Tribute to Pop Up Headlights: (Part 1 of 2)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 січ 2015
- This has got to be my most ambitious project yet! This is a tribute to a feature on cars we all love: popup headlights. You'll see Vector supercars, a Cizeta V16t, all Ferraris and Lamborghinis, Toyota 2000GT, TVRs, a Cord 810 Plymouth Superbird, BMW M1, - just about any car you can think of that has popup or hidden headlamps! This is NOT a slide show, it is a collection of video clips and they are NOT taken from Google, they are all taken by me unless otherwise noted.

Absolute legend! Thanks so much for doing this
What car is on 12:38?
@@slavenleko The silver car is a Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, and the black car after it is a Toyota MR2.
@@DtRockstar1 thank you 😁

So many of our subs are the same
Is it only me..
or it's really like a beasts waking up and opening their eyes?
Yes, exactly ! On another DtRockstart video, you have the "shark" car, also with pop-up headlights, and the "nose" of that beauty is clearly like a shark one, with the blue-grey color ! Amazing videos
9:26 Holy crap, the headlights slide in place.
My dad has that car lol
@@masoncrowell4860 What car is it?
@@mitza3613 66-70 Buick Riviera
@@mitza3613 bruh it says it on the front plate... still i understand the confusion, dont always know where to look.
@@carlwheezerofsouls3273 well they are more polite about it than you are
4:06 C4 Corvette 180 degree upside-down flip remains the absolute coolest! Very elegant way to keep a fairly aerodynamic profile and avoid the airbrake effect of the excess wind-catching metal in the other designs.
lol i own a c4 vette
@@koledriver9988 Me and my dad bought an 84' c4 about a month ago, it's the best part of the whole car.
Some of these cars I honestly didnt even know the lights on them popped up
Me too.. I didn't know the GTO (Pontiac) Had pop up head lights
same
They look so freaking cute when their lights go up *^* we need more cars like this #savethepopups
Where's James when you need him?? POP UP UP AND DOWN HEADLIGHTS!
Music sounds like it came from Need For Speed 3. Very nostalgic and fits this video. Love it.
AE86 Trueno?
there was one close to the end, i was watching for it too
what time Pls!
I was waiting for it to show up the whole way through the video lol
the car at 12:19 is a Nissan by the way
(the grey one)
You've missed some non-exotic cars... Isuzu Piazza, Subaru XT, Honda Prelude, Honda CRX, Eunos 100, Aston Martin Lagonda, Acura Integra, Toyota Celica, Mazda Cosmo Series HB, Toyota Trueno AE86, Geo Storm. Impressive project though!
+モーターチャンネル I Don't think the CRX had popup headlights.
+U3erpru7ser ohh. hmm maybe not in North America? anyways in Japan and Europe they did.. cdn.snsimg.carview.co.jp/minkara/photo/000/004/018/335/4018335/p4.jpg?ct=2cd4bd6657f0
Subaru xt oh yes one of the coolest cars ever
Piazza, XT, Eunos, Lagonda, Cosmo... Not exotic, you say?
モーターチャンネル, I swear I saw an AE86 tho
THE JALPA WINKED AT ME!!!
haha thats a really cool video
I miss the pop up Headlights, turn on the headlight is like car is waking up, however Pop up headlights produce a lot of Drag at speeds.
Shouldnt been speeding during the night and who drives with headlights during the day ✌
The drag would be so minimal it might reduce top speed by 2, maybe 3 mph. Going within that amount of any cars top speed in the dark would be a bad idea.
@@christianhaslob9490 go away normie
Yeah they re super dangerous, i love em but they have killed a lot
@@ramonbustillo3249 How?
I drive a Fiat X1/9 and I still get giddy with excitement when I see the pop ups rise. It's a sense of occasion that only us will appreciate.
Cheers for making this. There are some truly amazing styles.
Best kind of headlights ever made. That's why I bought my first gen saturn sc2 had the pop ups!
Right? My very first car was a 1984 Nissan 300ZX with Pop Up Up and Down Headlights!
