- Audrey Hepburn (Audrey Kathleen Huston) was born in Belgium in 1929.
Her artistic talent is revealed as a child. Hepburn participated for the first time in ballet by the age of 5.
In the years 1939-1945 the attended the Conservatory of Arnhem in Holland, where she trained in ballet. At the end of the Second World War she moved with her mother to Amsterdam where where Hepburn took ballet lessons for three years with Sonia Gaskell, arguably the leading figure in Dutch ballet.
In 1948 she appeared for the first time on film Dutch in Seven Lessons.
In that same year she moved to London to study ballet at the Ballet Rambert.
All foreshadowed that in the future art of Audrey Hepburn would have been the ballet and instead to due of her height and thinness her destiny changed.
The acting would become his work, which would give her in a few years an immense popularity and success. Marie Rembart, dance teacher of Hepburn after Audrey became a star, said of her: "She was a wonderful learner. If she had wanted to persevere, she might have become an outstanding ballerina.
The first starring role was in the Italian set in William Wyler's Roman Holiday with Gregory Peck. In the film she played the role of a princess who escaped the strict real-life falls in love with an American newsman. Initially, the producers opted for Elizabeth Taylor, but the director Wyler was so impressed by Hepburn's screen test that he cast her in the lead. She won the Academy Award for Best Actress, the BAFTA Award for Best British Actress in a Leading Role and a Golden Globe Award for Best actress-Motion Picture Drama.
From this moment for Audrey Hepburn open the doors of Hollywood.
Hepburn was signed to a seven-picture contract with Paramount with twelve months in between films to allow her time for stage work[38] while spawning what became known as the Audrey Hepburn "look" after her illustration was placed on the September 1953 cover of TIME magazine.
Later, she starred in romantic Cinderella-story comedy Sabrina by Billy Wilder starring Humphrey Bogart and William Holden. For her performance, she was nominated for the 1954 Academy Award for Best Actress while winning the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role the same year.
Become one of the most important movie star, Hepburn attended to other famous movie: War and Peace on the novel by Tolstoy with Henry Fonda and her husband Mel Ferrer.
In 1957, she made her debut in a movie musical Funny Face with Fred Astaire where she shows her skills as a dancer. In the same year she starred opposite Gary Cooper in the romantic comedy Love in the Afternoon.
Gets the third nomination for her role as Sister Luke in The Nun's Story directed by Fred Zinemann.
In the 1960s Blake Edwards wants her in his Breakfast at Tiffany's based on the novel by Truman Capote. The role of Hepburn has been revised after Capote had thought that Marilyn Monroe had been more suitable. She got the fourth nomination and her role became an icon of American cinema. The film was a great success thanks also to the magnificent soundtrack Moonriver by Henry Mancini.
Fifth and final nomination as Best actress for the thriller Wait Until Dark.
Other unforgettable performances are: My Fair Lady, How to Steal a Million Dollars and Live Happily, Two for the Road.
But the life of Audrey Hepburn was not only characterized from her passion for acting.
In the 1980s stands out for its remarkable humanitarian efforts on behalf of UNICEF.
In 1988 she participated in her first mission by making a trip to Ethiopia and later in Turkey, Venezuela and Ecuador. In 1989 other missions in Central America, Sudan, Bangladesh. Her last commitments in Vietnam and Somalia.
She died in Switzerland in January 1993.
For her humanitarian efforts in 1993, two months after her death received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award from the Academy. The son Sean, received the Award.
