Dainese's MotoGP experience, D-air airbag technology offers unobtrusive protection that could make all the difference in an impact situation. The Smart Jacket can be worn under or over any jacket, and it folds for easy storage if you want to stow it after a ride. Onboard electronics constantly monitor (1,000 times per second!) for a dangerous situation; protection lasts for 26 hours per charge.

I have one of these Smart Jacket/Vests and the one thing that Spurge did not get across is the incredible comfort this thing affords by getting rid of the hard back protector. Once you wear one of these you will take the hard back protection out of every motorcycle jacket that you own!

I crashed on Easter Sunday wearing smart Jacket which I bought on Revzilla. Car in front of me was cut off by another car they hit the brakes then I hit the brakes skidded into
the back of the car went over the handle bars landed on my back bounced off the trunk and hit the ground accident was about 25mph on my R6. I was wearing the smart jacket over a speed and strength shirt which has shoulder CE2 and Elbow CE2, Speed and strength jeans and gloves, Dainese booths & Scorpion helmet. The air bag jacket went off as soon as I felt myself rising up off the bike. I felt absolutely nothing on my body that was covered by the air bag vest. I got up and was like wtf Im ok. My hand, above my knee pad in the jeans and top of my foot was hurt but didn’t need to go to hospital. The vest is awesome it costs $300 to get repaired Dainese in NYC said they would give me a straight swap for new one if they have my size. I since bought Tech air 5 from Alpine. They are both worth getting and both have slightly different pros and not many cons. Always wear full gear and the airbag vests on the market all of them are individually very protective.

Where you wearing this vest on the outside or inside of your jacket when you had your accident? I am looking into these vests but have seen the alpine star street version going off randomly on people and worry if this happens you can lose control of your bike however this vest if there was ever a false deployment while riding seems that you would be able to control your bike say if you where in a corner since your arms would not be restricted..

@@BlazinSpeed I usually riding during the hot summer months and early fall and spring..thanks man glad you where saved with that vest .. I plan on getting it over the alpinestar for street use over my jacket or maybe under if I have about 2 inches will get it sized properly my only concern of wearing the smart jacket under my jacket is if there is a false positive and it goes off while riding or taking a turn which would cause you to possibly crash if it immobilizes your arms which it seems it should or would not. I really wanted to switch to this vest, but the chest and back protection, as excellent as it is here, isn't going to help me if I land on my head or hyper extend my neck. Since you have the same chest measurement as the model in the video (me!), you would want to go with the same size Large for the Smart Vest. As for your Avro 4 Jacket, if you have a bit of spare room inside of that jacket you should be just fine. We have found a good test is that if you can fit a light hoodie underneath your Avro 4, you should be OK. However, if your Avro 4 fits like a second layer of skin, you might need to go up to the 56. The literature says one needs 5 CM (about 2 inches) of room inside of a jacket to allow this room for expansion when energized. I was told that you could remove your back protector when you use this jacket/vest and that would give one enough expansion room. Does anyone have some knowledge of this here?

    • @RevZilla

Unless your jacket is very very tight-fitting, you should have enough room. Dainese does not recommend using this without a back protector. This enhances protection, so it's best to use it in conjunction with a back protector insert. -DrewZilla

    • @nathanielnolt3518
      @nathanielnolt3518 5 років тому

The problem with the Helite is how long it takes to inflate. I ran the numbers myself--it will not be even close to inflating before you hit an object even at low speeds. It will inflate before you hit the ground, though. So to me the Helite seems useful on the track, but on the street, I don't want an airbag throwing my head or neck around after I've already hit a car or stationary object. The vastly quicker inflation times of the Alpinestars system makes it useful on the street because it will actually inflate before you hit a car or object at the speeds of a typical street accident.

