Oh Dixie. I’m so, so sorry to hear about Hank. He always cracked me up when he made his cameos behind you in your vids. What a great buddy he was to you. ❤️. And please, never worry about taking time for yourself whenever you need to. You ARE allowed to have a life beyond social media, you know. 😉. We all appreciate you more than you know. Take care and ‘we’ll see you next time.’ 👍

Sorry Dixi- I get it. Just lost my dog last year. It’s tough. Dogs give you nothing but love and expect so little in return. That kind of love is hard to find and is a devastating to lose.

All of my heart to you, Dixie. I've lost two in the past 3 years; losing a fur baby is losing a member of your family - it's a sadness that sticks in your core. I started tearing up the moment you said he had to go to the emergency room. I hope that you can find peace and know that a stranger on the internet feels a tiny bit of your loss.

Dixie I'm nearly your age and just recently lost my 15 year old dog. They're all special but them being there for you during your turbulent and exciting times from your late teens and early 20s and through the years of finding yourself, always being there and loving you, being a consistent and predictable unconditional companion makes the bond so much more special.
I completely understand and my heart goes out to you.
It's good to cry. It's how we say goodbye. Remember the good times when you do and you'll always carry a part of him with you. 💜
P.S. thank you for the videos. I was just watching your kitten Camino clip. It's nice to think that little guy is starting a happy life of his own. Always nice to see how life goes on and it's worth living while you have it.
P.S.S. hope you and your family stay safe

Laying on the sofa watching your video with two dogs piled on me. I know your love of Hank and am so sorry for you.
My wife and I were in Harper’s Ferry two weeks ago when our oldest dog fell ill. We thought she was having a stroke. I spent the night with her laying in the floor, thinking it could be her last (she is 14). We hustled home and she was diagnosed with vestibular disease. She is slowly recovering and we have her a while longer. She’s really getting the treatment now! They are not just pets; they are family.
We will follow you wherever you hike. Enjoy and we pray for some normalcy next year.

So sorry for your loss, Dixie. A trail suggestion I have for you is the Superior Hiking trail along the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. Most thru hikers can do it all in three weeks. I have hiked a few sections of it and it is absolutely stunning with breathtaking views of the lake. If you hit it in mid to late September, the fall colors are incredible too. Happy trails and thank you for all of the inspiration!

Our daughter just turned 20, and her dog she's had for 13yrs is experiencing health issues. As an only child, he has been her sibling, playmate, confidant, and the first boy to steal her heart. He was her first real responsibility in life. They've grown up together.

Dogs are much more than mere pets. They are wondrous creatures who love selflessly and return much more love to us than any human could possibly deserve. Their deaths remind us of how precious they are, yet their gifts endure: the memories of my beloved pups, now departed, still draw smiles from me, and every now then I’ll spot a mannerism or movement in another dog that evokes their memories and I have a sense that they are with me still. When your grief passes, I hope he brings you such smiles, too.

    THE RAINBOW BRIDGE POEM
“Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….”
    - Author unknown

@Spekulatius I don't understand what you mean by getting checked? @Spekulatius I believe there is a period where you can have the disease and still test negative meaning you'd need to test negative after 14 days quarantine. Not many visitors would want to spend their first 2 weeks here in quarantine. We also have enough trouble isolating all the returning Kiwis. It's cost something half a billion dollars already.
Having said that, if you're making a big budget movie they'll let you in 😝

Spekulatius The NZ government took the coronavirus epidemic seriously. The last community transmission was months ago.
As you might now appreciate, a quick check at the airport followed by a roam around the countryside isn’t going to happen.

@@JCo295 are you serious about the government took this serious? Because the season and NZ geographically isolation it was very easy for NZ to control the virus. NZ could of adopted a Swedish model and still achieved less than 30 deaths. Although I still think 2 weeks isolation apon arrival isn't long enough. 3-4 weeks with antibody testing by two methods and PCR quant at week 0, the PCR only 2,3 and depending on the result week 3.

@@mramazingtroy Bollocks. The Swedish model is a disaster when you compare it to their neighboring countries. Herd immunity without a vaccine is a myth.
Also - other countries besides New Zealand have crushed the pandemic; South Korea, Germany, Taiwan, etc. The United States' poor leadership and lack of a realistic response has been a complete failure. I applaud Dixie's ambition, but if life returns to any type of 'normal' by this time NEXT year, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

I'm dealing with the looming loss of our family cat Casey even as I write this. She has been a part of my family for 18 years and has seen my children grow up and leave the nest. Like your dog , Casey has been my constant companion. Her passing will leave a huge hole in my heart & life. After she passes, I think I will take your advice and go find a good section of trail through the woods to wander and reminisce. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and strength.

I am so sorry for your loss, Jessica! Thank you for sharing the depth of your feelings for Hank. I know what you mean about how losing him feels like losing a child. We had my boy for more than 15 years. Although it’s already been over a year since we said goodbye, I am still having a very hard time dealing with his death.
It’s rare to find others who can relate to such intense feelings about an animal. Knowing that there are others like you, who feel the same way about their pets, makes me feel a little less lonely in my loss. While talking about Hank must’ve been extremely difficult for you, I am glad that you had the courage to share your feelings with us.

So sorry about your pup. A wise man once said, "I don't know if dogs go to heaven when they die. But, if they don't, when I die I want to go wherever they go". Love you, Dixie. Hang in there, and take as much time as you need. We'll still be here for you.

I'm so sorry for your loss Dixie. When my 15 years old cat passed away I thought I could never bare this amount of pain. But I took a kitten and the necessity to take care of this little creature really helped me to get through. He became my new soulmate and I really love him. Although it still huts sometimes when I think about my loss the time heals and it is getting better.

Dixie, I know you have roots in Florida, but I really wish you would reconsider and not do the Florida trail. Mountain lions and grizzly bears are one thing, but the two-legged, transient predators in the woods of Florida are completely different.
At the very least, travel in a group and arm yourselves.

Dixie I'm very sorry for your loss. I also treat my fur puppy as family.
As others have mentioned the Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail in SW Pennsylvania is 70 miles of awesome wilderness. I have been training my lungs and legs for about 2 years now in anticipation of thru hiking this trail. I've section hiked most of it several times since I was a kid. Now at 50 i'm ready. I was researching my backpacking plans and came across your site and videos a few months ago and you inspired me so much. You helped me realize that I don't have to be in perfect shape or able to trek 30 miles a day and I don't have to own all the newest equipment. So, Thank you very much for the help that you unknowingly gave me. You also made me feel less crazy about wanting to thru hike solo (I thought I was the only one).
I am starting my NOBO thru hike of the LHHT in mid September 2020 and have the itinerary set and paid. It would be an honor if you would choose to join me.