Awww, no saturn =( I loved the pop up headlights on my old saturn. Too much fun to play with

The Testarossa is the most beautiful Ferrari ever made!!!! Those popup headlights are by far the prettiest of them all !!!
5:02 the Ferrari 512M didn't have pop-up lights,
great video, too bad that you didnt get a Lancia stratos
I couldn't put my finger on the "error" with this one. Thanks!
Awesome video! I love how the Corvette C4 does it. It ends up looking really smooth, without sharp edges. Those 80s Ferraris and the 928 are also sweet to watch.
I did not expect to see some love for the 4th gen Trans Am, I love the pop ups on mine even thought they clank around like tin cans. Pop up lights are the most unique and cool lights I've ever seen.
The Opel GTs are cool they flip out and those slide out ones on the Vector W8 are awesome
headlights go up headlights go down headlights go up headlights go down

Headlights go up, pants go down.
Nick Gregory on modern cars: headlights stay up, headlights stay up. (Unless it has an aftermarket kit that adds popups, that is).
@@HyperVanilo Yup, like Homer Bedlow cantankerously pumping the drive-handle as he powers the clunky handcar from Hooterville to Pixley :D
Great compilation Chris. Glad you put it together.
Most cars that have them usually have front clips that are "aero" and slope downward from your eyepoint behind the wheel. I knew this from my original Miata, and my C5 Corvette later on.
Best feature about them to me is that when you quickly raise them as you pull into a parking spot, you have a bit more visual confirmation of where the end of your car is, so that they reduce the likelihood you will hit something with your bumper.
In addition, protecting the lenses from rocks or UV fade in the case of plastic ones that are sadly the norm these days, is a huge plus in my book.
Mostly, they look clean which sports car people rather like.
YMMV.
My 2003 Corvette was having a problem with one of the headlights making a grinding noise on the way down. Watched some UA-cam videos and learned how to repair the gear drive. Got it done. No more grinding noise. UA-cam suggested your video based on the videos I watched about my Corvette's headlights. I enjoyed your video more than I thought I would. 8-)
Thank you very much!
Great, great, great video!!! I love pop-ups and i don't think they get the appreciation they should. Since i saw you mention maybe a part 2.... Mazda RX7 FC, First Gen Integra 86-89 (i can help with this) 3rd gen Accord, 2nd and 3rd Gen Prelude. Honda was right into the pop-ups in the 80's. Thanks again for making this!
I was looking for my 3geez also buddy. I drive a 87 Accord hatch
I've got an 89 Accord LXi with working popups
An they go up and they go down, up-down, up-down, up-down. Mr.Regular would be proud.
The synthwave music, the bad video quality, the beasts opening up their eyes.... it's just, glorious.
They look like crocodiles opening their eyes... so awesome. When did this stop being sexy for cars? Car nowadays seriously need to implement this again, its so awesome, its like seeing the car open their eyes and awakening every time you start them...
+john hamlet The stopped producing car with pop up headlights 'cause they were dangerous for pedestrians.
2:09 - I luv this Porsche style! :3
MAHABO Productions Lamborghini did that with the miura.
Yay! I watched the whole video hoping to see an Opel GT 😂 I was about to lose hope when it showed up around 11:30
Countauch will forever be a legend
My first car that I bought in high school, 88 Nissan Pulsar. Pop up lights and T-tops. I felt that I ruled the world :) Fun video. Thanks for putting it together.
wheres the toyota celica?
TheK24Kyle I loved my dad's celica. Sucks that it wasn't included. Watched the whole video looking for a celica.
I also watched the whole video looking for the Celicas as well. Very sad they weren't included for whatever reason (as a proud Celica owner and enthusiast) :(
HamMan1997The2nd heyy im planning to buy the celica as my first car! do you think its reliable and is it recommendable for someone who just started driving??
Nissan , mazda, Mitsubishi
LOL I was thinking the same thing. As a kid I was obsessed with popup headlights. I always wanted them on my first car, which ended up being a 1986 Toyota Celica and I was so happy!
This is one amazing compilation. Thanks for the hard work putting this together!