This occurs after the pin is pulled so we could perhaps add a couple of feet more....any airbag vest provides additional protection even if only partially inflated. The key is how fast it fills, the coverage area, and the deployment time. On the street coverage area is king as we may slide into a guard rail, vehicle tire, curbline, car hood etc....with that being said, any airbag system is great with body armor and it beats no airbag at all....

I think the algorithm's best quality over tethered is where it was born, on the track. In a large number of low-sides you can still be close enough to the bike that the tether doesn't trigger until after you've made contact with the ground (i.e 95% percent of Marquez's crashes ha). Small chance of it (you staying that close to the bike) happening but I think some could argue that has a higher probability of happening than an electronic malfunction in a algorithm based unit. Also, tethered units don't cover you if you are hit by a car until you get far enough from the bike to deploy it which might be after the vehicle hits your body (i.e hit by a car from behind). Some people just like the peace of mind of tether-less, so I see it as a win for both markets to be represented on the market. Great points though, keep 'em coming.

The mesh main body of the vest does allow air to flow through pretty easily over or under your jacket. I thought the same thing but the vibration they pair the light sequence with is like one from those old bomb-proof Nokia phones ha. When you start your bike or start moving, you can really feel it and don't need to see it. You could check in the mirror to see the light if you wanted reassurance, but man this thing was fun to see people try on and experience the vibration for the first time. Everyone's eyes would open pretty wide when they felt it.

PLEASE SOMEONE FROM REVZILLA CONFIRM OR DENIES THIS. Thanks.

    • @RevZilla

Since this is a very technical product, we asked Dainese to give us as specific an answer as they could:
The Dainese Smart Jacket is an intelligent system that can provide both “Reactive” and “Proactive” protection, without the use of tethers or any other external sensors. As a “Proactive” garment the Smart Jacket is able to detect a Non-Impact crash scenario, highside or lowside, (with or without tumbling), and deploy in order to protect the wearer.
“Proactive” protection does not require the system to detect any impact force on the motorcycle, or the rider. The “Smart Jacket”, using its multiple sensors and software, is able to anticipate the driver encountering a scenario the system recognizes as an impending “non-impact” crash and deploys the shield.
As a “Reactive” garment the Smart Jacket is able to react to an “Impact” crash scenario as well. This can be any of the following possible impact crash scenarios:
*Moving object striking a stationary rider
*Moving object striking a moving rider
*Moving rider striking a stationary object
*Moving rider striking a moving object
A “Reactive” crash scenario is an “Impact”, and is something that cannot be foreseen. The Smart Jacket is always anticipating a possible need for deployment, even in these unpredictable, and often violently fast impact crashes. Once the Brain of the Smart Jacket senses an initial impact, “FIRST IMPACT”, that requires a response, the system will jump into action and deploy the Shield. The system does not deploy prior to “First Impact”.
First Impact is the initial point at which energy is being transferred from 1 object to another.
      Examples:
*The front bumper of a car hitting the rear tire of a stopped motorcycle
*The front tire or the motorcycle hitting the rear bumper of a car
The brain of Smart Jacket can react incredibly fast to impact crashes, however it cannot predict an impending impact crash. Once the “First Impact” has occurred they system will deploy the Shield and start protecting prior to the “Second Impact”. The “Second Impact” is typically the one in which the wearer will begin transferring energy to other objects.
Automobile Air Bags work in the same manner, the systems do not deploy before “First Impact”. The car you are driving in hits another object “First Impact”, the Airbag deploys prior to you hitting the dashboard “Second Impact”, protection achieved.
All Impact detection systems are reactive, not proactive. These systems cannot predict something that is unpredictable, but they can react incredibly quickly to address the event.
Although this explanation is incredibly long, the time frame from the point the system detects the “First Impact” and deploys to protect for the “Second Impact” is MILLISECONDS!!! These are fractions of a second in which you are not even able to blink your eye. The technology at work here is tried and true. Airbags systems have been in cars for years. Dainese has just compressed the technology into a wearable garment and refined it for personal protection with Dainese patented technology.