Great video, must have taken quite awhile to do. 67-70 Merc Cougars to add to list, a real joy to have working flipping lights and a a expensive problem to fix when they are not, what a joy to work on then.
My favorite has always been the Corvette C4. That 180 flip is so damn cool.
88-91 Honda Prelude? How bout the AE86? Celica? Early Accord? other than that nice vid man.
Love da "double decker" headlights at 3:42 and 10:22, and the "somersaulting" lamps at 9:28 :D
WHAT ABOUT AT 0:23?.
I love the 90s music in this by the way - sounds like it could be in one of the old Need for Speed games - and that is a top-class thing to be!
The Dodge Stealth is such an underrated but badass car I love it.
Ferrari F40 for me please, without the popup headlights ;) Nice vid!
You're not the only one...
Gumbal
Bruh Pop Up Up and Down Headlights! For Life.
Yea, the F40 looks better with them down!
Great video, with some very cool versions of the pop up lights (Alfa Montreal and Opel GT and other ones i've never seen working before). Ive owned over 230 cars with pop up lights, but 225 of them were MR2s! Another one I didn't see is the Panther Solo, which had swivelling headlights. But there were only about 20 were built.
Thanks Neil! It's funny you mentioned the Panther Solo, that was on my list of cars to find. But as you mentioned, they are nearly impossible to find. I'm working on a Volume 2 of this video, and I have slight hope of finding one. And....225 MR2s??? That's one hell of an enthusiast right there! lol I always loved the Japanese sports cars from the early 90s, like the Dodge Stealth, Misubishi 3000GT, Nissan 300ZX, and the Toyota MR2.
I restore and break Mk1 MR2s for a living now. Ive owned well over 200 of them. Some get broken for parts for the others. Ive also had (pop up lights wise...) 4x Mk2 MR2s, a 1989 Toyota Celica, 2x Ferrari 308GTB and still own a Ferrari 328GTS.
The Vector W8 gets my vote! Nice vid, thanks for posting.
Love pop up headlights, had 6 cars with them, a C4 Corvette & 5 TVRs..including current 420 SEAC.
Great video, thanks for sharing!

Missing the Saab Sonett III. 9,000 made. No excuse. ;-)
4:06 the corvette flip-around headlights are the best
Aunt and Uncle had a '68 Chevy Caprice with 2 piece hide away headlights. Would play with those when I was young. Loved to watch them open and close.
*6:16* i love looking at Bricklins! :)
I miss that feature man...thanks for the tribute
Pop-up cars are my favorites. The Pontiac Firebird and Fiero are my favorite cars. I wish 2021 would bring them back.
My old '94 Saturn SC2 had popup headlights. It took me until now to appreciate them...
Still have my 96 SC2 and plan to restore it!
Subscribed because you are a passionate.
Thank you very much! I appreciate the support my friend!
I'll second that. How can I resist such a true enthusiast?!
Ah love the good ol days
Dude, I admire your admiration of pop up headlights, this is awewome
Thanks for the compilation! I've had 4 cars with hidden or pop up headlights. A '68 Charger, an '88 Firebird, an '86 Porsche 944 and an '82 Porsche 928 (which I still have).
When I learn to drive a car I am destined to have one of these
No first gen mazda 323F :P
+FIN94make IKR!? Also missing celicas...
Actually, it was not sold in the US. Only the 3 door hatch and 4 door sedan versions, and called "Protégé". But these had no pop up lights.
Make451 *insert thank you gif here*
That car shared the same motors for its pop ups as in the rx7 !
It's 2am and I'm watching a tribute to pop-up headlights...I couldn't be happier! I love the C4 corvette and how its lights flip all the way around too.
lol i owna c4 vette
Great video I used to have a 1985 MR2. It's sad that pop up headlights went out of style. They really transform the look of the car especially the exotics. I feel the supercars of the 70's, 80's, and 90's are way more fun to look at then the ones being made today.
Mazda 323F, Honda Civic, Nissan EXA, Volvo 480, Honda Accord, Honda Prelude, Nissan S12, Aston Martin Lagonda, Isuzu Piazza, Alpine A610.... all i could think of that you missed. Not rare as some cars in your video. Dont think I am some kond of hater, I love this video, keep up the good work.
You left off the late 60's impala SS
Good call! 1968 Impala SS was available with optional hidden headlamps.
Seeing all these cars open up headlights is satisfying
I've also always liked pop-up headlights. Must be because of the cars being more aerodynamic and therefore looking faster. When I was a little kid I remember seing a (kind of slow) Mazda with popup headlights, and I said; "Hey dad, look. A racecar!"
Long live flippy headlights.......oh wait......dammit. :(
8:05 and 9:01 hell yeah! :D
Awesonymous RC Totally agree. I wanted to see more 180s (my favourite) in this video, but still other nice cars are shown btw.
65 Buick Riviera. Coolest headlights ever put on an automobile!
Cars with this feature will always be the best
POP UP UP AND DOWN HEADLIGHTS?
TOYOTA CELICA GT AND GTS 1983 TO 86 .........
i came here to find this... and luckily i checked the comments.
***** excuse me?
yep i was disappointed,
i own a st162 celica and its not ere...
One of the coolest features of the C4 Corvette is the flip up headlights. I love playing with them on my 90 and enjoyed them on my 84. Awesome vid!
i own one too
DtRockstar1 i truly thank you for your videos, here in spain is so difficult to spot rare cars and you showed me a lot of cars i didnt know about. i know how making videos is and the tone of hours spent to get a few minutes of content, this piece deserves +500K views at least and the fact that you seem a really cool guy and a true enthusiast got my respect.(sorry for my english)
Thank you very much for the kind comments, my friend! One of my goals on this channel is to introduce people to cars they may not be familiar with, as well as help them remember the classics. There's TONS of videos of Lamborghini Aventadors and Ferrari 458s. Those are very cool cars, but I like to see more rare cars as well. And your English is very good! ;)

POP UP UP AND DOWN HEADLIGHTS
Lamborghini Countach, probably my most favorite car of the '80s.
i was waiting for the 1990 mr2 and sure enough right at the end Great Vid!
The music made me feel I was playing project IGI
Aawww no 85-89 Honda accord or 80s Integra
2:24 - Lamborghini Diablo SV (my 3rd favourite car (after the Diablo SE30 Jota and SE30)) and probably the best-integrated pop-up headlights in a car design ever made - so sleek - not too high and with those solid metal lashes extruded out over the top. Lamborghini were at the top of their game at this time.
Commendable job. People forget how many models had hideaway headlights. Mercury Cougar; DeTomaso Mangusta and Saab Sonett are a trio I didn't see? Thumbs up to you and keep up the good work.
no toyota ae86 trueno or even the US version 1986 toyota corolla gts ?
+Blader ZYeYO 12:20
Nevermind that's a Silvia S12 :(
No generation 3 Honda Accords either, which were arguably much better performing
may have missed it but was there a 2nd gen rx7 fc3s?
No
:'(
I hope someday you'll find every set of pop-ups, thanks for the awesome tribute!
What a great video - I've always liked popup/hidden headlights -- I liked the old American Iron you have in there - from the all the great Vettes, the Lincoln, Thunderbird, Camaro, Toranado, a Charger -- even a Cord!! You need a 69-74 Imperial in there for good measure !!
Where's the Honda Accord, Honda Prelude, and Toyota Celica?
with eclipse and co.
+george eglington -- but they included numerous Ford Probes...
i didnt think it was weird that you liked those lights so much...im in the market to buy a corvette and even tho the c6 corvettes are much better than the c5...Im simply unable to decide just because of the c5s pop up headlights
Great video! I used to have an Orciari headlight/grill setup on my MK2 VW GTI, functions just like the lights at the 9:30 mark
2:28 seeing my cars original ride height scares me LOL looks like a monster truck! Love this video though. Nothing like the sound of the pop-up headlights before you start your drive. Always puts a grin on my face haha
lol Is that how it came from the factory? I never really noticed the height, but I can see it now! Thank you for contributing to this video by the way, I remember that day very well!
Subaru XT?
how did you forget the ae86???
